Mermay Day 2: Warrior 🐠 Underrated Disney Princess Kida 💎
Kida if she were in Wreck It Ralph 2
(like she deserves…!)
Some genderbend of Disney Princesses
Kida!!!
Kida was not an easy heroine to redesign. Because Disney created Atlantis (the one we explore/meet with the characters, not the original myth), so there isn’t an “accurate version” to compare them to. But I love Kida & so do so many of you! (She was very requested & it put it off for a bit bc we’re making some stuff up about a made-up civilization & that makes me nervous).
Anyway, I did some research into the original myth & I watched the entire ‘Making Of’ Documentary for Atlantis because I wanted to get as much as I could about the production & animator’s ideas while creating & designing Atlantis. One of the first things they really touch on (relevant to this & not their trips to antique military facilities or spelunking) was the origin of Atlantis. Atlantis being something that Plato said happened but there aren’t necessarily secondary sources. Because of that most theories about Atlantis place it (not surprisingly) in or around/near to the Mediterranean. One of the most famous theories is that he’s referencing the volcanic eruption of Thera (Santorini) that devastated the Minoan civilization both on the island & the coastal settlements on Crete that were potentially hit with a tsunami.
Disney however shot down the idea of a Greek/Mediterranean Atlantis really quickly. To them it was too “Fishbowl”/kitsch & they shut down all greek-column-style-ruins. Instead they opted for a (this is where the 90s/early 2000s iffy depictions for non-western civilizations come in - it’s not as bad as say El Dorado but…) “Mother Civilization/Continent” that inspired/was inspired by… cherrypicking various ancient civilizations all over the world. We’ll get more into that as this goes on (there are a lot of opinions, but Kida deserves the love) - but I wanted to start at the beginning. A fantasy-Grecian inspired outfit for Kida.
This design is based more or less on a chiton-like garment with a skirt underneath. It allows for fluid mobility & is “believable” for an ancient civilization in terms of fabric/technology for fabric. We also have some jewelry, most importantly her gem-necklace.

Kida’s third design!
One of the major inspirations for Disney’s Atlantis the Lost Empire was Angkor Watt. It’s a beautiful, ancient series of ruins with a commanding/awesome (inspiring awe… it feels weird to use that word properly) presence and a wonderfully unique silhouette…. that the artists cited in the documentary as one of their main architectural inspirations. The water, the tropical overgrowth (get it cuz it’s overgrown), and the tall-dome shapes.
I’m not sure there’s a reason for using Angkor Watt for their designs other than the aesthetic? Supposedly this is happening on a lost continent submerged/swallowed by the Atlantic Ocean…. so I don’t know how the Khmer dynasty connects? Not to mention the Khmer Empire & Angor period are hundreds of years (depending on when easily over a millennia) too late to be included in the pre-sinking of Atlantis. But it is a concept that the canon-movie rolled with AND I have a suspicion that they also used some of the Khmer fashion to loosely inspire some of the Atlantean fashion choices. Especially with the sharp shoulders on some of the fancier robes.
What I did… was an odd combination of Kida’s movie costume and clothing inspired by Khmer fashion. With so much already inspired by Khmer culture it would be odd not to explore Kida in a Khmer-inspired fashion even if it is “too late” time wise to be relevant to the sinking of Atlantis. (This is where we’re back at that “Mother Civilization” that just uses whatever is visually inspiring & claims it ‘was done there first’ to explain everything with some handwaving. Which, sure… but I don’t think they asked anybody in Cambodia if using Angor Watt was acceptable…)
So what we have here is a skirt with a “belt” of fabric that falls into pleats. But it is a lot shorter than most of the historical skirts (and isn’t tied the same way but that’s why this is inspired & not “Historical”). Her in-movie top is technically included though in the Khmer Empire or Angkor period it would be more historical for her to be topless. But that wouldn’t fly in a disney movie, so we’re decorating her existing clothing instead with the over-one shoulder drapery. (I would call it by it’s real name & it’s worn a lot in traditional dance performances with the pleated skirt but my brain must be too mushy today to visualize the lists of descriptions of traditional clothing names… because apparently having pictures to describe would be too easy. I think it’s called chong pok style, but quote me on nothing because the words are swimming.)
Thus a very fictionalized Khmer-fashion-inspired outfit to pay homage to the original movie inspiration, Angor Watt.

And the last Kida design!!
This one was really fun to design… mostly because it is the great combination of the inspirations & imagination. Incorporating the belt & pleated sash from the Khmer design with the blocky & double-skirt effect of the Aztec design with the greek clasps at the shoulder with modern crop-top styles that have been so popular.
It was just fun to create. And sneak in more geometric patterns.
It probably wouldn’t be able to satisfy Kida’s range of movement in the movie but I like how it turned out anyway.

Part 2
Day 4 of #dapptertober feat. Princess Kida from "Atlantis: The Lost Empire"!
This.
There can’t be too many reminders of this.
Hear, hear.
this article said everything out loud that I feel and stuff down when my salaried 9-5 friends talk about 4-day weeks or how universal remote work has changed their lives
maximizing productivity is good with guaranteed pay! it gives leisure time! but when you're paid hourly it just makes your life worse!!! and here's why we should have universal basic inco-
last excerpt I promise but YEAH!!! acknowledge that different types of workers have different needs!!!! idk I get rly nervous reading 4 day work week articles and opinions bc so many people frame it as a final battle of sorts and like. you gotta get the 4 day work week and then you gotta start getting hourly workers guaranteed benefits and less volatile scheduling like....
Hourly workers need benefits and regular scheduling and an end to lean staffing BEFORE white collar workers need a fucking four day week
LET THEM KNOW!!! LET LIL BOYS KNOW.
people are so weird about self insert ocs actually. like why wouldn't you want a made up little guy who's like you except cooler and they get to live all your fantasies? what are you afraid of? having fun? free yourself
people will really try to tell you "self insert ocs are cringe" like okay then. when you play a first person pov video game with character customization options do you not style them at least a little bit to reflect yourself as the player? have you never thought about what an ideal version of you with no restrictions would look and act like? do you never imagine yourself in situations? open your eyes
"self insert ocs are cringe" lol i'm hanging out with all my favorite characters in my mind and we aren't even talking about you
