Cited sources: i pulled some specific characterization beats from @garage-gremlin 's incredible fic over here (specifically, what max reports yuki said to him). There's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it reference to casual yuki/max, and also i guess some max/daniel feminization going on in here.
They are on the yacht, because Max thought it would be good to remind Daniel that he still has many good things. Like Maxâs yacht.
It is unfortunately a little chilly, but even off Monaco that is what January will get you. If Daniel had not spent so long running around America, they could have gone earlier. But it was fine: Max was racing, and Daniel likes America and his friends there. He did not want to bring them on Maxâs yacht, even though Max asked.
âWe should go to Palermo,â Daniel says from the deck chair next to Max. The hum of the engines had almost sent Max to sleep, even with the cool air across his face. His jacket is practically thermal. He put Daniel in a matching one, and belowdecks the heat is turned all the way up. The hardwood floors are heated from beneath, like they are at Geriâs house. Itâs all very nice.
âPalermo?â says Max. âWill you speak Italian then, Daniel?â
âI want fried food,â Daniel says, sidestepping the Italian. Max is convinced Daniel understands more Italian and French than he lets on, but thatâs not hard because he mostly pretends he doesnât understand any. He gives people very blank looks sometimes, in shops and things, when they approach him. It is a little funny.
âWe can go to Palermo,â Max says easily. âIf you want to be gone for two or three days.â
Getting a spot to dock at Palermo is pretty much impossible, but that can be taken care of.
âMaybe,â says Daniel. About as expected, Max thinks.
When Max had tracked down the third new number Daniel had gotten in three months and texted to politely ask if Daniel wanted to come out on the yacht (asking doesnât actually work with Daniel â heâd texted âYou should come on the yacht with me. 24th.â) Daniel had replied with âlol Iâll jump into the sea đââïžđââïžđââïžâ and then showed up at 6AM the morning of the 24th.
Daniel being a little moody about Palermo is nothing, really. A little pleasant, in fact.
âDid you know,â Max says to the deck chair next to him, âThat Yuki says when I cover my face I look like a girl?â
Daniel, presumably hitting pause on thinking of jumping into the sea, rolls over in his deck chair to face Max.
âWhat?â he says.
âWhen I am surprised, you know,â Max says, and models it: two hands over the lower half of his face.
Daniel mostly looks confused. And a little like he darkly suspects what happened after Yuki said thisâ but whatever, Max is not the one who was in America all this time, doing who knows what.
There is a pause.
âYou used to let me be the girl,â Max says, to the gusting wind over the Mediterranean. The sea around them is like blue velvet, choppy but soft.Â
Danielâs face is finally blank and focused. He mouths âlet meâ to himself.
Max rolls onto his side to face Daniel as well. This is not enough. He stands up, looking down at Daniel on the deck chair.
No need to tower. He sits on Danielâs deck chair, his jacket whispering. He reaches out and tucks a few of Danielâs curls a little more securely under his hat, because they are dancing into his eyes in the wind. He tucks Danielâs hair behind his ear. Danielâs hand comes up loosely around Maxâs wrist. His mouth is parted.
âIf you want to be the girl, you must of course just ask,â Max says.
Danielâs throat works. His Adamâs apple bobs.Â
Max says, âThe girl can still fuck me,â and laughs, because it sounds funny to say.
âOh,â breathes Daniel, like this is what unlocked something.
Max takes Danielâs hand from around Maxâs wrist and kisses the knuckles.
âAh, Daniel,â he says. âYou are cold again.â
Sorry, but after the race this weekend, all I can think about is Only Memories chapter 10 when Max does one of the greatest races in the rain of all time likeâŠâŠ Your mind!!! You literally predicted (part of) the future!!!! Genuinely insane

I stumbled upon & binge read only memories this weekend and oh my god. Oh my god! Oh. My god!
First of all, thank you so much for writing it. Itâs honestly one of those fics that completely shifted the way I think and read fic and think about fic. Itâs one of those fics that is going to stay with me for a looooong time. I have actually re read it a few times since Friday and every time Iâm blown away by it.
The story itself is incredible but the way you write the details and hint at things but donât say them is unbelievable. How you write both max and Daniel and their relationship and how they both view whatâs happened so differently even though theyâre experiencing the same events. I fell in love with both of them so much. Sometimes I just wanted to shake Daniel and be like TALK to people! TALK to your friends and family but also understood why he wouldnât so much and felt so much for what he was going through. How Max is so black and white and is like well Iâm breaking up with Kelly and itâs obviously better when weâre in the same bed and obviously Daniel should be with me at all times feels so realistic to him. How he wanted to introduce Daniel to Martin as his omega đđđđ. Them holding hands on the helicopter, thatâs just what they do automatically now. The line âDaniel was asleep, Daniel was still sleeping!â And that entire paragraph and scene leading up to and after it absolutely floored me and I keep re reading it because I feel like you gain so much insight into their relationship just from that - even thought itâs from Christianâs perspective.
All the side characters were so amazingly done and fleshed out. Especially Kelly and Heidi; honestly I feel like it was the first fic Iâve read where you see why theyâre with them and see why theyâre in love and how theyâre so good together - I genuinely felt I was getting to see their relationships in real life.

i'll fully admit that part of the "hinting at things without saying them out loud" was partially for fun, partially because that's just the way i write, but also very much an intentionally thing to try and sell the story to the reader. omegaverse in general is such an unhinged concept, right? and even though fandom is pretty familiar with it now, i realized that my version had a whole bunch of extra weirdness. spontaneous conversion! soulbonds! weird telepathy! scentbonding! i don't know if i came up with anything entirely new (maybe the alpha-omega bond manifesting as light). mysteries and tension is a really good way, i think, to draw readers into a story and get them to invest.
which is to say that yes!!! the black and white thinking!!! max is SUCH a fun character to think about for me for rpf, especially because i started following the sport in 2021 and the first through nineteenth impressions that i had of max were from that wdc campaign (as somebody who took .02 seconds to develop a lewis bias, it was not a positive one lol). honestly, i don't know if i ever would've dived into the lore if i hadn't run into SO much fic that had him as young and soft and tender and privately unsure about being in f1. i was really curious where it was coming from, and once i did start seeing the older stuff and learning the family lore, it was really interesting to me to spend time constructing a characterization for max and then sort of feel my way through conveying it through this story.
so what max is black and white about! what he allows nuance for! when he allows nuance! and who he sees nuance for! who he takes efforts for! what is important to him! max absolutely stands with canceled his canceled wife (and his canceled abusive dad and his canceled racist dad and others, no doubt).
and hurray for the heidi and kelly stuff being interesting and feeling convincing! i spent a lot of time fretting about the heidi stuff because there was so little that i could find of her on the internet in english (or even in translation, thanks Google) and because i was inventing so much from whole cloth without any knowledge of the cultural context. and yeah, i know it's wild to spend so much time talking about the ex-partners when the whole point of this fic was that max and daniel are now tied together forever and ever, but i felt like it left piles of storytelling money on the table to not include them at least a little, especially in a story where i was intentionally writing bits from the pov of lots of other non-driver people. heidi was going to show up at a race unexpectedly from pretty early on in the plotting, but i realized that in order for that to feel important and sad like i wanted, there had to be more of her in the story. and once i started getting into the lore for her (and her dad, tbh), things started getting fun.
kelly shows up a lot less in this fic outside of max's memories, but i'm working on a bunch of stuff about her for the current fic that i've been slowly, slowly chipping away at.

Max asks about life in Faenza these days; Yuki tells Max about the tacos he had in Mexico City, which Max points out is a polite way of saying that the tacos from this place in Monaco are not very good, and Yuki laughs, only a little embarrassed. In fact, Max agrees with him. While Ricky Bobby convinces his team principal to run a second team for his best friend, Max tries to convince Yuki to take up padel. It is good exercise, Max says. Michael will approve. And all the guys on the grid play.Â
the sprint commentary from nico is precisely why i refuse to learn more about brocedes because the crumbs i do know are already enough to devastate me. because yes, nico might have spent that entire sprint trying to send telepathic signals to lewis on how he could improve so he could win. yes, every other word out of his mouth might have been about how he knows lewis can be more agressive than that, how he knows lewis and knows he can do better. but that's all commentary, that's still technically part of his job description.
but what do you mean lewis still sends christmas presents to nico's daughters every year?? what do you mean lewis, when talking about the first time he visited monaco said that it wasn't for a a gp, it was because 'a f- ...someone i know- ...a friend of mine invited me'??? the friend in question? a 13 year old nico. what do you mean that now, 25 years later, they live in the same apartment building in monaco???? what do you mean nico said 'he's still my best friend at heart'????? what do you mean lewis, when asked if he was a better driver now then he was in 2016, completely unprompted said 'yes, and better teammate' and then the camera cut to nico wHO WAS ON THE BROADCAST THAT WEEKEND AND HE JUST LOOKED DEVASTATED??????
the childhood best friends -> teammates -> enemies -> strangers -> whatever the fuck it is they've got going on now is just too strong and it would pull me in too deep and i would never escape.
