i’m kind of tired of seeing guilt-trippy posts about The Get Down like ‘’y’all are racist bc u liked stranger things but won’t give this a chance’’ because while it’s TRUE that the black/latino cast and characters are super Important, they’re not the only good thing about the show so here are other reasons you should watch the show:
THE MUSIC. super important. the music is so fukcn good ok i want to to inject ‘’set me free’’ straight into my bloodstream
the soundtrack includes artists like zayn, christina aguilera, miguel, etc
THE COLORS. it’s all bright colors and pretty palettes and every character has kind of their Signature Color and it’s super pleasing to the eye
it’s directed by Baz Lurhmann, who made Moulin Rouge! and you can bet he brings the same over the top colors, sounds, and emotionality that he did with nicole kidman and ewan mcgregor and it’s just as if not more effective this time around
Lurhmann also made the great gatsby which some of y’all liked so
it’s Accurate as fuck. not only is Grandmaster Flash a character, the real Flash was a producer on the show along with other legends like Nas, who also wrote songs for the show
Strong Female Character puts her career before her relationship and isn’t villainized for it
there’s a very dark scene where diff characters are put into positions of vulnerability by people in power and it’s not played down. a man actually looks a woman in the face and says “you raped me. that was rape.” which is something i’ve never seen on tv before
IT’S ALSO FUNNY THO i promise. there are some serious moments of comedy and they’re wonderful
“i’m more partial to the piccolo flute myself” honestly the whole show is worth it for that one line thank u jaden smith for existing
jaden smith basically plays himself with a huge afro. that’s it. that’s kind of the only difference between jaden and dizzee.
a character named Ra-Ra who wears cut off jean shorts and knee high socks is the voice of reason and logic
the littlest one is named Boo Boo and he sings like michael jackson at one point and its truly amazing
jaden smith’s char has an OC he paints which is a well-dressed alien named after the poet Rumi like srsly guys it doesn’t get better than this
the entire montage for Telepathy??
shameik moore is a main character. he’s the guy from Dope, and at one point he dances around in just his sneakers and tightie whities and it’s wonderful.
he’s also a little gay for the other main Zeke and their friendship is honestly fascinating to watch
look i can keep going but this is getting long and annoying just watch the show please it’s so good and needs ratings thanks
