Meet our Youth Intern: Steve!
Meet our youth intern, Steve! He is a participant in the Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP) under the Japanese Community Youth Council (JCYC), which aims to cultivate and enrich the lives of children and youth from diverse, multi-cultural communities throughout San Francisco and beyond.
Name: Stephen Landers
Age: 14
What grade/ what’s your favorite class: I am finishing the 9th grade. History is my favorite class because you get to learn how our country was built. Also, you learn why certain law and polices are in effect now.
Why Galeria? I know about the gallery because I passed it every day on the bus; I would see the billboard and the art was always interesting.
How long have you been interning? I’ve been interning at the gallery for about 10 months. One thing I’ve learned while interning is that running a non-profit benefits the community more than I thought.
What do you like about art? I love art because it’s a positive way of expressing yourself. My favorite way of expressing myself is through rapping because you can tell all kinds of stories: happy, mad, sad, aggressive, revenge, or just talk about someone you miss that died.
What do you do for fun? I like to hang out with friends, crack jokes, read comics, rap, and I love to write.
Best things about 24th Street: I love the mission because it’s like a little Mexico; the culture is very strong in our community. We have good food, good people, and lots of places to explore.
What do you want in the future? I want my family to live in a big house, have a successful career, and not have to worry about anything especially money.
