Already a major player in the 35mm SLR camera segment, Fujifilm began R&D into a camera that could stand up to rain, sea spray, and more. In June 1979, Fujifilm launched the HD-1 FUJICA, which was resistant to water, sand, and corrosion.
This camera featured a tough polycarbonate body for extra mechanical strength, as well as a waterproofing ring for outstanding water resistance. Further, the lens was encased under protective glass to prevent the incursion of sand, dust, and debris.
Empowering photographers to work in extremely challenging conditions and environments, the HD-1 FUJICA found use in a wide variety of fields. With this model, Fujifilm created an entirely new segment in the market: the heavy-duty camera.

The worldâs first autoflash point-and-shoot camera
After introducing the Pocket FUJICA in Japan, Fujifilm expanded sales to overseas markets. In order to make the camera easier to hold and help prevent bad shots due to camera shake, in later models Fujifilm changed the positioning of the film inside from horizontal to vertical. These and other innovations encouraged more people to take up photography and spurred sales to even greater heights.
Fujifilm continued to look for new ways to enhance the Pocket FUJICA line. Market research conducted by the company indicated that 75% of point-and-shoot camera users found flash photography difficult and inconvenient. So, in 1978, Fujifilm introduced the high-end Pocket FUJICA 550 Auto, which featured an integrated pop-up flash. The flash was automatic and light output even adjusted to match lighting conditions. In combination with the cameraâs autoexposure function, the autoflash made it easy to take beautiful photographs and avoid mistakes that wasted valuable film. This feature was a worldâs first for a point-and-shoot camera and made the Pocket FUJICA 550 Auto yet another milestone product for Fujifilm.

The film that changes color with pressure: Prescale!
Prescale is combination of a film coated with microcapsules containing color couplers and a film coated with a developer. When pressure is applied to the surface of Prescale, these elements interact, and the color of the sheet changes wherever pressure is applied. Morever, the greater the pressure applied to an area of the sheet, the deeper the resulting color. Depending on the application, the results can be measured either visually or with a special device. In addition, Prescale sheets retain their color pattern after use and can be stored long term for future reference.
Before Prescale, measuring pressure required large-scale machinery and complicated calculations, but Prescale made it possible to perform this task with a glance. Since its introduction, it has found applications in industry, medicine, and academic research, including testing and product design of all types.
In recent years, Prescale has been combined with the use of digital image analysis systems to perform many different types of high-precision pressure analysis. Prescale applications continue to expand, limited only by human ingenuity!

The worldâs first 400 ASA high-sensitivity color film: FUJICOLOR F-II400!
In planning for FUJICOLOR F-II400, Fujifilm performed market research and discovered that there was high demand for a film that would make indoor photography easier and help solve the issues of camera shake and low light conditions. Fujifilm decided that the best way to satisfy these needs was to make a film so sensitive that it would require no flash bulbs or special lighting.
Fujifilm considered the level of sensitivity required, eventually settling upon 400 ASA, which would raise the sensitivity of the film in indoor settings while minimizing risk of overexposure outdoors. To achieve this standard, Fujifilm developed new technologies that helped deliver over four times the sensitivity of previous color film.
Since it removed the need for a flash in most situations, FUJICOLOR F-II400 made color photography more accessible everywhere. The fact that Fujifilm was ahead of European and American manufacturers in introducing this revolutionary product gave a further boost to its reputation as a global photographic film manufacturer. In 2015, Japanâs National Museum of Nature and Science registered the film as an âEssential Historical Material for Science and Technology.â

Fujifilmâs PET film makes it easier to make things!
After considering many options, Fujifilm decided to focus on PET (polyethylene terephthalate), since it offered both strength and the right texture and feel for a wide range of applications. Fujifilm expected demand to grow significantly.
As the first fruit of its PET R&D, Fujifilm launched a PET-based Fujifilm Sealon Film in 1975. This thin film was highly air-tight and stretchable and adhered well to a wide range of surfaces. It also maintained its integrity in a wide temperature range (-70 to +55 °C) and offered outstanding resistance to degradation from water, ethanol, and acid and alkali chemicals. Thanks to these benefits, the film was widely used as a packing material and as sealant for containers and pipes.
Building on this success, Fujifilm launched Fuji PT Film in 1979. The product was used in a wide range of applications, including calendars, posters, stickers, labels, seals, overhead projection sheets, and general lamination. Since the launch of these products in the 1970s, Fujifilm continues to be a leader in PET film and to develop new products and applications.

The compact SLR camera that took light metering to the next level!
Fujifilm had been engaged in 35 mm R&D for a number of years and was working to incorporate all of its innovations in compact and lightweight design in its first 35 mm offering. In 1970, Fujifilm launched its long-awaited first TTL (through-the-lens metering) SLR, the FUJICA ST701, offering it for sale in both the domestic and export markets.
Weighing in at just 780 g, the FUJICA ST701 offered the worldâs most compact body, starting the global trend of compact 35 mm SLRs. And inside the camera were many technologies original to Fujifilm. For example, to increase the precision of the cameraâs light metering function, Fujifilm decided not to use a cadmium sulfide (CdS) light meter, which lacked sensitivity in low-light conditions. Instead, the FUJICA ST701 became one of the first cameras to feature a silicon photodiode, which was excellent at determining the right exposure at any light level, including in the dark. This new method of light metering made it more convenient than ever to take quick snapshots in a wide variety of conditions.
With its outstanding lens and compact body, the FUJICA ST701 sold well not only in Japan but also in Europe and the US. Its success further contributed to the strong FUJICA brand that Fujifilm was building.

In response, Fujifilm launched the FUJICA G690 medium format camera in 1968. This interchangeable lens camera used 120 film with a frame size of 6 x 9 cm, had a lens shutter mechanism, and range-finding focusing mechanism. Moreover, the FUJICA G690 was maneuverable and could take photos quickly, making it ideal for snapshots, yet it also rivaled large-format cameras in terms of image quality. Photography studios began adopting the new camera, as well as pros and advanced amateurs working outside the studio. At Expo â70 in Osaka, it was used extensively by visiting groups for their commemorative photos.
In 1973, Fujifilm launched the FUJICA GL690, which offered the same medium format photos with the portability and usability of a 35 mm SLR. Then, in 1978, the company launched the FUJICA GW690 Professional. With an even lower weight and even higher functionality, this model continued the success of the series with pros and amateurs alike.
In 2003, the medium format series that began with the FUJICA G690 finally came to an end. These cameras go down in Fujifilm history as popular, long-selling models that made a real difference to people in their 35-year run.

Developing Japanâs first presensitized plates for printing
In the 1960s, Japan was experiencing rapid economic growth, and the demand for printed materials increased accordingly. During this period, the offset method of printing grew in prominence, as it produced beautiful results and was excellent for printing in color.
Already working on photographic film for use in printmaking, Fujifilm saw the opportunity to develop plates for use in offset printing. At the time, printers would spread photosensitive solution on metal plates, but it proved difficult to achieve consistent results over time.
One solution to this problem was presensitized plates, which came coated with photosensitive material. Market research indicated that there was significant demand for these plates in Japan, which were then being imported at high costs. Fujifilm began R&D and in 1965 launched its first presensitized plates.
Offset printing for color applications continued to grow in popularity. Pushing forward with R&D to increase plate durability, Fujifilm succeeded in using electricity to oxidize the plates, making the surface more wear-resistant. In 1969, Fujifilm launched the GAN presensitized plate, followed by GAP392 in 1971. These innovative plates produced beautiful transfers and stunning final results. In time, presensitized plates became the gold standard for final press runs, and Fujifilm has remained a major player in the growing global printing market ever since.

The birth of a revolutionary home movie system: Single-8!
Fujifilm launched its first 8 mm movie camera in 1960, but adoption of home movie cameras by consumers in Japan remained lowâonly about 2% in major cities. In order for the market to grow, an easy-to-use, virtually fail-proof home movie camera was needed. Fujifilm began considering the potential of film that was truly 8 mm in width, instead of 16 mm divided in two.
After producing a number of prototypes, Fujifilm presented its revolutionary new home movie system at a photography convention in 1965: Single-8, which consisted of movie film 8 mm wide pre-loaded in a magazine that snapped easily onto the camera. Winning universal praise for its ability to make home movie more accessible than ever, Single-8 further established Fujifilmâs name in the global marketplace.
In Japan, a TV commercial for Single-8 featured dialog that became all the rage: âA simple magazineâgreat! Now I can film too.â The product was soon in use in many a Japanese household, and exports to Europe and the US soon followed. In addition to providing Fujifilm with excellent sales revenue, Single-8 played another important role. By becoming a hit overseas, it highlighted the potential of overseas markets for Fujifilm, and the company further increased its efforts to become a strong presence in the global photography market.

Photographic film, of course, isnât a product that a person can open and try out before purchasing it. Thus, a photographerâs choice comes down to trust in the brand. The packaging of film is its âface,â doing its best to instill this trust, and Fujifilmâs packaging in the 1950s had room for improvement in this area. Selecting a key color could help clearly distinguish the companyâs offering from the competition. In addition, the packaging needed to distinguish effectively between color and monochrome films and clearly indicate its sensitivity and other important parameters. Therefore, any signature color had to harmonize well with colors signifying such differences and make film selection easier.
In the 1950s, having already achieved great success in Japan, Fujifilm was also looking to replicate this success overseas. To do so, Fujifilm needed a strong and distinctive image, and it extensively researched and considered various signature color candidates. The answer Fujifilm arrived at was green, for the following reasons:
1. Green has a bright, positive image. With its youthful feel, it was especially appropriate for Fujifilm at the time, as the company was growing and engaging in new initiatives. The vivid Fujifilm green also looked great in retail locations and proved to be effective in promoting sales.
2. Fujifilmâs market research indicated that green appealed to a large majority of people and was disliked by few. Importantly, green was considered a positive and attractive color in a large number of countries and cultures.
3. Further, green was considered to have the potential in global markets to give a creative impression and thereby help build a strong and appropriate brand image.
In updating its package designs, Fujifilm first used the new green on the exterior boxes of its 8mm and 16mm color film and performed further market research. Then, in the fall of 1958, Fujifilm began converting the packages of all its film products to green, starting with standard color film.
Thereafter, Fujifilm and the color green became increasingly connected in the minds of amateur and professional photographers, and this helped build a strong corporate image. Selecting and implementing this signature color proved to be one of the most successful marketing decisions in Fujifilm history.
