I see no difference
Why do I ship Sabriel?
I ship Sabriel because I sincerely love both of these characters and wish only the best for them. I ship Sabriel because both of them need family â not just a family by blood, not just a âit sort of happenedâ family, but a family that was chosen knowingly and on their own. I ship Sabriel because I believe that they could build a relationship which would make each of them feel better than when they were alone.
Both of them are painfully addicted to their families. Both of them have tried to run away from their families and concomitant responsibility. But both of them have found the strength to come back. I ship them because they understand each other well because of this.
Sam is very attached to his brother. Gabriel seems to me as the one who could accept it (in fact, already did in a âMystery spotâ) and not to make Sam choose between them. I ship Sabriel because their relationship could fit into the Winchestersâ life without severing the brotherly ties.
Gabriel openly spoke of liking for Dean. Dean openly spoke of understanding Gabriel. I ship Sabriel because Gabriel can become a part of the family.
Sam is a hunter who has lost a lot of people he loved. Gabriel is one of the few people who donât need to be worried about all the time â at least, worrying too much, as he is himself a part of the supernatural world. I ship them because their relationship is possible in the Winchestersâ universe.
I ship them because of the way they looked at each other when they first met. I ship them for consistently keeping each other emotional. I ship them because they couldnât stay indifferent to each other from the very beginning.
I saw how Gabriel tortured Sam in the âMystery spotâ. I saw how he stopped because Sam asked him to. I saw how much Samâs attitude to Dean has changed after that. I ship Sabriel because they can influence each other.
I saw Gabriel leaving Sam because he thought it was right. I saw Sam leaving Gabriel because he thought it was right. I ship them because they still remain their true selves when interacting.
Gabriel is as much of a âdeserterâ as Sam is a âheroâ. Gabriel is as much of an âegomaniacâ as Sam is a âmartyrâ. I ship them because in a best-case scenario together they can balance each other and find a middle ground.
Sam spoke about his faith in angels in 2x13 â and Gabriel appeared in 2x15. Sam spoke about losing his faith is 13x11 â and Gabriel appeared in 13x13. I ship them because Sam deserves a better support of his faith than vain prayers. I ship them because Gabriel can justify this faith.
Sam is almost incapable of having a good rest and Gabriel, apparently, of working. I ship them because their joint activities could be much more productive than when they work alone.
Lucifer. Asmodeus. Not just a torture, but a degrading torture. I ship Sabriel because both of them understand what itâs like and can help each other cope.
Both Sam and Gabriel took serious approach to permanent relationships and respected their partners. They both value their families equally. I ship Sabriel because I think that without this there could be no deep connection and long-term relationship.
I think that Gabriel is a lecher more often in words than in deeds and itâs the same with Sam being a prude. I ship them because I believe in a match of their sexualities on practice.
Sam and Gabriel have different temperaments. But I ship them because that wouldnât let them be bored with each other and because a high level of understanding wouldnât let it become a problem and because they hardly could spend so much time together that they would start annoying each other. I ship them because their interaction could be interesting but wouldnât exhaust them.
I ship them because they could get one dog for both of them.
I ship them because they, within their abilities, tried to protect each other.
I ship them because someone other than Dean could make Sam smile more.
I ship them because Sam can see (and already did that) something human behind Gabrielâs facade.
I ship them⊠Because of many more reasons. But there is one main thing.
I ship them because they belong together. Because I believe: they could love each other and could have their âhappy ever afterâ for a relatively long time.
Thatâs why.

I need you
That`s what Dean said to Castiel in 8x17 and thatâs what Sam said Gabriel in 13x18.Â
These words helped Cas and Gabe to recover. Between many shippers it is well settled that instead of âI need youâ in both cases Sam and Dean should have said âI love youâ. That these words would convey the meaning more accurately. And that itâs the only reason for these words to have such a strong effect on Castiel and Gabriel â what can wrest a wandering mind out of the dark if not love?
Earlier, when we were considering the Destiel case only, I used to agree, but after Samâs words I viewed these scenes from a different angle.
âI need youâ or âI love youâ?
It seems to me that one thing is overlooked here. Namely, that in both cases these words were said by the Winchesters. The ones with their complicated history. And they said those words to these specific people. Well, not people actually â beings! For them, Supreme Beings â an angel and an archangel respectively.
It is in fact an important refinement.
Both Sam and Dean, despite their heroic history, sincerely believe that completely everything whatâs happening is some kind of a terrible mistake. That they are unworthy of a heroic title. That they are too weak, and moreover guilty of most tragedies happened (hard even to argue with that), so it would be better if somebody else saved the world. Ideally, someone more powerful and mightier. They actually have repeatedly cried for the Supreme, in their understanding, beings to shift the responsibility of the world. In eleventh season brothers came to the God himself, but even he didnât deem it necessary to relieve them of this unbearable burden. So they had to put up with that.
Nevertheless, brothers have kept the faith in Supreme Beings. Well, this faith is no longer about all angels and all gods. To the point of the latest seasons this faith is a piece-good.
Dean believes in one and only angel â Castiel, his friend, companion, brother, as you like. And apart from personal stuff, Dean still sees in Castiel something so pure and light that he considers it absolutely unreachable for himself.
In Samâs case the faith was initially very strong. He has believed in angels and in God since childhood, he wasnât as skeptical as Dean about this. And it makes being disappointed over and over again even more painful. But there was someone who did justify Samâs faith. Yes, exactly, it was Gabriel. Sam managed to get trough him once and Sam most likely remembered him as a hero.
If brothers see that these beings fight with them and stand with them (or in Samâs case â just remember that there was a certain archangel on their side), thereâs still hope. But when they see that the ones in whom they believe, the ones in whom they see a better, a worthy, a strong element, betray themselves â Sam and Dean cannot bear it.
Dean said âI need youâ not in a âI need you to stop beating me and start kissing meâ way. He didnât actually seem to care about himself that time. He was worried about Castiel and what was inside his heart and soul. He said it because he needed Castiel as he was â as a strong, true angel of a high moral who wouldnât beat someone to blood. He needed Castiel because he needed to believe in something bigger that he is himself and because he simply could not see how his last pillar of faith is falling. After all, if Castiel cannot cope, how can a worthless and weak Dean do that?
In destiel case itâs easy to confuse recognition of the need with a love confession, because Dean needs Castiel not just as Castiel himself, but also as a source of his faith â of course, Dean as well means being together, dealing with their problems side by side, drinking beer in a bar and watching Scooby-Doo at the TV. Castiel is close to Dean in many ways.
Itâs quite different with Sam. Gabriel and Sam donât have such an affinity as Cas and Dean, thatâs why itâs easier to separate the personal from the faith aspect. And it has always been easier for Sam to admit this need and it didnât even take someone choking with blood. Sam in general has always been more honest with himself than Dean. But thereâs one thing in common between them â he couldnât bear seeing his ideal being broken. In his case the âI need youâ phrase seems nothing like âI love youâ and may be even absurd a bit: why do you need that archangel? He has just been brought to the bunker; from where does this need even come and why is that exactly your need? But his âI need youâ is excellently supplemented with the unspoken âI need to see you as you were, to see you strong. Because if youâre broken, I am even more soâ.
So yeah, now I donât think that âI need youâ is a Winchester way to say âI love youâ. For brothers this need of a pillar of faith is strong and deep but itâs not the same as love. They have loved many people, but itâs these beings who they need to carry their burden. It is quite a selfish feeling â it stands far from the ideal of light, warm, selfless feeling of love and affection. Well, one does not interfere with one another. But in these scenes itâs not love on the first place.
By the way, on the other side, for Castiel and Gabriel, things are clearer and simpler. Though the fandom doesnât really pay attention to this.
Both Castiel and Gabriel come to themselves because they understand what the brothers actually ask for and why. These words appeal to their conscience and reproach for their weakness. From their point of view everything is different: if The Winchesters © that they admire (Gabriel hides that well enough but it can be seen clearly on Cas) stoop to begging, things are really shitty. And pleading reach the goal â in this meaning Gabriel and Castiel got really stuck in love for the Winchesters because when they go down to begging so humanly, when they admit that they will not cope alone, neither of Gabriel and Castiel can remain indifferent. And overcome themselves for the boys.
And thatâs what cannot be named otherwise but love â what is more, itâs deepest and purest kind. Sincere love makes people become better and overcome their flaws and weaknesses and thatâs what we see in Gabriel and Castiel.
