She didn’t spare the young musician compliments about his skills he just presented to her, her laughter was  magnetizing; once their conversation was over, she realized she was being watched by someone from the court. She welcomed them with a curtsy and said : “ It’s not very polite to eavesdrop - however, since you already know about the party, we may discuss your invitation. “ 

qora was unsure of where she fit in the social hierarchy. she considered herself as more than equal to all of the other members of the court, but because she did not have the title that they had it seemed like they would barely talk to her, not invite her to many things. so when she heard of a banquet in the danish quarters she couldn’t help but listen, she was interested and maybe she would be invited. she did enjoy parties and maybe she could make the allies she wanted and needed. “i didn’t mean to, i could hear the details and i was interested. but if you’ll have me i would be delighted to be included.”

“look! in the bush! do you see the rabbits?” qora asked, pointing out at the little figures moving on the bottom of the bush. she was a fan of rabbits, having seen them everywhere at home and as a child she had kept a small pen of rabbits behind her house, all of them were held in her heart and had names. she had not been able to take them with her when she left and she missed them. “are they not so sweet!”

When in her chambers Constance almost always expected to be interrupted. Her children would often run about the apartment looking for their mother and of course her husband was able to come and go as he pleased. But she was slightly surprised to see someone she didn’t immediately recognise enter her room and quickly stood at the end of the bed.

“I’m afraid you may be lost, where is it you are looking to go?”

“i am not lost, i was looking to speak with you,” qora said looking over the woman. 

the former princess of poland was someone that she had hoped to speak to. they were both dealing with political strife and she imagined that they would both have to deal with new land, and a longing for their homes as they were. this would be an alliance that she hoped that she could keep. “how are you?”

         The duchess of Olbreuse tore her gaze away from her needlepoint and touched her fingertips to her scalp, unable to focus for the headache smarting within for the better part of the day. She found herself agitated and cross, belligerently dismissing her attendants before seeking out a secluded corner of court. Upon hearing footsteps entering the previously empty hall, Liddy’s head snapped toward the individual, and, before her better judgement stepped in, she said waspishly: “don’t you think to knock? It’s a marvel concept.” 

qora was actually lost, having been turned around. she was still fairly new to court and wasn’t totally sure where her quarters were and when a party had caused her to take a new path. she was very tired and when she entered the quiet corridor and the redheaded woman had called out to her she got a little bit frustrated. “i did not realize it was required to knock before i entered a public space. i thought that it was merely free for all to use.” she responded, attempting to keep her voice from having too steely and edge to it.

It was impossible for Sophia not to be self-conscious of her English accent. Though she had been tutored in the language since she was a child, the focus of her education had always been French – the language of European courts – and German, the most likely language of her future husband, and she felt clumsy in it. That only made her feel more uncomfortable in this, the future homeland and court of her younger sister - as if she needed another reason to hate being here !

“Pray, do excuse me,” she said, blushing a little. “It has been a long time since I spoke English with anyone other than my governess.”

qora was used to being the object of attention for the way that she spoke and the way that she presented herself. she had learned many languages, mostly she spoke her native quechua and the language of the spanish who had come to her country, but english had been much more recent addition to her abilities, and it showed at times. so when the woman in front of her shared a similar feeling of confusion she felt with the words. maybe these two could actually become friends. 

“it is no matter,” qora said with a smile. “my english is not as good either. and the english are so sensitive over their language, mocking those who do not speak it as their first language. but i think that it is always good to try.”
