Show-only IWTV fans: what do you like?
So obviously the IWTV show is doing really well. It's constantly trending, has high critical reviews, and AMC puts enough trust in it to be the flagship of several spinoffs like the Talamasca series.
But as someone for whom the books were my very first Special Interest (TM), I can't approach the show from a fresh perspective. As much as I try to enjoy it as an AU/original story, I can't un-know over a decade of book fandom. Which means it's very hard for me to see what someone else is seeing in the show, or what they might enjoy about it.
This is not trying to be snarky or dismissive, I am genuinely very curious what people who have never read the books like about the show.
Take, for example, Season 2 Episode 3. I was really excited for this one because Nicolas de Lenfent is my favorite character. But the backstory of Lestat and Armand, from the perspective of a book fan, seems choppy and heavily edited. Main characters are missing, Lestat just shows up with a cross with no explanation for how he knew that would work, the dynamics between the characters are different. Among fellow book fans, a lot of the reactions I was seeing were along the lines of "Lol, this is Armand's Wattpad fanfiction of events".
But I imagine the intention of the showrunners wasn't to make people laugh at those scenes. It's hard for me to imagine how the scenes wouldn't seem random and kind of a pointless tangent if you don't know the underlying canon. So I'm genuinely interested to find out how that section came across to show fans, as well as what show fans like and get out of the show in general.
