        𝑖𝑠𝑎𝑖𝑎ℎ  𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑠       blankly  a  moment  before   catching   the   miscommunication .    he  feels  his  face   flush   up ,   panicking .    he  didn’t   mean  to  make  it  sound  like  he  was   lacking  or  wanted  her  to  go  through  that  trouble  just  for   him .    ❛     no !    ❜       he  says  a  little  too   ardently .   he  catches  it  quick ,   clearing   his  throat .    ❛     i  mean ,   that’s  not  what  i  mean  —   meant .   you  don’t  have  to  do  that .   but   thanks .   i  was  just  curious  at  you    making   them .    yourself .   i   usually  just  have  bags  of  store-bought  things ,   or something  simple .   like   nuts .  ❜       part  of  him  realises  that  might  have  to  do  with   imposing   himself  in  too  much  of   someone  else’s   house ,   but  he  refuses  to  think  too deeply  of  it ,   jumping   back  on - topic .    ❛    ah ,   maybe  that  is  just  it .    i’m  never  without  someone  else’s  pet  around ,  really .    i  just  get   worried   it’ll  be  too  much  for  him  and  he’d  get   sick   from  the  stress  or  something .    so  i’ll  trust  you ,  ❜       he  admits ,   giving  a  shrug .   he’s  always  a  bit   nervous   at  the  possibility  of  having   over - guessed   bibby’s  attachment ,   but  the  first  train  ride  with  him   did   involve  not  even  knowing  he’d  been  there .    so .

          she  let  out  a  little  laugh  as  his  cheeks  flushed  ,   feeling  a  little  silly  herself  .   some  people  did  prefer  the  snacks  that  were  sold  on  the  trolley  .   personally  ,   greta  could  make  better  snacks  and  it  was  nice  to  spend  time  in  the  kitchen  with  her  family  before  she  left  them  until  the  holidays  .   “ i  can  make  snacks  though  .   no  problem  . ”   but  she  didn’t  want  to  make  him  uncomfortable  if  that’s  not  something  he  wanted  .   “ when  i  was  wee  and  my  parents  had  to  drive  me  down  to  the  train  ,   we  would  always  pack  homemade  snacks  in  the  car  .   this  year  ma  and  pa  are  shovin’  me  on  a  train  to  london  cause  mora  has  a  flat  there  an’  can  take  me  to  kings  cross  . ”   it  always  seemed  like  a  tradition  to  her  to  spend  time  with  her  family  before  she  left  .   “ gran’s  been  teaching  me  how  to  make  cheese  . ”   it  was  actually  kind  of  interesting  .   when  it  came  to  pets  ,   she  went  a  little  far  with  making  sure  her  own  was  alright  .   james  was  the  most  important  familiar  to  her  .   “ no  ,   no  ,   i  think  you’re  normal  to  get  all  worried  .   if  you’re  really  worried  an’  want  ,   i  sit  with  a  buncha  people  that  have  toads  ,   we’d  be  happy  to  make  sure  bibby  is  doin’  okay  . ”   she  often  worried  that  the  trip  was  too  much  for  james  .   “ sure  we’d  love  to  have  you  drop  in  an’  everythin’  .   an’  if  you  get  too  worried  ,   rory  and  i  raise  frogs  ,   so  i  can  probably  help  with  makin’  sure  bibby  is  alright  .   it’s  a  long  trip  for  ‘em  goin’  all  the  way  to  london  then  havin’  to  go  back  to  the  scotland  . ”

pandora had only been out for a quiet wander around the forests nearby hogsmede, wanting to get some fresh air after one of her spell experiments had ended in a puff of smoke, but it was hardly peaceful for long. she had come across a few frogs on her walk, some injured, others not leaving the injured. she knew she had to help them, and she knew just the girl who would help.

she ran down the cold, leafy path back to the centre of town, hoping she might find the girl she had in mind. eventually she came to a quick halt in the form of bumping into someone. just the person she was looking for.

“greta! thank goodness i found you! i need your help!”

          greta  was  doing  what  bit  of  school  shopping  she  needed  to  do  here  in  hogsmeade  before  she  got  shipped  to  london  to  stay  with  her  sister  for  the  last  bit  of  shopping  she  needed  to  do  .   and  then  she’d  be  off  to  school  .   the  village  seemed  quieter  than  normal  and  she  was  thankful  for  that  .   her  parents  were  pretty  annoyed  at  her  for  the  latest  protest  she  let  her  sisters  drag  her  to  this  summer  .   she  was  thinking  about  going  to  get  some  new  quills  since  she  wasn’t  sure  if  her  old  ones  were  still  okay  ...   if  she  even  remembered  where  they  were  .   lost  in  thought  ,   she  found  herself  bumping  into  someone  . 

          “ sorry  ! ”   she  exclaimed  ,   making  sure  she  hadn’t  jostled  her  bags  too  much  .   “ wasn’t  payin’  attention  . ”   greta  said  quickly  at  the  same  time  the  other  started  talking  .   her  name  coming  from  the  mouth  of  the  other  made  her  head  shoot  up  in  shock  .   “ oh,   did  ya  need  somethin’  ? ”   the  dark  haired  girl  asked  tilting  her  head  to  the  side  and  looking  around  .

“gretagretagretagretagreta good godric, just the person I wanted to see!” the words tumbled out of james almost as quickly as he appeared, throwing himself into greta’s line of vision.”you have to help me settle an argument. it isn’t discrimination not to let frogs into the frog choir, the frogs just can’t sing, right?!”

          “ well  someone’s  excited  to  see  me  .   calm  down  potter  or  you’ll  scare  james  .”   she  listened  to  the  rest  of  his  ramblings  wanting  to  know  if  he  was  serious  or  if  he  was  just  joking  .   “ technically  the  frogs  aren’t  singin’  ,   we  are  the  ones  doin’  that  .   they  just  do  what  they  do  best  and  that’s  ribbitin’  .   don’t  know  if  that  counts  as  discrimination  or  whatever  . ”   she  looked  at  him  and  pulled  james  off  her  shoulder  .   “ now  you are  sacrin’  him  so  please  quiet  down  . ”

        ❛     𝑤𝑎𝑖𝑡 .    𝑦𝑜𝑢   𝑚𝑎𝑘𝑒        your  snacks  ?    ❜       isaiah   fixates   on  that  point  a  second ,    shaking  his  head   back   into  the  topic  at  hand .     ❛    ah   —   what  do  you  do  for  him ?  ❜       he  asks ,    the  question  more  than   genuine   on  his  tongue .   it  was   strange ,   getting  a  toad   attached  to  him  the  way  he  never  thought  could   happen   in  muggle  territory .   maybe  it   can ,    and  isaiah  just  spends  too  much  of  his  time  on  hogwarts   ground   rather  than  in  the  building .    and  maybe  that’s  why  you’re  getting  so  many  trolls ,   his   unhelpful   brain  supplies .    ❛    bibby  starts  pacing  like   crazy   whenever  we’re  on  the  train .  ❜

          “ wait  you  mean  you  don’t  have  snacks  ? ”   she  asked  ,  tilting  her  head  to  the  side  for  a  moment  .   she  was  confused  as  to  why  anyone  would  not  bring  their  own  snacks  on  the  train  .   especially  after  she  had  to  drive  all  the  way  to  the  train  station  in  the  first  place  .   which  was  another  annoying  thing  .   “ do  you  want  me  to  make  you  snacks  too ? ”   she  would  .   there  was  no  reason  why  she  shouldn’t  for  her  friends  .   “ i  already  make  snacks  for  others  too  . ”   she  thought  about  how  loud  and  annoying  james  became  on  the  train  with  a  bit  of  a  smile  .   it  never  bothered  her  ,   but  she  was  used  to  it  .   “ honestly  ,   with  him  ,   i’m  just  i  donno  used  to  him  getting  a  bit  wild  on  the  train  .   he’s  mostly  loud  and  we’ve  got  tons  of  frogs  at  home  ,   so  it  doesn’t  bother  me  . ”   she  bit  down  on  her  lip  .   “ bibby  is  probably  just  nervous  with  all  the  cats  and  owls  . ”

          greta  did  not  want  to  go  back  to  school  this  year  .   her  parents  kept  talking  about  important  events  they  were  getting  to  cover  for  the  paper  and  it  meant  that  greta  would  be  stuck  in  a  dusty  castle  and  unable  to  help  out  with  protests  .   however  ,   school  was  important  and  she  generally  did  not  want  to  miss  her  last  year  of  education  .   “ james  is  all  ready  to  get  back  to  school  ,   so  he’d  be  the  only  one  .   i  haven’t  even  decided  what  i’m  gonna  make  for  my  train  snack  . ”   or  the  car  ride  to  the  train  station  .

“Then you aren’t here to make a request,” Axel deduces with a soft chuckle, slipping half of his earnings into the depths of his leather jacket as he settles himself cross-legged on the ground. “I’m a musician, just taking a break from playing,” he continues, gesturing over his shoulder at his guitar, which is currently propped against the window of the café behind him.

         “ no  clearly  not  here  to  make  a  request  .   i  was  actually  just  looking  at  the  toads  in  the  window  of  the  menagerie  . ”   that  probably  seemed  strange  though  greta  never  cared  about  seeming  strange  .   not  when  other  people  were  stranger  than  she  was  .   “ well  clearly  you’re  a  musician  if  you’ve  got  a  guitar  .   i’m  not  blind  . ”   greta  wondered  if  she  was  being  rude  ,  then  she  decided  she  didn’t  really  care  .   “ what  kind  of  music  do  you  play  ? ”   she  asked  .   deciding  that  she  might  as  well  not  be  mean  when  she  could  be  nice  .   “ are  you  famous  or  somethin’  ? ”   she  had  to  admit  that  she  didn’t  really  follow  the  music  scene  all that  much  .

It’s a slow day in Diagon Alley, and Axel is crouched over his open guitar case, counting up the change he’s collected since he arrived an hour ago. It’s not a lot, but he isn’t disheartened - that’s just how it goes sometimes.

Feeling observed, he glances up from what he’s doing, an easy smile spreading across his features. “I’m on a break, but if you have a request, maybe I’ll make an exception.”

          merlin  forbid  that  she  had  to  sit  in  a  car  for  over  eight  hours  just  to  get  to  diagon  alley  to  get  her  school  supplies  .   greta  really  hated  the  idea  that  she  had  to  stay  in  london  for  the  remainder  of  the  summer  ,   even  if  it  meant  that  she  was  getting  to  spend  time  with  her  sister  .   so  she  was  already  in  a  mood  when  she  walked  around  the  alley  .   she  decidedly  was  not  going  to  stare  at  people  ,   except  the  menagerie  had  some  nice  looking  toads  in  their  window  .   her  mother  would  not  be  happy  if  she  came  home  with  another  pet  .   

          she  hadn’t  even  noticed  that  she  was  looking  at  this  stranger  ,   lost  in  thought  ,   wanting  to  be  home  and  not  in  london  .   “ on  break  from  what  ? ”

DILAN.

“you really think this little frog is a familiar? oh, i’d love to learn more about that whole subject. do you think they’ll cover it in care of magical creatures this year? maybe we can ask them too?” it was all rather fascinating but in the end had nothing to do with dilans ambitions. but she wanted to enjoy her last year, not just spend the whole thing working. “everything?” she said tentatively, not wanting this conversation to go where she thought it might be heading. in her mind the future was still bright, but she knew she was being hopelessly optimistic. “well we only have so much time before the year starts, so maybe this weekend?” 

          “sure why not? my patronus is a white’s tree frog an’ i know that’s not an indicator of these sorts of things, but i think it’s kinda nice ta think that maybe he’s more than just a friend.” greta did believe he was more of a friend than her pet. she had conversations with him. her brother loved him too. “oh, if they don’t maybe we can ask if they could. learnin’ about familiars is something i’d like ta know more about.” she wasn’t sure what was going to happen this year. with everyone so determined to with their careers, greta still had no idea what direction her attention would pull her. maybe she’d spend this year trying to decide what career worked best for her. “yeah, like politics and stuff. here, in the muggle world, all over the world. there’s a lot going on! too much to get involved in. my brain can’t handle it all.” she didn’t expect many people to understand why all sorts of politics interested her. “that’s true. i’ll ask my parents and let you know.”

NARCISSA.

politics were her family’s entire life. she had paid close attention to it but never tried to involve herself in it knowing that it would depress her more than anything when she thought about her family. “i don’t think so,” she says with a shrug, “i think they’re just happy that i have friends.” she says with a small smile, she figured it would be easiest to floo in from her cousin’s house that was here in london, plus it would be nice to see her aunt, it had been a while since she had stopped by and bothered regulus and sirius. “my aunt is a bit… intense at first. best just to smile and nod, i can do all the talking.” she patted her friend’s shoulder now. 

          muggle politics, greta knew, were very different than the wixen ones she was now hearing about. personally, she knew what she thought about everything that was going on, but she didn’t know what she specifically was supposed to do about it. “alright! my parents just don’t like me bringin’ strangers home, so i wanted ta make sure an’ all.” greta didn’t know what her parents would think if she randomly brought someone home they didn’t know. her parents were a bit overprotective of her though and if they knew of the tensions where greta spent so much time, she was sure they’d make her stay at home. “i get that, my family can be intense at first too. don’t worry. i won’t embarrass you or anything. smile an’ nod. i can do that.”

DILAN.

“sometimes i think magical pets have a way of living longer than regular ones, but that’s just a silly suspicion of mine, who knows if it’s true.” she wondered then if the frog felt cold or warm, if it would be slimy and truthfully she wouldn’t even mind if it was. “i’d decided late in fifth year that i wanted to be a healer, barely scraped the OWLs i needed too and even this year i know i’ll have to work hard to earn the right NEWTs. i don’t think it’s odd at all to decide this year.” she was trying to sound encouraging but wasn’t sure she was doing a good job. “oh i think so too! they’ve made so many wonderful things, what delightful inds they certainly have. i haven’t gotten to meet too many and i have seen a telly before but not a lot.” she was talking too much now as she got overly excited. “oh! i’d love that!” 

          “well, yeah, but supposedly he’s just a regular frog. i wonder if once a pet is your familiar, it makes them harder to kill or somethin’? cause aren’t the cats just cats until you know, you bond with them?” greta had lots of theories on how familiars worked and why they were so important to wixen. she also wondered if wixen without familiars had a different way of casting magic or how much an animal really made a difference. “i’m very passionate about animals, but i don’t think that’s a field i want to go into. i’m very passionate about food too. it’s just a matter of well, what happens after everything, you know.” there was a lot going on in the world. greta didn’t know what she would have done if she hadn’t grown up with a telly. personally, she loved muggle inventions and even if she’d grown up in an all magic house she would have insisted on learning everything about the world. when she wanted to, greta could make a compelling argument. “sure! you just have to let me know when and i can arrange it.”
