I’ve been given this inclination, this ability to create. It has proven to be a demanding, wonderful, and daunting responsibility. I consider this gift to be a little form of power.
I have seen the work of my peers and my predecessors, and have tried to gauge my place among them. What statements have they made with their work? What have they done with their power? Is my work relevant, or am I simply restating what’s come before me?
While I notice other artists are concerned solely with the aesthetic of their work, I find myself more fascinated with the interactions that happen because of the work. Yes, the process of art-making is cathartic and reviving, but the conversation that follows is the most fulfilling in my eyes.
With my art, that shred of power, I aim to better my world. I want to use art as a tool for community. Art can be transformed from static and isolated to rousing and engaging. I want to take the art scene back from the institutions and the classically educated, and encourage entrance from those who don’t think themselves to be so-called artists.
I intend to blur the solid, separate categories of art, and mend the breaks between art, design, writing, and theatre. Art has the capacity to heal and nurture; I think every person should have a place in that, regardless of his or her training or history.
I have an admiration for my teammates, for those who‘d like to call themselves creatives. If they feel they have an inclination to make, I want to make sure they feel more than welcome to play.
