I feel like it would be so much better, from every standpoint, if in the Mitsuba Arc, it was Shinpachi who was roped into entire thing instead of Gintoki. 

I’m always happy to think about any bonding between Shinpachi and Sougo so I might be biased, but in this case, Shinpachi is the one who would understand Sougo’s feelings on basically every level, and Sougo would KNOW that Shinpachi gets it. The big part of the story of the arc are emotional connections of Sougo’s - that he feels alienated, separate from the rest, alone. He’s not, as Kondou punches into him, but the message would ring just a little bit louder with Shinpachi there for him in the background. Shinpachi, who would GET the one part of Sougo that Kondou and Hijikata don’t - the bond with his sister and all that stems from it. 

Gintoki in this arc is a bit... tacked on, I feel. He has no stakes in the whole thing, other than that he’s a guy who likes to right the wrongs and who feels rather strongly for others. The whole thing would be, however, extremely personal to Shinpachi, who understands the pain of learning how to let your sister go and how hard it is to even think about, and who probably has nightmares with his sister getting hurt or dying. 

( Also, in my opinion, the scene in the cafe works so much better with Shinpachi. You are a young sadistic man who wants to convince your beloved sick sister that you’re doing well. Do you bring someone you know is a sadistic troll and who looks like a bum, or do you take someone maybe irritating and plain, but polite and well kept, who you can scare into never talking about the whole thing ever again? )
