Naturally we weren't terribly interested in going along with their little war game when the rest of the galaxy finally woke up. As retribution, they might as well have blasted the crust clean off—hectare for hectare, Mars has the bitter honour of being home to the most number of undetonated munitions known from the war of any world in the modern Terran Federation.

Concepts for Mars, and the Martian Commune from 2019 to 2021. Commentary below.

Working with a sci-fi universe yet critical of the way space exploration has been consumed by gaudy techbro culture, I try to find ways to reverse the commentary, challenge those preconceptions, or at the very least distance myself from that side of scifi.

Enter Light Era Mars: not a prospective world, not a glory story, but a cautionary tale whose landscape is littered with the remnants of colonisation. It was the centre of terran space development and colonisation, at least until the invention of the hyperspace drive.

Colonisers and corporations abandoned Mars as quickly as they came for new frontiers and profits—leaving its population behind, and with no obligation to help them. Countless years of being the backwater of the galaxy bittered the Martial spirit. The Martian Commune is deeply red and anarchist as a result, and are distrustful of "help" especially from SocDems. Quite inconvenient, especially as Earth, the centre of SocDemism, is right next door.
