Audubon Loates — Ruffed Grouse (PP 30/130)

A little history drop for the natural history nerds:

John James Audubon draws it from nature, 1824. Robert Havell engraves it for the double-elephant folio. 160 years later, M. Bernard Loates recreates it stroke for stroke for the Audubon Masters Collection / Master Editions Inc.

This one is a Publisher's Proof, 30/130, 38x48cm, with the full suite of chop marks and that big circular JOHN JAMES AUDUBON MASTER EDITIONS INC blind stamp.

Two strutting males, ruffs out, tails fanned, a female judging their life choices. Peak Audubon drama.

Bent Pine // A.Y. Jackson - 625/777 Masters Edition Lithograph [24x20"]

Found this beautiful large format vintage lithograph from Ontario - Group of Seven founding member Alexander Young Jackson. The story behind this pine is Killarney Provincial Park history. Jackson's paintings literally saved this wilderness from logging in the 1930s.

Wassi Art Jamaica // Monumental 23"H x 9"W Cobalt Goddes

Founded 1992 by Theresa Lee in Ocho Rios, Wassi Art is built on Blue Mountain terracotta clay dug by hand and a collective of Jamaican artists. This piece by RGS is 23 inches high, 9 inches wide, wheel thrown, then coated in deep cobalt and hand incised to reveal the tan body beneath. Two serene goddess faces, hair like water, Art Deco meets Afro Caribbean.

Monumental floor vases this size rarely left the island. Original, handmade, signed.

Lapid Pottery Works, Tel Aviv Jaffa, 1960s. 3.5" high stoneware cachepot with wax resist stripes, brown drip, teal and ochre, white lava bubbles, black interior.

History note: factory opened 1944, closed 1990, art directed by Elisabeth Cohen Silberschmidt, all handpainted by women artists who signed each base for pay.
