âSo itâs not as bad as people say?â He asked, keeping his eyes on the road. Part of him felt like he was being rude by not looking at her, but the other part reminded him sheâd probably he rather keep her safe, than merely be polite. Nodding as she mentioned it being frustrating, it was something he couldnât argue with â not when heâd seen more than a few meltdowns when a bus broke down, and made someone late. âYou get used to it. Luckily someone normally offers you a lift if your bus just⌠Doesnât show.â
Relaxing a little when he realized he hadnât completely messed up, he smiled slightly at her answer. âSo a little bit of everything? Seems like the best way to do things, make sure you donât miss out.â Heâd always been of the mind that if you enjoyed something you should do it, even if it didnât get you anywhere. The fact she seemed to enjoy her job, just seemed like a bonus.
Shaking his head at the question, he gave a small shrug. âI was always pretty sure I was going to stay around here. It feel like home you know? It seemed a little daunting to leave somewhere that I loved, when I wasnât sure Iâd like wherever I moved to.â
As soon as he noticed her face fall, he almost wanted to apologise, before reminding himself that he hadnât actually done anything to apologise for â besides being the one who had to tell her the slightly bad news. âThe car needs a new part, that will probably take a few days to arrive. The good news, is that as soon as the part comes in, itâs not a hard problem to fix.â He answered, deciding it was best to get the good news out as quick as possible. âI can tow your car back to the garage, then show you to the townâs hotel? Unless you want to call someone to pick you up, and Iâll just get in contact once the repairâs done.â
âItâs not as bad as anyone says,â Gabby promised, leaning against her car as she spoke. She turned to face Steven, watching the slight movements of his body buried under the hood. âCity slickers are extremely dramatic. And definitely not that nice. Not that I donât have some friends that would help me out, but theyâre busy too.â
âYeah, thatâs a good way to look at it,â Gabby mused, interested by Stevenâs perspective. âWhen I was in school it was really...stressful because all the disciplines are required as intro classes, and youâre graded on skill even if you donât have any. But I got out alive, and I have new skills, so thatâs all that matters.â
Gabby nodded at Stevenâs answer, though more out of politeness than understanding. Sheâd always wanted to go. Home was never enough, and the daydreams were barely enough to sustain her lust for Anywhere Else. She couldnât imagine sticking in one place, certainly not the place she grew up in. She was almost...in awe. What was it like to feel so at home, you stayed forever? Gabby wasnât sure if sheâd ever have that, though.
But home was soon the least of her worries. Her eyes widened at the bad news, ready to lose herself in a frenzy at the news. She breathed a sigh of relief, however, when Steven said it wouldnât be a problem to get the part and finish fixing her car. âAll right, I guess thatâs not the worse,â Gabby said. âAnd, yeah, thatâd be great. Thanks for all your help, Steven.â She really did appreciate all the help from a stranger in a strange place.Â
