Evaluation

My reflective presentation showcased what I had learned during this course, I felt that my presenting skills were quite rushed and that I didn’t fully discuss what I had learnt and how my work had progressed this term especially. I had hoped to go further into how my work this term has more meaning than the other modules, and how I prefer this work. I need to get more confidence in my images because I sometimes feel that the work isn’t as good as others because it’s so different, and so when talking about my work I don’t like going into a lot of detail.

 When joining this course, I wanted to further explore my photography interests rather than become a professional photographer. That is why I am not going to continue with the top up year after this course. I don’t want to become a professional photographer as it is especially hard when focusing on abstract photography. Although during the course I have learnt a lot about abstract photography I don’t see how I could take it further than a hobby.

  After I finish this term, I plan on not continuing further with education for at least a year. I plan on working else were and getting a small job to begin with, and then gradually build my way up to a more stable job overtime. I am not sure if I will go back into education after the year, I don’t know how much of a break I will need from education and I don’t know what will happen once I work.

Evaluation

When starting this project, I planned on it just being a continuation of my Location Photography module which was photographing movie references around Bristol through experimental light trails. However, after discussing the idea with my lecturer we decided that my project should have more of a meaning by focusing on something I was passionate about. At first, I struggled to let go of my Location Photography module work, but once I brainstormed ideas about climate change, I realised that my passion would be a good driving force for the module and that I had the ability to create some interesting work.

I researched a lot of current climate news articles as well as stories of mitigation in order to fully understand the current effect of climate change, its sources and how people were trying to prevent it. I knew that because of budget I would be able to capture photographs of climate change on a global environmental scale like some of the photographers I had researched, however the reoccurring theme of plastic littering our oceans and environment was a big cause of animal death. I felt that this was a problem which I would be able to showcase within my work as it is a very big issue locally and wouldn’t cost me anything to walk around the city photographing how litter is polluting our environment.

Even though I was photographing a serious topic, I wanted to keep to my interest of abstract art. Originally, I had planned to double expose nature shots over a littered environment to show how beautiful nature is but also how humans are destroying it, although once I started editing, I realised that I could create quite abstract images through rotating multiple copies of the same image and double exposing them together. I like this technique, and I feel it worked well with the litter, it turned a sort of boring documentary image into abstract pieces which still has meaning.

I do wish that I had more time for this project to be able to focus more on shooting individual bits of litter. Throughout the project I was inspired by the work of Keith Arnatt and Maisie Cousins, and I would have liked to photograph more up-close work of thrown out food and litter to show textures. But I do feel that this is a phase 2 side of the project in future.

Printing Finals

I have decided on the 4 finals I want to print at A4 for this module. I have chosen the best from my series of abstract litter, I really like these images and I think that they work well because there is 2 portrait and 2 landscape images. I did contemplate adding my protest portrait images, however I felt that they weren’t part of the final project and were more of a stepping stone into the final work so I have decided not to add them.

I bought my A4 prints from Boots as people in my class recommended them, however when the prints arrived I don’t feel that they are as good quality as they could be. I think the colours aren’t quite right and the images look kind of blurry, although this could be because i recently printing two of these images big for the exhibition and prefer that standard of quality and size, I think these images look better bigger and am glad i printed them as A4.

Printing finals for The Exhibition

Today, I printed my images for the exhibition. I printed both images on Oyster Paper at A1 costing me £36.

Printing went smoothly, I printed a test strip of each image before fully printing. I am happy with how my images turned out, I think the colours look very vibrant and having printed copies of the images allows more detail to be shown.

Below are my prints; next I have to lay my images out untouched so they can flatten as before of the printing used the paper does curve a bit which will make the image come of the wall when it hangs.

A1 Print Price

While booking my printing slot for next week, I was told that the college cannot print the size A0 anymore so I will have to print my images at A1. I’m still thinking of printing 2 A1 images as this will fill 1.68148 metres out of the 2.5m space I have been given. The reason I am not adding prints together to join into one big image is because that I think the white space will be good in order to allow the images to breath as they are very colourful and I don't want to overpower the space with my images.

Paper Quality

I am thinking of using Oyster Paper as I like the glossy texture however I am worried about how dark black ink looks on the page as it can take away detail on this paper. This is a problem I will sort during my test print and then I can change any paper details after.

Printing Sizes

I talked to my lecturer about what sizes to print my images in order to fill the space with my two images.

I told him that I planned on splitting my images over 2 prints and then connecting them together, however he mentioned that two A0 prints would fill the space by 2.02946 metres giving me 0.5 metres spare which would actually by a nice sized cap to have between the images. So I think that now I will only print two images at A0.

This will cost £40.5892 as it is £0.20p per centimetre, at 202.946 cm.

Printing Finals

Im deciding where to print my images for final major project. There is an option of printing at college for £0.20p per centimetre, however at Boots they charge £1.20 for each 12x8 print.

At college I worked out that my images would cost £5.93 each, as the 29.69cm multiplied by 0.20 is = 5.93 which is a lot just for one print so I think I will print more images at Boots for the same price as one would cost at college.

Printing Cost

Even-though I haven't decide which print layout I want yet, I have worked out the largest amount I will fill the space is 89.6 inches. Printing at college is 20p a centimetre.

Printing Size

My exhibition slot is 2.5 metres wide. Now that I know I want one landscape and one portrait image I have to work how how big to print these images to fill the space with only two images.

I plan on printing at college and the biggest size they can print is A0. I plan on “cutting” my image in half before printing, so I can print my image in sections so it will be bigger to fill up the space.

I converted 2.5 metres into inches which is 102.362 inches.

I then drew out the layout I could present the images, and sized how much room they would take up next to each other:

For my landscape image, I wanted to print it as two A1 portraits side by side, and then for my portrait image I thought two A1 landscapes on top of each other would look good. However, once I had added these sizes up thy come to 113 inches and my space is only 102.362 inches. (Image above).

My next idea was to have the landscape image printed on two A1 landscapes side by side which would equal 66.2 inches, and the portrait image printed over two A1 portrait on top of each other. This would equal 89.6 inches so it would fit in my space, however I’m not sure if the portrait image would looked stretched. (Image above).

Finally, I decided to see what printing the whole image on A0 would look like. This would equal 79.9 inches which is 9.7 inches smaller than the two images split over 4 A1s would be.

Im not sure about which I will use for my final, I don't know if the 89.6 inches of 2 images split over 4 A1 prints would look out of place and stretched. But I also don't think  the A0 will fill the space enough.

New Complete Portfolio

I requested a new printed book because the first one they previously sent came damaged and scratched. The new one I received today arrived with the undamaged and the images look great printed.

Portfolio Physical Copy

My printed portfolio arrived, however on almost every right page there is a series of scratches on the image either on the left or right top corner. I feel that this looks unprofessional and take away from the image, so I am planning on asking for a re-print.

I also wanted my name of the side but it has printed a different colour to the front on the front cover:
