Samaritan | December 20th ‘79 | Alastor & Fabian
(head-auror-moody):
By now, Alastor was somewhat used to Fabian’s playful attitude. However, the Auror still couldn’t quite understand the man. “My personal life, Prewett, is no one else’s business besides mine. But, I will keep your words in mind, thanks.” Being a fairly private man, Alastor preferred to keep his personal details and life to himself. Hell, if no one thought he had a private life, then he was fine with that. Answering Fabian’s question for himself, it had been a while since he’d gone out with anyone that hadn’t to do with work.
He hadn’t been paying much attention to the restaurants, as he wanted Fabian to decide - the man was probably the most hungry between the two of them, he figured, judging by the man’s appearance earlier. So, when Fabian found a restaurant and went in, Alastor followed. The warmth of the restaurant was very welcome. The smell of food wafted from the kitchen and made his stomach growl. The place looked nice enough, and he wasn’t particularly picky when it came to food (so long as no one was trying to poison him, of course).
Nodding, he answered, “Yeah, this looks good.” Thai food wasn’t something he ate very often. In fact, he could probably count on one hand how many times he’d eaten at a Thai restaurant. He followed the hostess to a table. Pulling off his overcoat and scarf and draping them over the back of his chair, Alastor sat down. The woman handed him a menu, of which he looked at briefly before setting it down. He didn’t know what things were, but he did know that Asian restaurants always seemed to have tea. “Could we get a pot of tea,” he asked the woman, who nodded and quickly disappeared. Having something hot would help them warm up.
Alastor looked up at Fabian, “I’m not familiar with Thai food. Anything you suggest that would be good?”
Fabian watched Alastor take his coat and scarf off, and went to remove his own before remembering that he’d forgotten them. Instead, he just sat down, tucking himself in close to the table, feeling a lot more steady now he was on four legs again.
Fabian watched like an excited 5-year-old as Moody ordered tea for them. Fabian, like any respectable Englishman, would never say no to a cup of tea, but he hoped maybe there would be some alcohol to follow.
He scanned over his menu, but his vision swirled when he tried to focus, which only made him try to focus more. It seemed to take him hours just to read the first item on the menu. Just to add to his struggles, there were a lot of words he didn’t know here. Anything you suggest that would be good? Oh dear, it appeared they were both clueless.
“Ummm,” He elongated, trying to make out a few more words on the menu. “To be perfectly honest Alastor, I’ve not got a bloody clue. But it smells really good doesn’t it?” He whispered loudly, but smiling quite happily, just content with the prospect that he would soon be eating. “Perhaps we should ask the lady.”
The woman came back with the tray of tea. Fabian beamed up at her as she placed it on their table. “Hello, me and my companion here were wondering if perchance you might be able to recommend some dishes for us.” The woman seemed more than willing, pointing out a few items on the menu and explaining them. Fabian nodded hungrily at one when pork and rice was mentioned. “Yes, I think I’ll have that one please.” He grinned at her.
True Colors // Christopher & Fabian // January, 1980.
(cherrybomb-witch):
“Ro does that too” maybe if he wasn’t under so much stress, Chris would have smiled “He befriends anyone willing enough. He could probably befriend a rock if they reacted to him at all. People just….tend to like him. He’s a likeable bloke”.
His light eyes went down, however, when Fabian asked where his twin was now. Not being able to see his brother managed to upset nearly as much as what he’d just been through. Rowan would have made everything so much easier. No need for excuse, for making up stories of why exactly he was so anxious. Rowan would have kept his other family members from asking questions and would have dealt with Christopher himself because there was no one better for it.
“Rowie is staying at his best friend’s place. He’s been grounded for a month and this is the first time he gets to go out. For him that’s a big deal. I don’t want to bother him” he muttered, staring at his shoes once more.
Marlene came back then, and motioned for Fabian to come closer. Christopher ignored them, still too caught up in his own misery to care much about what his sister might want to say to her friend.
The blonde witch dragged her friend to the kitchen and leaned forward to speak in a hushed tone.
“Fab, I think I might have an idea of what happened to him” she said, her tone very serious and concerned. She and Christopher weren’t the closest, but that did not mean she didn’t care deeply for her little brother “It’s just that something about what he said when he arrived. He said ‘They saw me. With Him’. So it got me thinking…”
She debated on whether if revealing what she was about to say would be wise, since she wasn’t even supposed to know herself. But she just couldn’t stand seeing Christopher like that, so upset. And if there was someone who wouldn’t judge him at least, that was Fabian.
“Christopher is gay” she finally admitted, her tone very quiet because she didn’t want her brother to know they were talking about him “I accidentally overheard him talking to his twin about it a couple of summers ago. He doesn’t know I know and I don’t think anybody else knows about it either, except for Rowan. I might be mistaken, but based on what he just said, I think that whatever happened to him might be connected to this”.
She bit her bottom lip, crossing her arms over her chest and balancing her weight from heel to toes “I know it’s none of your business, and maybe I shouldn’t be asking this but…I thought…maybe…there was something you could do? I mean, I know you don’t even know him, and Christopher is not the most open person on the planet. But I think he might open up to someone who has a better understanding of his situation, you know? Someone from the inside, instead of me.I’d love to help him, but I can’t fully identify with what he’s going through and we are not that close either. Please, Fab, I really hate to ask, but I just can’t see him like this and Rowie can’t be here right now. Is there something you might do to help him?”
If Fabian knew anything about being a twin it was that Rowan would probably be here in a heartbeat if Christopher asked it, but also, that Christopher would never ask. He nodded in understanding, hoping he and Marlene would be enough to cheer Chris up.
He was a little surprised when Marlene dragged him into the kitchen, thinking at first that he had done something wrong, but looking at Marlene’s face she looked more worried than angry.
“What do you think happened?” He asked concerned. Christopher was still practically a stranger to him, but Marlene meant the world to him and this was her brother and she was clearly upset by the turn of events. Besides, Christopher seemed like a nice bloke, if Fabian could do anything to help, he would.
At the revelation of Chris’ sexuality, Fabian started to piece things together and mild concern very quickly turned to outright rage. “You think someone targeted him? Because he’s gay?” He said, still trying to keep his voice down. If Marlene hadn’t asked him to stay and help, he probably would have been out the door in a second hunting for the assholes.
Honestly it touched him that Marlene would even trust him with something like this and he calmed himself down slightly. “Well I can certainly try, you know, I- I don’t know how much good I’ll do, but I can have a go.” Hopefully he couldn’t traumatise the boy more.
Fabian hesitated in the doorway for a second, oddly feeling more awkward now. “How do I start?” He turned back to Marlene for help. you couldn’t just walk into a room and shout ‘I’m going to help you because I too like men in a very gay way’.
Princesses, Peas and (Im)Perfect Snogging || Marlene & Fabian || Jan. 12th, 1080.
(cherrybomb-witch):
Marlene buried her face in Fabian’s shoulder so as to muffle her four-year-old like giggles. That was one of the reasons of why she enjoyed Fab’s company so much, that ability he had of laughing at himself. It was refreshing and easy-going, a comfortable response to Marlene’s sarcastic remarks. He was just easy to joke around with, without fear of offending each other.
“Mhhm he must be your lost twin. Well, it’s clear who got the looks in the family” she carried on, obviously just teasing. Not only because Fabian was actually very handsome, but also because he and his twin looked so much alike, it was illogical so say one was better looking than the other. If it wasn’t because they differed in style, Marlene probably wouldn’t have been able to tell Fabian from Gideon during the Order meetings.
At the mention of a stripper club, her eyes, blue in the night light, twinkled mischievously, and a wide, wicked grin spread over her features. She wiggled her eyebrows suggestively at Fabian and laughed.
“As long as I can get filthy drunk and there are pretty men to stare at, count me in” she winked playfully at her friend, lifting one shoulder and bagging her eyelashes. Others might have seen the gesture as flirtatious, but with Fabian that was never the case. It was all pretend, a real joke for them. It was quite a unique friendship, strictly platonic and fraternal.
“Thank Merlin I decided to bring some money with me then. I can’t think of a better way to spend it than throwing it at pretty men and women while they get naked”.
Just as Fabian had claimed, the bar was only a few blocks away, and since it was still quite early, they didn’t have to make much queue before a menacing looking bouncer let them in.
Inside, the club’s atmosphere turned out to be quite exotic, probably inspired by the 1920′s cabarets. The walls were a rich, dark red, and the artificial lights that shone at strategic points so as to keep enough shadow to preserve the air of mystery, were inspired by old chandeliers. Dancers moved around black stages, dressed in modern corsets and bowties, their clothes flashing under the lights. The music playing at the moment was jazz, and there seemed to be a main number at the center of the stage starring a couple of dancers that seemed to be recreating the Phantom of the Opera’s “Pass the Point of No Return” but in a much more sexual way that made Marlene laugh and point them to Fabian as if they were attending a circus act.
They took a table close to the stage at Marlene’s insistence. She didn’t want to miss the main show, after all. As they waited for someone to hand them the menu over, Marlene leaned towards Fabian with a conspiratorial smirk.
“First five cutest people you can see, not counting the dancers. Go!” she snapped her fingers. They always did this, discussing over who they found good-looking everywhere they went.
Just as Fabian had expected, Marlene was thrilled by the idea. “Well just as long as I’m allowed to get drunk and stare at the pretty men with you.” He teased in return to the flirtatious eyelid batting.
The club was certainly not a seedy little back alley joint where unsatisfied fat old men went to escape their unsatisfied fat old wives. This was an establishment of class, and every step further into the building made Fabian glad of his brain wave. Obviously, the dancers were stunning, but the club itself just felt like a very cool place to be, and when they took a seat Fabian felt a rush of excitement. Things were never boring when he spent the evening with Marlene, and in a place like this, the possibilities seemed endless.
He was glancing over the menu when Marlene stated her challenge, and of course Fabian rose to it. He flashed Marlene a grin before looking around at the other patrons and staff. “Hmmm,” He contemplated exaggeratedly. “Well, there is a lot of variety tonight, at first glance, blue suit over by the bar, green dress red hair over in the corner with that hen party, I hope she’s not the bride to be,” He chuckled with a careless shrug. “Hmm, the pianist has a certain charm about him, and that waitress.” He looked around for a fifth option but came up dry, a mischevious grin spread across his face. “And of course, you, my dearest darling, no one in the world could match your beauty.”
Fabian shrugged off his coat and made himself comfortable in his seat. “Okay, your turn, shoot!” He returned the game, watching her eyes to see who she’d pick. They really were spoilt for choice tonight, even excluding the dancers, so many of the patrons seemed prettier in the vintage atmosphere of the club.
“I think I saw grey suit checking you out as we walked in, if it makes a difference.” He teased, fiddling with the pile of napkins on the table. “Although you know we’re never going to get anywhere with anyone if everyone thinks we’re a couple.” He sighed. “Perhaps that’s a problem, perhaps this is why we seem eternally cursed.”
True Colors // Christopher & Fabian // January, 1980.
(cherrybomb-witch):
He shrugged off as Fabian explained his and Marlene’s friendship. It didn’t really matter much to Chris. His older sister had always been hard to figure out in his opinion.
At the mention of the word “twin” Christopher’s entire body position changed. He sat up a little bit straighter, turning to face the other man properly and seeing him in a completely different way. He immediately felt a wave of recognition and understanding with him. He was one of those rare people that actually understood the most important aspect of Chris’s life.
“You are a twin? Me too!” he said, not exactly cheerfully, but a lot less anxious than before “Rowan is that typical happy-go-lucky bloke that brings the soul of the party wherever he goes. He parties hard, laughs loudly and never settles for anything. And he is the biggest social jerk you’ll ever meet, he is always surrounded by people. But he’s that kind of guy that parties and has a jolly good time until he turns 25, meets the love of his life, get married and probably continues the McKinnon tradition of breeding in large numbers. Then he and his wife will probably build a small apartment above their garage where I can settle down because I….am not the marrying type”.
Because he would rather die alone than become one of those bitter men who married a woman and built an entire family based on a lie.
“Rowan has had some panic attacks, but not many and very rarely. Normally he just calms himself down by watching stupid muggle cartoons. He always ends up laughing his arse off”.
Talking about his twin was something Chris could do easily. Everybody liked Rowan; they just wanted to hear all about him. The happy, popular twin. He had that effect on people. And Christopher was all too happy to talk about him. It diverted the attention from himself, and he always had something to say. Not to mention, the mere thought of his twin always managed to bring even the smallest of smiles to his face, no matter how upset he might have been.
Perhaps talking about his twin was what made him feel calmer.
At first Fabian found Chris’ sudden transformation on the word ‘twin’ strange. Some people had a weird fetish thing about it, but he doubted that was Chris’ reason. When he explained that he too was a twin, it all made a lot more sense.
Fabian could see the change in his eyes when he started talking about Rowan. Once upon a time Fabian had talked about Gid like that at the drop of a hat. He let Chris talk, this was obviously helping him, and honestly it was nice to see such innocent happiness these days.
“He sounds like my kind of guy, except I’ll be the one with the granny flat above Gid’s garage.” A brief thought for his ex-fiancée entered his mind and he brushed it away. “I’m not the marrying type either. Except Gid’s more sparing about who he gives his affection to. Me, I’ll go with anybody that’s willing, no shame whatsoever, but Gid… You know, most of the time our relationship feels completely normal, and then sometimes I take a step back, and I realise what a privilege it is to be that close to him, to be someone he wants that close.” Fabian had drifted off into his own thoughts and quickly snapped his attention back to Chris. “Where’s Rowan right now?” He asked, thinking if anything would help this boy, his twin’s presence certainly would.
First Defeat | November 26th ‘79 | Fabian & Bertha
shinyjorkins:
Bertha didn’t know what to say. There was a lot Fabian had said, but somehow only one thing stuck. Fiancé? For someone claiming to be highly skilled in gathering secrets about people she’d somehow missed that part. “I’m sure she made a mistake,” Bertha said slowly, voice void of emotion. “Though I can’t say I’m particularly sad. If she hadn’t we wouldn’t have met.” It didn’t matter that it sounded selfish. Fabian wouldn’t remember it in the morning anyway.
Fabian’s suggestive tone made her smile, mostly because the idea of them doing anything at this point was nothing but ridiculous. Still, his hands on her made her shiver. It was an immediate reaction at this point. Her legs spread wider to make room for his touch, but before his hands had managed to get too far she grabbed them to hold them still. “Down boy,” she told him, though the command was obvious.
As he tried to get up Bertha let go of his hand in favour of putting one on his chest, making him stay where he was. “I said down didn’t I?” She stared at the way her hand fit in his, contemplated what he wanted from her at that moment. With her free hand she supported her weight next to his head and gave Fabian a kiss on his forehead. “Stay,” she said firmly. Then she rolled off him and went to take off her clothes in favour of an old t-shirt that probably had been left behind by Fabian once.
She listened to him as she undressed, and his words were uncomfortable enough that she had to turn around. Not because he didn’t want them to be in love, that was the last thing on Bertha’s mind. But he trusted her, somehow, and for some unknown reason Bertha didn’t want to see the look on his face when he realised that she had been using him. “It’s not weird,” she replied quietly. “You just need someone to tell you what to do.” The fabric of her shirt was soft against her skin, and she pulled at the hem as she climbed into bed again. “Are you going to listen to me now then, when I tell you to sleep?”
“No, she made the right choice.” Fabian mused sleepily. Lizzie had been perfection, and he was... well he was sure he’d have enough self-hatred tomorrow to give himself a break right now.
The forceful hand on his chest holding him down would usually have been enough to get him raring to go. But at the moment he was too hazy to do anything but obey easily. Really all he wanted to do was obey at this point, he would have done anything Bertha told him to do, and maybe that was dangerous, but it was just so easy, and it felt so good.
He hummed contented as she told him to stay, and he didn’t move an inch, except to roll his head to the side to watch her as she undressed. There was a certain aspect of admiration in his gaze, because although Bertha was indeed extremely sexy, she was also exactly what he needed right now, and while there was no great passionate love between them, he trusted her.
Fabian felt safer with her back in the bed, and he instinctively curled into her. “I can try.” He obliged with a lazy smile as he closed his eyes. “But I’m not at all sleepy, I swear.” He said through a yawn. Then in a small voice, “would you play with my hair?” He felt himself sinking further into the mattress as sleep approached and he finally gave in to the potion.

cherrybomb-witch:
Chris jumped when Marlene’s friend spoke, his nerves on absolute edge. He hadn’t expected the guy to speak to him, he had no reason to and to be honest, Christ couldn’t blame him if he didn’t feel like talking to a panicking bloke he’d never seen before. He blinked up at him, surprised as the man went on about how to deal with panic attacks.
“Yeah, I’m Chris” he nodded shortly, far too accelerated to show some sort of politeness. Cruel laughter was still echoing in his ears, and all the comments…those words of disgust, of shame, of hatred. He just couldn’t shake them off.
“No-not really” he muttered, his leg still bouncing anxiously “Rowan says it’s because I’m as cold as a piece of rock but…but…but I just…I don’t allow myself to. But now…just…” he bit his tongue, knowing that in his state of panic, eh was capable of blurting out the whole truth to this stranger.
“I-I don’t know how…” he stammered.
“I do”.
Marlene was back from the kitchen, and handed him over a mug filled with hot tea that smelled very familiar.
“Mum’s recipe” Chris muttered, blowing on the liquid before taking a sip. It burned his tongue, but he felt a little bit calmer.
“I’m gonna send a message to Mum and Dad to let them know you’re staying here for the night” Marlene informed next, starting to walk towards her bedroom, where she’d left her wand “Don’t worry. No questions, just like you asked. Oh, this is Fabian, by the way”.
Fabian. Good. At least now he had a name to give the other man.
“So you…uuuuh…Marlene’s boyfriend or something?” he asked awkwardly after his sister had left. Now that he’d drank some of the tea, he was filling slightly calmer, at least enough to try and act normal, even though he knew he would fail at it “Who…who is this Gid you mentioned?”
Fabian was glad Marlene returned with the tea, it seemed to have an instant calming effect. It did smell good. Fabian wondered how it would taste with a splash of whiskey. It was also nice of Marlene to introduce him. He gave a small wave and a smile to the boy.
Fabian nearly fell off his chair when Chris asked if he was Marlene’s boyfriend. “Oh, nononoo. We’re just good friends. Ha, no, never. Marlene is not my type. We’re too messed up to be together. The universe would probably explode or something.” He grinned just thinking about the concept. Marlene had been one of those friends he hadn’t been looking for, and now would find it very difficult to live without.
The smile faltered a little at the mention of Gid. How did he explain who Gid was to him. “He’s my brother. My twin. We are-” were? “-very close. He’s the successful one, works under the minister, wears suits, earns lots of money, you know? He’ll probably be married soon with 2.5 children, and I’ll still be bumming around, smoking my days away at your sisters. But hey, at least I’m having fun right?” Fabian had decided to try and distract the boy from his anxiety by talking utter shit at him.
True Colors // Christopher & Fabian // January, 1980.
cherrybomb-witch:
He hadn’t known where else to go. Home was out of question. He just couldn’t handle being questioned about what had happened to him, and it wasn’t like he could tell anyone the bloody truth except for Rowan. But Ro wasn’t at home, he knew that. He was sleeping over at his best friend’s place and Chris didn’t want to bother him.
He shouldn’t have gone out. He’d thought it might be a good opportunity, considering Ro wasn’t available and it was Saturday night. He was still very shy about going out to bars alone, but he’d figured it was a good way to start. He’d never planned on ending up making out with the cute waiter that offered to buy him a drink. And he’d never imagined that of all the people in the bar, it would be one of his old roommates from Hogwarts that would walk inside with a bunch of other people Christopher knew right in time to see him making out with another guy.
The rest had been a nightmare.
Marlene’s place was the closest, and the only place he felt like he could show up to. He and his sister weren’t that close, but he knew that she would let him stay for the night if he asked, without questions. And maybe he wouldn’t feel all that comfortable but he would feel safe.
When she opened the door, he couldn’t help but blurt out like a bloody idiot.
“Mar, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to…I just need…Could I stay…Can I come in….I…” his breath quickened and he felt hot tears on his cheeks as he started to have a panic attack again. Shit “Please, Mar I just…I…Oh...”
Another man peeked over Marlene’s shoulder curiously, cutting off Christopher’s hysterical babbling. The younger boy hurried to dry off his tears, looking down at his shoes.
“Sorry, I…I didn’t know you had company” he should have left, but he just had nowhere else to go, and in his state of anxiety, he just couldn’t afford to think selflessly “Please, Mar, I need to come in. They saw me. With him. And I…and they…” he hadn’t been able to finish the sentence, because he’d broken down crying and his sister had hurried him into the flat.
So that was how he’d ended up seating on his sister’s couch, waiting for her while she prepared a cup of tea for him, and under the watchful eye of the older bloke that was with Marlene in her apartment.
Chris sniffed, bouncing his leg compulsively. He just couldn’t stop panicking.
Fabian and Marlene had just been having a lazy day together when the knock at the door had come. Fabian hadn’t been at all concerned until he’d heard the stuttered panicked voice, and then, of course, he’d had to investigate.
It was all very rushed and confusing, but most of all Fabian just wanted to help this poor boy out. A rushed hushed explanation from Marlene informed Fabian that this was Chris, her brother, and then she’d gone off to make tea.
Most people would have felt very uncomfortable in this situation, a panicking stranger sitting infront of them, and a very limited backstory, but ever-confident Fabian was in his element.
“Hey, you’re Chris right?” He broke the silence. First things first he had to calm this boy down, then they could get to the bottom of what had happened. “Have you ever had one of these before? A panic attack I mean?” Fabian had once or twice, and Gid had been prone to them at one point. That’s why he could identify it pretty well. “When I get them, I like to focus on something else, like... oh! Like muggles have these little number puzzles called sudokus. They help me. My brother, he just needed me to talk to him, I’d talk utter shit for ages until he’d calmed down.” He paused wondering if either of these would strike a chord with the boy. “We just need to find a way to take your mind off it.”
