Air quality data for two cities, Vancouver in the left channel, Edmonton in the right, is sonified using a mix of FM and Granular synthesis. This exerpt includes hourly data from January and February 2014.
Data Streams: Carbon Monoxide = low carrier frequency Ozone = medlow carrier frequency Sulphur Dioxide = medhigh carrier frequency Nitrogen Dioxide = high carrier frequency Particulate Matter 2.5 micrometers = granular 'clicks' (this is the deadliest)
The amount of pollutants in the air is mapped to the modulation index of each FM stream. In short, the more pollution there is, the noisier the sound becomes overall.

What if you could hear a wireless signal?
Streams of wireless data surge from internet exchanges and cellphone relays, flowing from routers to our devices and back again. This saturation of data has become a ubiquitous part of modern life, yet it is completely invisible to us. What would it mean to develop an additional sense which makes us continuously attuned to the invisible data topographies that pervade the city streets?
Phantom Terrains is an experimental platform which aims to answer this question by translating the characteristics of wireless networks into sound. By streaming this signal to a pair of hearing aids, the listener is able to hear the changing landscapes of data that surround them. Network identifiers, data rates and encryption modes are translated into sonic parameters, with familiar networks becoming recognizable by their auditory representations.
The project challenges the notion of assistive hearing technology as a prosthetic, re-imagining it as an enhancement that can surpass the ability of normal human hearing. By using an audio interface to communicate data feeds rather than a visual one, Phantom Terrains explores hearing as a platform for augmented reality that can immerse us in continuous, dynamic streams of data.

I’m building software that composes and synthesizes music based on the realtime locations of the trains in Boston, MA. There’s a detailed description below. I’ve been working on this project for months, and it’s at the point where I spend several minutes at a time simply listening to it, to determine what the next step is. Because of this, I figured I could take the opportunity to record it, and share my progress with anyone that is interested. I’ll be making more of these videos as the project progresses further. Simple: Blue Line - Percussion Green Line - Chords Orange Line - Melody/Motifs Red Line - Bass Global - Tempo,KickDrum Detailed Explanation: I have been working to develop a system that musically sonifies the locations of the MBTA train system in real time. The system is comprised of two parts. The first is a command line application written in Java. It parses the real time feed provided by the MBTA, and references it to a set of static files also provided by the MBTA, to create useful data. This data is then written into JSON and exported as a file. The second half of the system is written in Max/MSP. It references the JSON file as it gets updated, and uses the data to synthesize and compose a piece of music in real time. I have delegated roles to each of the lines. The blue line trains play percussion and rhythms determined by trains’ locations. The green line generates chords determined by the train’s locations. The orange line creates motifs based on the green line’s chords using the locations of the orange line trains as controls for the composition of the motif. The red line synthesizes a bass line using the locations of the trains as references to particular beats within a loop as well as the note to be played by the bass. The number of trains running has an effect on the tempo of the piece, and the number of trains located at connecting stations(Park Street, State Street, Downtown Crossing, etc.) determine whether or not the kick drum is active. A single simulated event in which the Higgs Boson is produced with a pair of top quarks. The high frequencies represent the energy deposit distance from proton-proton interaction point in mm. The low frequencies represent energy deposited in MeV.
