harper had felt almost in the pits of despair lately, her mental illness pushing her mood further and further down with the weight of the crushing realization that she was alone. sure, she had people like charlotte and the few others she worked with, but after work hours, she’d spent her time completely and totally alone and the gripping desolation had left her ruined. that’s why she was out late at the bar, drinking her pain away.
a sad smile spread on her face when a familiar face entered the bar; she stood, wobbling briefly, and went to greet them. “heeeeeyy.” she slurred. “it’s ssso nice to see youuu. i haven’ seen you since the cruise!”
getting back from vacation had left ellie in an emotional limbo, and she wasn’t entirely certain about how she was supposed to react to such a thing. on one hand, she was overjoyed to be back in her own bed, the constant swaying of the boat moving no longer lulling her to sleep and adjusting to a dozen different timezones were now things of the past. and on the other hand, she was almost depressed to be back, returning to the swing of things which was ultimately work. she’d turned into the closest bar to her gym after her evening workout, and while she wasn’t there for a drink, she was merely there to get in an unbiased space, to clear her head outside of her own four walls.
"harper,” ellie smiled when she recognized the face sitting on the barstool. her arms opened wide to envelop harper in a hug, almost sensing something off the closer and closer she got. “it’s really good to see you too, babe, how are you?”
“i’m quite aware of those things,” celeste replied in a tone that betrayed her apparent attention on the woman situated not so far from her. “been a victim of those — you click on something accidentally and suddenly you’re spamming everyone with porn videos, promoting things you never wanted to promote in the first place.” taking one last glance on the photo recently uploaded by a colleague, celeste finally regarded ellie with a singular, languid blink of her eyes, hands resting on her stomach, phone neglected beside her head on the deck. “but i was talking about these people spamming me with photos about the whole trip. then again, that’s considered a normal thing nowadays, no? it’s not considered spamming if you’re merely sharing what’s been happening in your life. i’m just the odd one.” she snorted, eyes slowly rolling as she turned her head to her left, glancing at her phone. “the first and last thing i said in the internet whilst i am on this trip is the fact that i am still alive.”
ellie nodded understandingly, or as understandingly as she could. it seemed that there were several topics where she and celeste traveled down the same road for only a short distance until the inevitable fork appeared. she’d never been in the other woman’s shoes before, so it was hard to see where she was coming from in varying situations, but ellie would always be the person who would at the very least try. “some people capture their time differently. some like to post it, others don’t; all a person preference, i think. i guess some people are just more...acclimated to sharing every little detail of their lives with the public. for some of us it’s how we got our start.” her shoulders rolled in a nonchalant shrug. “to each his own, though.”
the one thing that dash tries his best to be as a father is present — there for leah when she needs him, or even when she doesn’t. he knows he’ll make mistakes along this long road of parenthood ( it would be naive of him to think differently ) but the biggest mistake he could make, in his opinion, is being absent, like so many fathers are to children that may not have been planned.
but, GOD, did he need a break.
it had been over two years since dash had a proper vacation: meaning, one lasting longer than just a day away. still, even this vacation hadn’t been the most relaxing thing in the world. of course, dash was grateful to v entertainment for allowing him to see some beautiful countries, meet amazing people and take a break from the pressures of everyday life, but there had still been work involved, both in the traditional sense, and in the parental sense.
so when dash approaches the bar, alone for the first time in a long time, he’s looking for some alcohol to enjoy by the pool as a twenty-four year old before reclaiming his role of father. long fingers tap against the cool counter as he tries his best not to worry about leah, who had, thankfully, been exceptionally excited to hang out with a friend of dash’s that had volunteered to take care of her for a few hours. as much as he may have needed some time off, he still has his paternal instincts intact, and every few seconds the thought to call flashes into his brain.
when he hears someone speaking to him, he’s appreciative of the distraction, even moreso when he realizes who is offering it to him. “ i think we could, ” he agrees with a warm smile, pleased to see the brunette. it’s a relief to him to see her look genuinely happy — so often, her eyes look exhausted or exasperated, the grin on her face forced. he figures there’s probably a lot of people at v that deserve a vacation, but ellie might have been the only one that needed one for her health. ( dash can’t pretend to know what she’s going through, but he can worry. he’s a father, after all. )
“ live off a boat, get off of it only when we need food and stuff, and when we do get off, it’s at beautiful islands and countries… yeah, i could definitely get used to that life. ” he chuckles at the thought ( though mostly to himself ) as he sips at the dripping bottle in his hands, savoring in the taste. it’s been a while since he’s had the time and energy to finish a drink that wasn’t gatorade, water, or a juice box, and he couldn’t be more grateful to this cruise for awarding him that simple luxury.
at the mere sound of dash’s voice, ellie immediately feels her spirits grow. her company these past few days has been company she’s been stripped of ever since coming off tour, company that’s put the most authentic of smiles on her face to the point where her cheeks have ached and her eyes have been squinted not any thanks to the sun burning down on her. dash, however, has been a friendly face she’s missed almost every time she steps foot out of her room, and while it’s completely understandable — this is, after all, a vacation, and if anyone deserves a break at all it’s dash with the responsibility of leah, the ray of light she sees in his eyes — she has to admit that it’s been almost a little disappointing missing out on his company as she tries to take the few moments for herself and spends the rest with the fans. over the past few weeks she’s warmed up to his presence, found herself talking faster and faster whenever the conversation rerouted in a way she couldn’t suppress the excitement for. sure, the future collaborating was certainly a thrilling thing to think on, but rarely did ellie see ingenuity in people. dash was the diamond in the coal she’s been on her hands and knees rummaging for.
“certainly would be nice,” she muses, shooting him a smile. “not to say that i wouldn’t start to miss my job...i think at some point i’d get tired of the endlessly doing nothing here on the boat. we could make it like vegas, have shows every once in awhile.” her glass finally arrives, slender fingers wrapping around the frosted glass and leaving fingerprints as she grabs it from the coaster. she’s grateful for something cold, tropical, a last reminder of all the good this trip’s done.
“have you been enjoying yourself?” the question sounds like a courtesy, but she’s genuinely curious as to how dash’s time has been. after all, she’d like to consider him something like a friend; not everyone spent their time the same way ellie did on the trip, and she’s merely curious to know more. throw in the fact that she does enjoy whatever time she gets in dash’s company, and ellie’s making herself comfortable on the bar stool, all but throwing the idea of any packing to the wind.
❝ maybe they think the moon’s adequate lighting —- which it’s not. there should definitely be candles. ❞
"probably, what with the whole being stranded out in the middle of the ocean thing...getting closer to nature or something. i certainly agree, i could go for a nice scented candle or something. getting kinda tired of the clinical smell of the hallways on the way to my room.”
she had been swamped, sure, but ellie had never felt more in her element.
sure, while this certainly didn’t feel like the vacations she was used to — her idea of vacation was holing up somewhere where the paparazzi couldn’t stick a lens and gaining five pounds at the minimum — she was much more at ease than she had been ever since hopping off a worldwide tour. cameras were certainly in her face any time fans came by, more conversations striked up on a daily basis than she was used to, and hiding away in her room wasn’t much of an option, even if she wasn’t on contract with v. there were too many beautiful places to see where she wasn’t on a work schedule, and being surrounded by people who cared for her had done wonders for the inspiration drought she’d fallen into. being around her fans and friends and far, FAR away from the label heads was just what she had needed. writing was now a daily practice, and ellie was almost ashamed at the stack of napkins and receipts building up on her nightstand with lyric ideas whenever housekeeping came by to change the linens.
she’d decided to make one more sweep by the on-deck bar for a virgin pina colada to assist with the rest of her packing adventures (ellie always came home with more stuff than she’d set off with and this of course was no exception to the theory, so she always had to start earlier than most), enjoying the feel of the ocean’s breeze ruffling her hair. “wonder if we could make the whole travelling circus thing a permanent reality?” she wondered aloud, mostly to herself, but she was sure that her voice carried in the wind. “hasn’t been as bad as i thought.”
“Isn’t it tiring to write all these blogs?” Celeste asked to no one in particular, eyes locked on the screen of her phone as she scrolled through her social media’s feed, body carelessly sprawled on the ship’s deck. “What’s with all the spam? Jesus Christ.”
ellie glanced over, pushing her sunglasses onto her forehead to get a better look at where the questions had originated. a soft smile spread over her lips as she shrugged, legs crossing absentmindedly. sunbathing had proved to be a nice way to kill time while on the ship, and while a tan certainly wasn’t in the works after all the vitamin d she’d meticulously planned on soaking up, it had left her feeling in a better mood. “could be porn,” she noted out optimistically, rolling her shoulders in a shrug. “most of the time spammers are just those weird little bots...although, come to think of it, i’ve never actually seen any proof of those existing so maybe they’re just people sitting behind desks getting paid minimum wage to send spam for nine hours straight.”
“ i mean —- the dark can be fun, too. right ? “
"as long as you aren’t afraid of the dark, i suppose. sure would be nice to have a little light though — you’d think with this boat being in the water all the time it could spare a few candles.”
