Last week we held our first Volunteer Captain Training... Besides the regular Free Arts Days, Weekly Mentor and Parents and Children Together with Art (PACT) programs, Free Arts volunteers also participate in a number of special events throughout the year. Volunteers are crucial to the success of these projects, and Free Arts strives to guarantee each volunteer feels ready and prepared to complete their responsibilities. As the number of these fundraising and community partnerships continue to grow, it's becoming harder for staff to attend each event. As such, it has become crucial to have leaders-Volunteer Captains- to serve as other volunteers' first contact, provide support within the team, and troubleshoot any problems that may arise. Our inaugural team of Volunteer Captains will be providing leadership and support to volunteer teams at Free Arts fundraising and community partnership events. We're thrilled to have Felicia, Jade, Magdalena, Melissa, and Nell on board for this new initiative.

Case Study - DH - Age 9 - Male - African American
Upon starting the Weekly Mentorship Program, DH was extremely timid in his interactions with the group as well as with the projects. Although he clearly showed an interest in working with the mentors and the materials, he required excessive prompting from the mentors to begin them. Likewise, he often avoided sharing or talking in front of the whole group.
Throughout the year DH has come out of his shell and has gradually become very engaged with both the art projects and the other students in the group. This was also evident in his enthusiasm for writing in his journal. As he developed this new confidence, the mentors have noticed DH jumping right into the projects each week. DH himself has frequently commented on how much he enjoys Free Arts when arriving and leaving from the WMP. Moreover, he was among a small group of students who vocalized a wish to have âFree Arts sleepoversâ, demonstrating his comfort with the whole group.
Over the course of the past year, DH has developed from a student too shy to speak in front of his peers to one who is enthusiastic enough to ask for a sleepover with everyone. DHâs Facilitator believes that his experience in WMP will give him the confidence to pursue other creative activities.Â

Case Study- PACT Program - 2011/2012
PARENT/GUARDIAN: Ralph & Laura
CHILDREN: Juan, Carla
New or Returning: NEW
As new PACT participants, this family benefited tremendously from the program. They entered the group with a generally positive attitude, happy to engage in the arts but had some resistance about working together. As the most vocal member of the family, Ralph would initiate most of the project ideas, take the lead, delegate tasks and explain the project during the sharing circle. Other family members would always contribute but often doubted their suggestions or art work and rarely spoke on behalf of the family. As the cycle progressed, more challenges presented themselves, and the family was able to grow and adapt. Individual family members, especially the children, appeared more comfortable expressing their opinions even if they differed from the others. This family found ways of making sure everyoneâs interests were represented, even if the end product wasn't âperfect.â
The familyâs confidence and self-esteem was another area of growth. When the youngest son became frustrated, the parents developed ways of encouraging him instead of telling him to âget over itâ or doing the project for him as they tended to do in earlier sessions. This didn't always result in success but demonstrated the familyâs understanding of positive team dynamics and collaboration.
AndrĂ© Saraiva aka Monsieur AndrĂ© aka Monsieur A, born AndrĂ© Saraiva is a Portuguese graffiti artist. He paints a distinctive stick-figure character, usually with a top hat and an âXâ in place of one of the eyes. He started doing graffiti in 1985. He is part of the early Parisian graffiti scene, and appeared in Banksy street art movie, Exit Through the Gift Shop. His distinctive style, poetic and joyful, and his use of pink color, made him quickly stand out.
He is currently the Creative Director of LâOfficiel Homme and has exhibited at art galleries in Paris (Collette) and NYC (Half Gallery, Hole Gallery).

Case Study - âAaronâ - Age11 - Male - African-American
A quiet and reserved boy, Aaron arrived without the belief that he could create art that matched his vision. Although he was extremely focused and passionate about his art making, he often became discouraged and asked the mentors for help instead of adapting to the things that did not match his vision. This frustration became exacerbated whenever the mentors were busy assisting other students. It became clear that Aaron did not believe or trust in his own creative abilities to complete the projects to his liking.
As Aaron continued with Free Arts and experienced more and more opportunities to complete his own projects, he became much more confident in his own creative abilities. Instead of asking a mentor to do something for him, he learned to seek out his own materials and ask different mentors and students about their method of crafting. He is a lot less easily frustrated, which has stemmed from both his own determination to complete projects and having developed patience when asking for help. The weekly projects have provided him with the opportunity to take risks and adjust to those results in a creative manner instead of with defeat or disappointment in his own abilities. Mentors have noted his increased confidence and independence towards both his works and his interactions with the group. Furthermore, his Facilitator notes that Aaron smiles a lot more than when he began, especially when presenting a completed project to the group.
In learning to believe in his own abilities, be patient with others and to adapt to things that do not go as planned, Aaron has carried away with him skills that will serve him well in other aspects of life such as school or his home life.
