Rocket Man Vs. Better Man
The cool thing about Fresh Plug is that it’s still fresh, new and the paradigm is always shifting. I can’t take credit for this particular shift, It was totally unexpected and brilliant courtesy of RMVBM. They sent a video instead of typed interview responses to my questions. It also saved me the trouble of typing and proofreading LOL
This dynamic duo reppin’ Auburn by the way of Brooklyn and Atlanta is covering all the bases with their hands in almost everything associated with music, from writing and drawing to mixing and engineering. Unlike most new artist, these guys have an interesting and well rounded perspective on the state of Hip Hop as well as the future of Hip Hop. Listening to their new release Rocket Man Vs. Better Man, left me with a reassuring feeling of relief that Hip Hop is very much alive and kicking. The production is bananas, the lyrics are cool and witty, the flows and delivery is smooth and solid. I really enjoyed listening.
I love to have this type of music playing when my friends come over just so I can have something fresh to introduce to them. I like to think of RMVBM as the guys who birthed oxygen… let that soak in. *FP ~ #IPlugzWitcha

PEN PALS
Hip Hop has changed so much over the past 20 years that if you turned on the radio, even the most popular song would lack the true essence of Hip Hop. You would have to search high to low to find that organic sound that made you fall in love with Hip hop to begin with. I have found that sound in a group from Tuscaloosa, Alabama and their name is Pen Pals.
Listening to Pen Pals kinda took me back to when Hip hop was at its peak. That’s when you had acts such A Tribe Called Quest, Souls Of Mischief, Keith Murray, KRS-One and you had producers like Pete Rock, Premeir and RZA dominating the mixing boards, when Hip hop had that golden sound and every other genre of music wanted to associate with. Pen Pals lyrical ability is far from mediocre. Don’t be surprised if you find your ears doing a doubletake to catch some of the tricky and witty wordplay. Here’s one song that grabbed me from the 2013 Secret Stages Sampler in which they were one of the featured groups to perform. http://secretstages.bandcamp.com/track/punch-line-poetry-prod-by-pumpkinfoot
Since I’m a newbie to Pen Pals music, I decided to take a different approach and interview them. Here’s what they had to say.
Who are the Pen Pals? Pen Pals consists of 2 emcees, Fathom (Ian Brooken) and sLanguage (David Redwine)
How did you meet and how long have you been emceeing?Me and Fathom started running into each other in random places, then actually met through the 2 other emcees I rapped with before. They were hosting battles on the UA campus and he came to one. Started kickin it and freestyling. The rest is history. Fathom started rapping in high school, and I’ve been doing it since I was about 7. My family has a musical background, and picked it up from my dad and my aunt I guess.
Who are you influences? There are really too many to name. We’re both influenced by a ton of stuff from different genres. And those influences tend to change as well, so that’s really hard to answer specifically.
In your opinion, Is Hip Hop dead? Neither of us believe hip-hop is dead, but as Fathom says “it may be in a state of emergency”. For the most part, I think hip-hop, or true hip-hop anyway, is as alive and thriving as ever. There’s always going to be really bad stuff force fed to you. Just comes with the territory. But if you’re willing to search even a little, and shut out the mindless stuff, you realize quickly hip-hop is doing well.
What advice would you give up and coming artists thats fresh in the game? STAY TRUE
If there was no money in music, would you still record? Most definitely. We don’t really eat off it now, and we love it tremendously regardless.
What would you be doing if you wasn’t doing music? Not really sure about that. We’re both into a lot of other different stuff, so it’s hard to say where life would be taking us if music wasn’t what we were choosing to pursue
If you could change anything about today’s music, what would you change? There needs to be a more defined balance between artists of substance and artists who are just cashing checks and doing whatever, within the mainstream. That’s the most prominent issue to the both of us.
With this new era of artists, who would you say is still holding it down for hip Hop? TDE (Kendrick, Ab-Soul, etc) , PRO ERA (Joey Bada$$, Capital Steez, etc), Blu, Homeboy Sandman. This list is humongous for real, so we’ll stop there. There’s a lot of people really doing different stuff with the music, that stand out for one reason or another.
If Hip Hop was structured similar to the government, Who would you nominate for President? GZA Genius
How do you feel about other artists from your state and what should we all be doing collectively to push more Alabama artists to the mainstream? We have a lot of respect and love for other Bama artists. The main issue I think we come across is the fact that most people see their musical peers as a stepping stone rather than a building block. If we could better unite, it would be really hard to hold Bama back from getting it’s deserved shine.
What’s your favorite place to perform and why? Bottletree in Birmingham is definitely the favorite spot. So much hospitality from the place itself, and the crowds (for the shows we’ve been a part of, at least), have always showed a lot of love and respect for what we do. That means a lot to us because all our shows there have been with bands of other genres. It’s always eclectic, and dope to be a part of.
Does life imitate music or does music imitate life? It’s definitely a combination of both. Without life there is no music. And music IS life for a lot of people.
Who should I plug next? The homies RMVBM (Rocket Man vs Better Man) out of Auburn!

SHAHEED & DJ SUPREME
When I asked Inkline (our last plug), “Who should we plug next?”, I kinda thought I was going to be directed to an artist or group that I never heard of. To my surprise, he recommended Shaheed & DJ Supreme. My face lit up. “This should be easy”, I said to myself since I’m familiar with them and their music. Surprisingly, it wasn’t as easy as I imagined. Especially when you dealing with a group with an extensive and large catalogue of work. I also learned that it’s a big difference between listening to an artist and hearing them. Yeah, yeah… I’ve been hearing Shaheed & DJ Supreme regularly on Vulcanite Radio, I have watched most if not all the videos. I even find myself reciting the lyrics of my favorite songs from time to time. All the while I still wasn’t really listening until now.
Listening to Shaheed & DJ Supreme reminded me of why I fell in love with Hip hop in the first place. It took me listening to the entire Knowledge, Rhythm And Understanding album from beginning to ending to realize how extraordinary these guys are. Shaheed’s bold and courageous verbal stance against ignorance with DJ Supreme’s unique and idiosyncratic style of production merges to form something magical.
Now, If you are friends with the brother Shaheed on Facebook, then you know just visiting his page and checking out his posts can fill you up spiritually. I mean, dude posts are very enlightening, encouraging, and filled with knowledge. That knowledge also radiates through his lyrics. I was especially impressed by Beautiful Black Ethiopian Skin feat. Angela King. Don’t let the kufi fool ya‘ though. One of this dude’s guilty pleasures is eating emcees alive. I have had the pleasure of catching this dude live on stage and seen it with my own eyes. He definitely controls the crowd and sets the pace for other emcees to follow.
Now let’s briefly talk about DJ Supreme. If you are a loyal listener of The Classic Hip Hop Show with Supreme, then you may also know him as the Hip Hop Encyclopedia. I sometimes go to him when I need to know something and I’m a know-it-all. You can now catch his show on Substrate Radio. Here’s another fact many folks don’t know about Supreme, he’s also a very talented and well respected emcee. As far as production you’d have to be a serious Hip Hop head to understand how special his production is. You can put his production up against the major heavy hitters such as Premeir, Jazzy Jeff, Pete Rock, or J Dilla,
What I dig the most about these guys is the fact that their music is family friendly. You can listen to it with kids in the room, you don’t have to worry about offending big momma, and overall it’s just real feel good music. Shaheed and DJ Supreme’s music possesses something that all the great groups before them had and many of these new cats are missing and that’s MAGIC… the type of magic that can’t be duplicated or recreated. It just has to happen!!!!

INKLINE
PlugOfTheMonth: INKLINE ~ Taking advantage of what some take for granted
Since I’m new to Inkline’s music, I decided to put on my Hip Hop head’s fitted cap and listen to his music as a fan and not a critic. So when Vulcanite Radio our #PlugOfTheMonth from last month named the next person to plug, I immediately started following Inkline on twitter and clicking on every link I could possibly find without even contacting him.
The first song I stumbled upon was “The 5th” an unreleased track from 2009, one of many songs he recorded while in the group “Outtnowhere“ (Ink & Skep) My first thought listening to “The 5th” was… Dope… it had that feel of something you heard prior to the “iceage” of Hip hop. Back when it was about lyrics. I was expecting Redman or someone from The Lox to make a guest appearance, LOL. Although it wasn’t mixed and mastered, it really didn’t matter, because that is what made it RAW and real, True hip hop heads can appreciate songs like this.
Another song that grabbed my attention was “Ink 2.0” where he flexed his lyrical ability and took you back to straight spittin’ with his clever wordplay. Prior to being recorded, these two “Go-to-verses” originally was just something to spit in ciphers to help make the time go by faster during his 3 year stint with the Alabama Dept. Of Corrections. Inkline is not shy at all about his recent release nor is he proud of it. He was released last year and has been in grind mode since. Looking at the extensive catalog of songs in his discography you would think he spent the last few years in the studio. He has done more than some of the cats out here walking around free, which brings me to the song that I should have listened to first… "Gettin’ Out”
Some people get locked up and let that experience turn them into someone else. They come out worse than when they went in and somehow it lands them back in. Then you have others who use that time wisely for self-evaluation and plot on success. They hit the ground running and try to reverse the effects of life behind bars and you can see this progression in their work ethic. Inkline is a true example of this. He didn’t waste any time getting back in the studio and recording fresh new music.
Although the phrase “Gettin’ Out”might be synonymous with being released from jail, I can’t help but associate it with breaking into the music business. FRESHPLUG will definitely do our part to assist you in “Gettin’ Out” #IPlugzWitcha ~DJClassic
“Gettin’ Out“ is the first single off the upcoming album ”Stones Cry“ Produced by Es Nine (of Prime Element) This track finds Inkline facing the challenges of transitioning back into a society that now seems foreign to him

PlugOfTheMonth: VULCANITE RADIO ~ “Hip hop internet radio station brought to you by The Green Seed. Changing the rules of radio”
If you are like me, then you probably get annoyed listening to FM radio now-a-days. You probably get tired of the same ole’ artists cloning each others styles and sounds, even the names are similar. It got so bad that I eventually stopped listening to the radio and just relied on my good old faithful CD collection… Until I stumbled across Vulcanite Radio. I was instantly hooked with throw back classic songs like “Luchini” by Camp Lo, or just hearing from classic groups you haven’t heard on the radio in ages like De La Soul or Tribe Called Quest.
I think it was all over for me when I heard the word "Birmingham" in one of the songs. But I couldn’t rewind to see if my ears were playing tricks on me. I am now curious to know more about this station with Birmingham’s city symbol, The Vulcan as it’s logo. Could it be a Birmingham based Internet Hip Hop station? how cool is that? Not only was my assumptions right, but this new radio station also plays local, up and coming artists from Birmingham and not just for one hour like some radio stations have started, but it’s a common thing to hear the local cats at any given time of the day. YES, they are in regular rotation with the mainstream artists and their music is just as good as the heavy hitters. I had no idea Alabama had so many talented artists. I also came to find out that it was not hard to get played on Vulcanite Radio. For an artist to get spins on this radio station is quite simple. All they would have to do is have good music and send it in.
Some of the other highlights of Vulcanite Radio are the interviews with artists and their responses to the “Rapid Fire” questions. the audio clips from movies that are really funny. once you hear them you’ll be trying to figure out what movie did that line come from. My favorites are the Tyler Perry’s Madea and Arnold Schwarzeneggar’s lines from some of those classic movies. The audio drops from various artist around Birmingham are cool too in which they all use that signature catch phrase “Get You Some" ~ that phrase has been my motto since stumbling across Vulcanite Radio and ties in perfectly with our brand FRESHPLUG because you have to stick the plug in to "Get You Some” #IPlugWitcha ~ DJClassic
