Davy Jones and Daydreams
Sixty-six sounded so old to me when I was that little starry-eyed 'tween' back in the day. Davy and Mickey and the other guys were flapping around, pretending to dance and play instruments. Hell, Davy couldn't even snap his fingers! But. Davy was Davy, and we sure did love that little guy! And now I know that sixty-six is far from old.
I was twelvish, turning thirteen, and I too had a captain's hat just like his. My fascination didn't last very long though. I did have real musical taste. The Beatles, the Stones, the Doors, The Mamas and the Papas...and this, of course, was just the start.
I came home one day, stomped up the front stairs in my red Dr. Scholl's. I had a couple of records in a bag and I was dying to pull them out and hear them play. My brother, though, was stretched out on the couch in the living room. He was watching and reading the evening news at the same time. My brother was a full ten years older than me, and he was the man of the house. And to me, he didn't seem like a brother...he seemed so, I don't know...old!
When I got to the top of the stairs, I plunked that baby right down. I turned up the volume and kicked the Scholls off my feet. Innocent. Really. I mean I'd taken the bus downtown to buy those few minutes of scratchy entertainment. Pure Davy blared, but the 'noise' and my dancing was apparently destroying the karma downstairs. My brother was a total Elvis/Bobby Darren fan. In reality, we may have been kids from the same gene pool, but musically, and culturally, we were at least an ocean apart. He knocked on the door and made me turn it all down.
A few years later, though, he was wishing for those charming little tunes. By that time I was a true teen with a driver's license and a job. And when I came home, I just loved to blare it all. Zepelin, Mountain, the Dead, the Stones and so, so many more. I'd long before shed my allegiance to the Monkees, I'd become a real rock and roll (and Motown) fan!
Dreaming My Own Dream
Children are often the mirror image of their parents. Girls of a certain age once grew up to follow their parents' imaginings of what they would become. Despite the fact that both my parents had died by the time I was eleven, I was still not immune to this all too present rule. For largely the first thirty-five years or so of my life, I was most happy to please, to smooth the waters, to avoid conflict at all cost. Married the Irish guy, raised three beautiful kids, took up the suburban life, followed that star.
Today, I do everything I can to see the truth instead. What really works for me? And most importantly...what works for others as well. Because now? It's not about me. I realize so much more.
Children, my own in particular, have to follow their own stars. No one is living that suburban life with me anymore, save my husband. My kids have flown the nest. They have wonderful places to visit and their dreams are greater than I could have imagined for them. Chicago, Boulder and Brooklyn! Today, I leave after a wonderful girls' weekend in Chicago...toes and nails, shopping, lots and lots of great eats.
It's a bleak day here. But things are as they should be. My daughter goes off to work, and I to will do the same tomorrow. We are both successful women! For we have not succumbed to the imaginings of others, but dreamed our own sweet dreams!
I have spent many years of my life in opposition, and I rather like the role. Eleanor Roosevelt
Unspoken Words
It never takes much to understand the heart of another human on this earth. The eyes truly are the windows to a whole 'nother universe. Today, with frigid northeast temps, and a crazy cold wind chill we chased a bright yellow school bus to the other side of a high school parking lot. We wanted one last chance to say goodbye. Who does this? Starry-eyed teenagers chasing rock stars. YES. Middle-aged people like me? I doubt it. But that is, in fact, what happened.
A crowd of well over 75 gathered to say goodbye to thirty students and ten teachers, our visitors this past week. Never did we expect to become so attached. But this week, we learned a valuable lesson in friendship...when time is dear, and you have only a spare bridge of communication to balance on, you make due. Language takes a backseat and the heart transcends it all.
If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other. Mother Teresa

Snow on the Hillside
Suffice it to say, that today was a day for celebration...the first, no really--the second big snowfall here in our New England home. Snow rendered us homebound, but that, for once is okay by me. Wheelchairs don't move very fast in the snow.
My husband has the wheels, I'm simply his back up, on the rare occasion in which he allows me the honor to push. He's stubborn and enthusiastic with energy often beyond mine!
We live in a beautifully spacious redesigned hunting lodge, a place that really is the home of our dreams. We didn't dream of wheelchairs, and we didn't dream of buying this house with three college tuitions to pay, but never the less, we always remembered to dream, and leave the outcome to the ever more powerful Universe.
So, today...I dream, I stare, I press my nose to the window. And as the sun begins to set, I wait for our shaggy fox, our troop of deer and all the other four-legged critters, our neighbors, to appear. I'm living a life beyond dreams!
Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world. Harriet Tubman
