Freya & Merlin | 2.09 "The Lady of the Lake"
L: What's the verdict?
M: Well. You're sure to die…
M: ...of old age. This will heal in less than a week
L: MERLIN.
For four consecutive years I joined to the @merlin-fic-server Tournament of Champions, and my honor is intact because I finished the challenge, and did a 10 frames story in less than 24 hours. The prompts this year were varied but I choose AUTUMN, I used a poem that fitted the theme (because, 1, I can't write poetry to save my life, and 2, I'm ona trip and with less time than the last tournament). Btw, this is an indirect sequel to the 2022 entry, this is like the Merlin POV, and the other is Arthur's POV. Thank you to the mods, the group 1 that suffered with me, and to the random girl that edited my work on the festival.

Bonus:
Me: Merlin and Freya only knew each other for a maximum of three days, so they couldn’t have been in love per se, but their bond was important nevertheless. These were two lonely teenagers, both ostracized from society, neither with enough self-worth to hold themself up. But they came together and supported each other in the ways they needed most. They barely scratched the surface of each other’s personalities since their time together was so short-lived, but this relationship was not shallow in any sense of the term. Merlin freed Freya in more ways than one, and she returned the favor, which makes it all the more heartbreaking when she dies—she represented his potential for happiness, freedom, and self-love, only to lose her almost as soon as he met her. It’s clear that his despondency in later seasons stems from this loss, as he no longer believes himself capable of finding the love he desires, or an escape from the responsibilities he’s resigned himself to. The fates orchestrated the tragedy of Merlin’s life so that he would not stray from his path, utterly destroying him in the process. In the end, he never got to join his loved ones in the afterlife, when all he ever wanted was to not be lonely anymore.
Me the second I see them onscreen: OMG THEY’RE SO IN LOVE

When I started reading Butter by Asako Yuzuki, I thought it was gonna be a dark social commentary that ended with murder—and instead I got such a personal, emotional story about realizing your own self-worth, absolving yourself of guilt and shame, refusing to let toxic people ruin your life, and healing yourself by reaching out and sharing genuine moments with the people around you. I 😭😭😭 oh my god. It is fantastic. It’s about connecting with others through food it’s about how everyone gets so wrapped up in society and standards and what we hate that we lose sight of genuine moments and true friends and what we love it’s it’s it’s it’s just SO GOOD—
MERLIN | 1.01
That detail of Arthur reaching for the hilt of his sword here is excellent. I love you! whomever ever pointed that out first; kissing you on the mouth etc etc.
But I also think this entire scene here, explains the dynamic between the three of them very simply.
It’s so clear. Uther strangling Morgana in the most deliberate and vicious way possible, but also pointedly detached. A glove concealing any skin-to-skin contact ie their true relation. He could hypothetically see Arthur readying himself in the corner, but is too focused on silencing her.
And Morgana has her eyes on just him. Fighting for air. She can’t see Arthur with his hands on the sword hilt, privately agreeing with and defending her. His efforts are wasted.
And Arthur? He watches everything unfold from a bystander’s vantage point. Morgana turning her back on him in favor of survival. He’s a comfortable distance enough away that his presence isn’t necessarily emergent. For what it’s worth, he’s posturing; hand-on-hilt but too many paces away to step in, if an intervention was asked of him. He’s also terrified, watching the entire thing play out like a twisted tableau of a family embrace.
And for all intents and purposes, it is.
