I’ve seen a couple of posts about people’s own tribes, so thought maybe you guys would want some asks about mine yours.
What is the average day like in the tribe?
What is an extensive holiday they celebrate?
How about religious worship? Are they zealots or laid back about their gods? Do their ‘priests’ have a special role in the community or are they an entity on their own?
Do they celebrate any natural occurrences? Changing of the seasons? Moon phases? What is the importance of these events?
Do they have a coming of age ceremony? For boys? Girls? In between or none at all?
How about rites of passage. Do they have to prove themselves to become adults or is it less traditional and more of what ‘these kids today’ are doing for themselves? Do they celebrate certain birthdays?
How are children treated as a whole in the tribe? Do they have schools? Hunting grounds? Playgrounds? Do they work or do they play?
Who are the people who rule the tribe? Is it one ruler or a chain of command?
Military might: How well does the tribe defend itself. What weapons do they traditionally use? Are there certain strategies they tend towards?
Are they a warring tribe? Do they have any enemies? How do they handle people who oppose them?
Do they trade? Within the tribe? Outside of the tribe? With who, and what do they use as money?
What is considered rich in their culture? How can you tell from an average tribesperson their standing?
Is your tribe nomadic or stationary? How long have they stayed in their current position? Why did they choose to settle here?
Who are their allies? Do they have any or do they prefer to keep their conflicts and resolutions to themselves? If they do have allies, why did they choose them to open up their land?
Do you consider your tribe to be ‘breeders’ or ‘free’? As in, is there a set amount of people that can have children? How are they chosen? Why wouldn’t everyone be able to have kids? What’s the purpose of this?
How large is your tribe? Has it always been this size, or has their been a tragedy/boom to cause this? What was it?
Who do they worship? Why? How do they show their God/Goddess’ that they revel in their glory?
What are their God’s like, in depth. Do they lean towards a personality type like guardian or war-lord? What about the Gods anger, what does the tribe do if they think they’ve angered their deity?
What does their place of worship look like? Is it a permanent dwelling or can it be easily packed away if the tribe is nomadic? If not and they are nomadic, why not? What does it look like inside and out?
Who can be seen inside a place of worship on an average day? Why are they there? What’s their role in religious ceremonies?
What is a religious ceremony, and where does it take place? Why? What do they do to prepare for the event, if at all?
Where do the tribe leaders hold council? Do they keep the common people out or allow them to see inside their proceedings?
Guard posts. Does your tribe have any? What are they guarding? Do guards ever trade places with hunters, or are they one and the same? Do they even have guards at all?
Do they have any pilgrimages? Where do the tribespeople go? Why? What are they hoping to gain? How long is the journey, and do people make it to their destination most of the time?
Hunters; does your tribe have hunters, or does everyone gather food for their one family? How much food, and how long a trip does it take to feed the family, or tribe?
What does the nuclear family unit look like? Is there even one at all? Do grandparents stay in the same house and their children and their children’s children, or does the family unit spread?
Where does everyone live? Huts? Houses? Adobes? Why?
Where do they work? Is it near a market or do they huddle workers together in one location? Do they have a different social standing compared to the rest of the tribe? Why?
Markets: Do they have one, and is it diverse in clientele or just to their own tribe? Why?
Where does the tribe bury their dead? Do they have a ceremony or is it a quiet funeral among the deceased’s loved ones? What is an average funeral like?
Do they have ‘old wives tales’? Do they use them to keep kids away from dangerous areas or are they just superstition? Are your people superstitious?
What does your tribe do for fun or leisure? Do they consider leisure to be a waste of time, or something important for people to observe?
Do they often paint themselves for ceremonies? For looks? Why? What do they look like for each ceremony if they do?
What about tattoos? Do they have any that have meaning or are tattoos for looks? What do they look like, and why are they on a particular body part?
What about colors? Does your tribe have a banner, and if so why were the colors chosen? What about on paint and tattoos, do those have meanings as well?
Do they have totems? What are they and why have they been chosen? Protection?
What do their clothes look like on an average day? Why do they wear them, and do different classes wear different items, or are clothes not considered a part of their system?
What about armor? Does everyone have armor or just a select few? Do they differ depending on job descriptions?
Weapons: What does the tribe use on a daily basis, if they all had to use one? Are they all different regardless? What about offensive magic? What is that like?
Does magic play a vital role in your tribe, or is it more of a tool as a hammer or spade? What does the average magic wielder use their magic for? Why?
Healers: what do your tribe’s healers look like? Why? Do they deal in poultices, potions, conjury, or a combination? None at all? Are they adept in this field?
Traders: What is a common item they have to trade? Is it food or potions? Weapons or cloth? Do they travel with their wares to sell or do merchants have to come to them?
What is the average diet like? What about dessert? Do they have any special culinarian items that could be sought after? What is it?
How to they transport items or people? Do they have caravans? What about mounts, or do they often walk from area to area?
Does your tribe place much stock in having pets or no? Do these pets have a purpose like mice hunting or guard dogs or are they simply companions?
What is your tribe known to create? Jewelry or weapons or cloth or anything along these lines? Do they farm? What crops are needed for survival?
Do they wear anything special for certain holidays or religious ceremonies? What are they?
Do they have anything their missing or cannot make within their tribe? If there is, what’s the import and who do they often get it from?
