‪ On This Day in Scottish History 18th August 1746 Arthur Elphinstone, Lord Balmerino, the Jacobite noble, was executed. Balmerino was captured along with Lord Kilmarnock after the Battle of Culloden and the pair were tried for treason in London and beheaded in the Tower of London.

‪ On This Day in Scottish History 16th August 1864 Elsie Maud Inglis was born in India. Elsie’s parents were originally from Edinburgh. Elsie made her name as a pioneering surgeon and as a suffragette. When war broke out in 1914 Elsie pioneered a medical unit run by women, the 200 bed Scottish Woman’s Hospital at Abbaye de Royaumont, was staffed and run solely by women.

James Drummond, Lord Perth, was born. Drummond was a Scottish statesman and diplomat he was mostly known for his role as the First Secretary-General of the League of Nations. Drummond served for fourteen years as Secretary-General between 1919 and 1933. He is credited with establishing an efficient international civil.

Sir Walter Scott, poet and novelist, was born in Edinburgh. Scott's was a poet, novelist, ballad-collector. He is probably most renowned as the founder of the genre of the historical novel, involving tales of romance, gallantry and chivalry His first publication in this genre was Waverley in 1814.

This Day In Scottish History 29th July 1567 King James VI was crowned at Stirling. This Day In Scottish History 28th July 1645 At Dunkeld in Perthshire, the royalist Marquess of Montrose beat General Baillie in a skirmish which was part of the English civil war. For a war of position’s, the Highlanders had neither aptitude or inclination and at Dunkeld the greater part of them went home. www.gengenieresearch.com

This Day In Scottish History 27th July 1689 The battle of Killiecrankie took place. This occurred when the government sent an army north to deal with Viscount Dundee and his newly formed Jacobite army in its Atholl heartland. The Jacobites delivered a crushing blow tot he government troops under General MacKay. www.gengenieresearch.com

This Day In Scottish History 25th July 1843 Charles MacIntosh inventor of the plastic Mac died. Charles discovered the first rainproof cloth in 1818 by joining 2 sheets of material together with dissolved Indian rubber. www.gengenieresearch.com

This Day In Scottish History 24th July 1567 Mary Queen of Scots was forced to abdicate the throne. Lord’s Ruthven and Lyndsay visited Mary while she was held at Loch Leven Castle and threatening her with execution if she did not sign the abdication papers. This Day In Scottish History 23rd July 1745 Prince Charles Edward Stewart landed at Eriskay in the Outer Hebrides. With only 7 men he persuaded enough Scots to follow him so he could raise his standard at Glenfinnan a month. www.gengenieresearch.com
