Digital Writing Month/Alternative CV
It was my first time in my life to rely on a CV for finding a job when I came to Sweden. Of course, I had written a CV before when applying but always as an additional paper along with other papers and personal presence when you actually meat a living human infront of you. The thing is, now I must deal with a system which is bizarre and the employers are individuals as human as robots without a face. For me, companies which outsource their HR functions are simply not willing to take responsibilities for their decisions.
The meaning of the alternative CV challenge is to create an image of ourselves as an auto portrait, “the things that matters to me”, escaping from the cage of “what matters to you”. Every CV tutorial will teach you how to modify your resume according to the company and the job you apply for. And that is seemingly reasonable approach. What most of the people experience, though, is a ghost chasing.
There are a lot of things that matters to me but here I will focus on what matters to me when I am searching for job. I would appreciate potential employers who dear to show who they are face to face, just as I do. The second thing, do as you said you will do, just as I do. That I call a responsible person to win my respect. The respect for you makes me your best employee. Simple as that!
Some of the participants in my Bachelor thesis take part of Art-in-progress which is an initiative for culture development (in this case) in the city of Patras, Greece, based on voluntarism.

I still have a few posts left to come to round this out, but thinking of leaving this blog is making me super sad. It feels like cutting the last ties with everyone in this class, particularly the Malmö students I might not see again.

Just a perfect day!

London Map Side Table by Hasan Agar
Another concept from Hasan Agar, inspired by the streets of London after many years living in the capital. The London street map is engraved on a metal surface: if you follow the gaps and solid surfaces, you might find yourself in an unforgettable place filled with wonderful memories whilst enjoying your warm cup of tea, cosy on your sofa. The city’s landmarks are also highlighted on the lace effect metal surface. This detailed side table has quirky triangular section legs which are made from solid beech with a matte finish. The surface of the table is laser cut with a matte powder paint finish and comes in three different options: black, white and watercolours. It comes as a flat pack assembly, the legs are easily screwed onto the top.

Here is an idea of a visual map, a very personalized one! It shows my everyday travels to Malmö for school, job or to meet friends. Working on with my camera to capture motion blurs in a daylight and without a tripod made me think of what is relatively still and what is moving. The most dynamic things are fabrics and plants moved by the strong wind in Malmö and also the water. Next are off course people and transportation means. When moving in a train or a bus everything outside the window turns into motion blurs, mostly what is near and less those objects that are far away. Lighting is another dynamic variable which becomes more active with the coming of the evenings. This video is made to suit the music I usually listen when I travel, one of my favorite pieces, please watch together with it: youtube.com/watch?v=r9w4eq7QX6E from the 0:29 min or anywhere from the middle
I still haven’t seen a squirrel.
there are no fireflies either...
This is going to take a looong time.
Keep on sweating pal! This looks like a lovely dream(Imagining)!
Swedish Tomato
Growing tomatoes and bananas in cold countries didn’t seem possible a while ago. Now ideas which are inspired by the localism teach us to only buy products produced nearby. But is this really sustainable? To plant gardens for recreation, yes. It is good to have the knowledge of course. But what happens if this philosophy drive us out of balance, when localism becomes the driving force of the most consumers?
Growing a tomato or whatever plant which needs more warmth and sun takes a lot more effort to produce in cold countries and it tastes ugly (sorry). The consumer is left with no choice but to pay expensive amounts of money to get a bad product. In locally based economy we don’t need others any more. And we don’t care about them. In the locally focused economy warm countries start to abandon growing fruits and vegetables, because other countries don’t buy any more. They start to develop industries and destroy their environments to be able to catch up with others. So they too don’t need the technology of other countries any more (or do they?!).
In US I’m pretty sure they don’t try to make grape-growing production industry in Alaska. Alaska people maybe are good at something else instead and they exchange with California grapes or wine. In Europe the countries are relatively smaller (think US states) and they don’t dare to say a production in the neighbor country is local. We try to produce the whole world in our backyard when instead we should focusing on what we are good at. And sustainable transportation. I believe in the comparative advantages and I don’t want to stay in my backyard all my life. I like to travel and see how other people live and think and maybe learn something myself.
Please note: I also start to criticize myself that I’m too critical about Sweden. Most possible reason-my endless struggle with trains and busses, and long distances making me stressed and irritated. But off course there are many wonderful things here: my love - Mathias, music and films, education, commitment to justice, strawberries and all the other bäääär, potatoes etc. But it is mostly in the summer I just dream to taste a reeeaaal tomato!
Found in Copenhagen. This makes so much sense to me.
I want to know where you found this? What is so wrong with encouraging education for all people? Even if it doesn’t immediately lead to a job of some sort. Students deserve time to figure out their futures. It takes time to know what to do with your life. Why allow people to get into tons of debt and be ruined for the rest of their lives. Not everyone is privileged to have resources to fund education. And education should be encouraged for all people, regardless of their social status. It betters people, and benefits the community as a whole.
It was an art installation in Copenhagen’s city hall. I am sure the system in place is abused way too much. There are people that do not need a college education and frankly if they go it will do them no good. This concept has been completely lost over time. I really don’t think a $2250 semester fee is going to result in people having “tons of debt and be ruined for the rest of their lives” if they are truly investing their education in their future.
I think that education should not be viewed as a means for employment at all. Of course our current system requires that and I’m conscious of my career in every class I sign up for, but there will never ever be a time when a college education will not do good.
Maybe it isn’t directly an employable skill, but more learning is never bad! It opens perspectives and acceptance and allows for greater understandings, all things that lead to happy, healthy, intelligent, interesting people. Why would enriching your citizens be bad?
Yea the last couple points of that person’s statement is off, honestly I hadn’t read that much into it before now. I just think there should be a fee so that a student has something to lose, something that will motivate them to think a bit about their future. I do not know enough details about Swedish tertiary education to make any conclusions, this is all just first thoughts. Many people will say that we should do what we love and, in an ideal world, make our own choices without any persuasion from possible financial problems. “Live in the now.” Then some of these same people will say we need to plan for the future, in regards to sustainability. There’s a bit of a disconnect.
Some people have literally nothing left to lose. Why does there need to be threat of negativity to cause motivation, people can be motivated simply from the hope of where their education will take them.
Using this logic in a different scenario, I do not practice and spend hours and hours at my barn working and riding because I am afraid of losing. I do it because I am proud of my accomplishments and I want to work hard for something I love. There is absolutely no reason why this same ideology cannot be applied to education.
(In addition, it’s absolutely proven over and over again that positive reinforcement is a better motivator than negative. Striving for positivity is much better for one’s health than pushing themselves over the edge for fear of falling off it.)
Happy to read this discussion! Off course if you really want something from life you need to scarify in order to appreciate it. What this person doesn’t understand is becoming a student in Scandinavia - I don’t really know but in Sweden is not like waiting for apples to drop from the tree to your mouth. You give up much more than the non-students do. Even if no fee, students take loan in order to survive which we must pay back. The life in Sweden is really expensive and impossible to sustain without an income. So yes, we scarify a lot by making this choice.
Does society pay for our education? I’m pretty sure that who wrote this statement doesn’t have much knowledge of economics and how taxes function. Those who choose not to study and start to work after HS rather likely doesn’t get high rates of income. Those who choose to study get higher rates. In Sweden, the more income the higher taxes. Now who pays for what?! When students get their jobs and get a better income a part of their taxes goes to the next students. Plus they pay their loans. Hope nobody feels robed after my post ;)
