my ninth house edits are doing the rounds again and they are so old... y’all i’m begging
hey! i loved your edits. could you give me any good tips for editing? i don't want to copy, just use as inspiration.
hi there anon! thank you so much for the compliment it truly means everything to me. as for your question about inspiration unfortunately, getting inspired isn't a one size fits all deal but here is some general editing advice.
getting inspired by the edits of other people is all well and good but i encourage you to try to find inspiration through anything around you! films, art, music, books... just because the medium and method are different doesn't mean you can't use these things as sources of inspiration. an example of this is my snakes as scripture edit where i used a literal prayer book as a jumping off point don’t discount anything as a potential source for creativity!
a general good editing rule of thumb for me personally is quality of execution over quantity of content. i think making something that is simple and beautiful is more impactful than just using an edit to show off your graphic skills. impressive use of software has its time and place but ultimately good edits are well thought out edits!
try!! different!! options!! don't be afraid to rework ideas if you don't like how an edit is turning out AND NEVER SCRAP SOMETHING COMPLETELY. i can't tell you how many times an old idea for an edit found new life later on in a completely different edit for me.
if you are a typography person, like myself... keep a list of your favorite type faces and make note of where they truly shine ( is this font good for display? or large bodies of text? can you read it when it is small or is it more impactful when it is bigger? what mood does this font evoke? ) and don’t forget that typefaces have HISTORY fonts.com has bios for hundreds of fonts. never count out historical context when it comes to how people are interpreting your work.
and lastly don't be afraid to do your own take on what someone else has done previously just always cite your sources and creative influences! often executing what someone else has done themselves helps you gain new skills in the process.
i hope this was helpful! and feel free to reach out if you have any follow up questions, happy editing!! 💗
