always remember
my bones ached and mind hurt as i stumbled between the consonants of their unfamiliar names. at 2:50 in the morning we had just finished reading the first book of names who were lost in the holocaust. sitting in a dining room which smelled like stale beer and weed, we had nonetheless created a sanctuary. those who we had lost came alive through the candles, our voices, and our togetherness. each time i struggled to read a name, that person ceased to be a statistic of 6 million and became a human. a human with a past, with a future; who lost everyone who meant the most to her and had her life snatched under her. a human who if I had been born just 60 years earlier, could have been me.
