The Department of Theatre and Dance is ready for a great semester! Take a look at our Spring 2016 productions!

The 2016-17 Walter Gloor Mainstage Season Announced!

The Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased and excited to announce its 2016-17 Walter Gloor Mainstage Season! It will be a Gala Year celebrating the opening of the Rockefeller Arts Center addition.

Special Event: Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company in Residence August 22-September 9, 2016 (tentative; details pending) Paul Taylor 2 will be in residence for three weeks, with community events, classes for students, children and community members, showings of their work, and they will set a piece on Fredonia Dance Ensemble members for their April 2017 concert.

Godspell - musical by Stephen Schwartz, book by John-Michael Tebelak, based on the Gospel of St. Matthew. Bartlett Theatre, Oct. 21-23, 27-29, 2016. Directed by Paul Mockovak - One of the most-beloved and most produced musicals of all time, this is the show that will be on the boards for the formal Opening Ribbon-Cutting Celebration of the RAC Addition on the weekend of Oct. 21-23. This is also Alumni Weekend, and we hope to be able to run some special TADA events for alumni in the hope to bring them up to campus this weekend and show off the new addition. This show will be running concurrent with the Hillman Opera, which will be in the Marvel Theatre.

The Man Who Came To Dinner - play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. Marvel Theatre, December 1-4, 2016 (six performances over 4 days). Directed by James Ivey, featuring Tom Loughlin as Sheridan Whiteside.Dr. This holiday classic features a large and diverse cast of over 25 actors, a large unit set, a boy's choir, and penguins! The original Broadway show featured Monte Woolley as Sheridan Whiteside, and Edith Atwater as Maggie Cutler. The 1942 movie saw Woolley repeat his performance as Whiteside, with Bette Davis taking the role of Maggie. The show will be performed 6 times over 4 days, with matinees and evenings on Saturday and Sunday of the run.

The Illusion - play by Tony Kushner, adapted from the 17th-century play L'Illusion Comique by Pierre Corneille. Bartlett Theatre, Feb. 24-26, March 2-4, 2017. Directed by Jessica Hillman-McCord - The play is an indulgent feast of language, as only Tony Kushner can deliver. The story is of a father who seeks out a sorceress to help him find out what has become of his missing son. The sorceress presents him three different possibilities throughout the course of the play. Kushner creates a wonderfully theatrical world around the words, which should provide enticing for all audiences.

Seussical - musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, based on the books of Dr. Seuss. Marvel Theatre, March 31-April 2, April 6-8, 2017. Directed by Guest Director Jennifer Cody '91. Musical Direction by Dr. Robert Deemer, School of Music - This is our annual major musical, and we are completely proud and thrilled to welcome Jennifer Cody as the Guest Director for this show. Jennifer was an original cast member of Seussical when it first opened on Broadway on Nov. 30, 2000, and she brings a wealth of Broadway experience to this production. Jennifer will be resident on campus for five weeks as she directs and choreographs the show, and she will be offering both regular and master classes to students during those five weeks. We hope that this will also serve as a "family friendly" musical, bringing families into the theatre to enjoy the wacky world of Dr. Seuss.

The Fredonia Dance Ensemble - Helen Myers, Artistic Director, and various choreographers. Marvel Theatre, April 27-30, 2017 - Along with the piece set by the Taylor 2 company, the FDE will once again in its 11th year bring a variety of dance styles to the Marvel Theatre. Whatever they have up their sleeves, you can be sure it will be quite interesting.

Meet Amy Gruttadauria, Assistant Stage Manager on Six Characters in Search of an Author, a BA Theatre Major, and hoping to minor in Stage Management. This Friday Nov. 6, Six Character in Search of an Author opens in the Bartlett Theatre. This production features an immersive theatre experience, as audiences will feel themselves right in the middle of the theatrical action. The plot of the play involves a company of theatre people who are in the midst of rehearsing a play, when six people enter the theatre, claiming to be characters from another play who need an author to complete and fulfill them. Luigi Pirandello was a playwright who pushed the bounds of illusion and reality, and this production will continue that tradition by the use of TV monitors to emphasize that difference. The set, with its unfinished look designed to indicate the fact that the play being rehearsed is not ready to open, was designed by Sammantha Nickel, and features over 100 window frames covering the entire upper level wall of the Bartlett. Meet Ilana Lieberman, a Junior Acting and Dance Double Major who is currently Directing and Choreographing The Yellow Wallpaper- A Movement Adaptation which is being performed November 6th at 4:30pm, 7th at 5:00pm and 8th at 7:30pm. The annual Scholar’s Breakfast was held Saturday morning, October 31, in Steele Hall. Every October, scholarship donors and recipients come together in recognition of the students’ achievements and the generosity of donors. TADA is fortunately to have so many scholarships available and so many talented and smart students who earn them. We congratulate all the recipients, and look forward to April when we will have our Awards ceremony and recognize this year’s coming scholarship recipients.

Coming up next in Theatre and Dance is the absurdist classic Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirendello. The play is about a theatre company rehearsing a play, when six character enter the theatre, looking for an author to tell their story. The TADA production mixes 21st century production values with Pirendello’s original 1940s characters. The Bartlett Theatre actually becomes an fully immersed “theatre in rehearsal,” a signature concept of director Dr. James Ivey’s artistic style (recall last year’s Balm in Gilead).
