Instead, the focus seems to be on tailoring the company’s magazine properties around the digital consumer. Driving that plan is a trove of research that breaks down readers’ daily news cycle. The “Arc of the Day” study showed that in the morning readers want bite-size headlines and news flashes. In the afternoon, they are often at a desktop computer and want to grab a slide show or video, and at night they have time to engage in a deeper article. A related study also found that the average smartphone owner spends 1.4 hours a day waiting in line while browsing a device.

Benchmark Synthesis
Hotelier Pure Players (Booking, Hotels.com etc.) are the most successful, having a complete and easy to use search tool, enabling customers to be guided and informed during the entire booking process. Finally, their multi channel approach (social networks and mobile applications) is the most accomplished, which strengthen customers' loyalty. These advantages make Pure Players extremely competitive in the accommodation market.
Hotel Chains have to get out of a descriptive pattern, only focusing on the product. As a result, they have to make efforts to make web users' search easier, by guiding them in their choice in a more precise way (customer comments addition and increase of refining criteria especially on the search results page).
To finish with, Tour Operators seem to have to fill out their online channels in order to make the offers purchase easier and more practical.

Orbitz Shows Mac Users Pricier Results Than PC Users [REPORT]
by Todd Wasserman
Orbitz’s data found that Mac users spend 30% more on hotel rooms, so the company is starting to show them more expensive rooms, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Research showed that Mac users spent $20 to $30 more per night on hotel rooms than PC owners. Mac users were also 40% more likely to book a four or five-star hotel.
Testing the data, The WSJ found a Mac search for a hotel in Miami Beach for two nights in July showed pricier hotels on the first page of results. “Overall, hotels on the first page of the Mac search were about 11% more expensive than they were on the PC,” the article states.
The average household income for a Mac user is $98,560 compared to $74,452 for a PC user, according to Forrester.

Trends shaping the hotel industry, according to Ron Pohl & Ken Minnikin
Ron Pohl is senior VP of brand management and member services for Phoenix-based Best Western International.
Ken Minnikin is director of marketing for Australia-based Mantra Group.
- "Approximately 20% of all travel was booked on mobile devices during 2011; two years ago that number was nearly zero. Within the next three years, 80% of all bookings will be made via mobile devices."
- “Consumers are utilizing new technology such as mobile/cell phones and tablets, to conduct research and to make accommodation bookings. And even more interesting is when they are undertaking this activity.” For example, activity is peaking at 11 p.m. local time in Australia"
- "We have become an industry that is much more science than art”
- "Guests today, especially road warriors, want rooms that remind them of home (…) That can be reflected both in the design aesthetic as well as amenities and technology."
- “Customers like the inn feel or the expanded bed-and-breakfast feel. There’s not many brands or chains that are affiliated with those types of products. It’s an opportunity to take smaller hotels (of 30 to 50 rooms) and place them in a market with a brand name.”
