fam-i-ly hang-ov-er: (noun; album; concept) ~to spend time with family, and regardless of intoxicant consumption a day’s break to recover is required. ~to create a unified sound which conveys the joy of being hungover together. ~the idea that goo goo is only goo joub when shared.
To me, the most Beatles thing about Walrus is how their music reflects the love and care each Justin, Keith, and Murphy of the brotherhood that is a foundation for the sonic joy they create together. It shines through on stage, and especially drives the beautiful Instagram story they have broadcast expertly especially since the European tour around release day in June.
Family Hangover hits the mark on nuanced soundscapes obviously inspired by Tame Impala (to the point where I thought a Halifax diner was playing the new single, but it was actually an Impala album). In the recent press an incredible range of comparisons have been made to the range of legends from the Beatles to more recent heros – The Shins. Being welcomed under The Beatles’ lyrics are what has moulded the contours of sound into the catchy melodies coming from your white vinyl (or bandcamp purchase). It’s a rebirth, or a third eye gaze, of that initial world view that helped our globalized world see the peace of it all too.
Which is why this summer was a great one – having the opportunity to share my favourite music with a set of ears that wouldn’t otherwise have heard it, my niece quickly appreciated the call to action of Robots needing to be loved. It piqued her interest for the freshly released Glam. We both really enjoy the baseline’s slow timekeeping groove. The music videos might not be ideal for a younger audience but baby’s first psychadelia-inspired music video has to happen sometime, right. (I swear I’m a good aunt!) She totally digs it, and i’m glad for the Canadian music support for the sound these Nova Scotia dudes are building – it is something completely worth listening to, according to Nova Scotia Music Week Awards 2017! In the furskin coats, they accepted such an award with beaming smiles. true sign of earning it.
I moved to Nova Scotia around the time Walrus was signed to Madic Records, and living in and around Halifax allowed me to experience a few live performances of these songs before they were on an album; from Seahorse in June 2016, Gridlock in July 2016, to Cold Smoke in January 2017 – hearing these new sounds emerge was motivation enough to organize a show of my own while studying outside of the typical Halifax venue circuit. March 2017 was a geo-Madic preview of the album.
When your chosen name identity is Jude, after the Beatles, and your current project is to work with the ‘Walrusi’, also relative to the Beatles, it’s tough not to throw a few Hey Jude jokes in the email banter. But booking a Madic show was as easy as fighting for good music should be. A couple moments of cutting your teeth against moments of small town venue issues, and back and forth communication to keep everyone in the same key. Last minute favours and a series of synchronicities got us to the chilly Saturday night with free darts and pool and students temporarily relieved from assignments. It wasn’t perfect but it was worth it. And just the beginning of the project that has since become Side Door.
It’s no secret to most that I have been all ears to the music of Dan Mangan throughout the majority of his career – since CBC Polaris days, and I’ve been captured by his poetry and cautious opinions ever since. So when he cautiously began redefining his involvement in music with a boutique label (Madic Records) I was all ears… and in for the ride. That ride so far has offered some unique opportunities, including collaborating to host a show with little more than intuition and experience as a lifelong audience member.
However, coordinating with the team including management + these hardworking guitar wizards was a simple treat. Over brunch at the Seaport Market in February, Justin Murphy (JMurph, Justin, and Murphy are all nicknames that don’t specify which of the 5 I mean. no wonder they all have nicknames like BlaaaaaAde) chatted about the upcoming Euro tour, early news about the album recording, and general Madic banter. I made sure they knew which Lawrencetown the show was at (there’s some confusing irony about the location of a map college). All, while wearing one of Justin’s shirts that had been passed on through a clothing swap earlier that year. It would be easy to claim ‘Walrus stalker’, but because this is just how Halifax works, this has been the way I have come to appreciate this album from a few angles – and why I am behind it 100%.
These lads whip up some funky tunes on November 24, 2017 at the Marquee Ballroom alongside Like A Motorcycle, WHOOP-Szo, No Problem, and DJCS, following a fall tour with carinae through the wild great beyond* (*a time zone or two).

Getting Better all the time
Getting Better all the time
There’s a fine line between stability and happiness. Sometimes they overlap, but when that balance is shaken it can often look like this: https://map.thedatapack.com/#/?p=MTkxOTg0Nzc0LjkyM2ZhYTguNTRjOTA5NzIwZmI1NDJmM2E3MmIyZjEzZjdhZmVmMGE=&df=1440558000&dt=1505617200&th=60&s=avocado Two years of travel has landed me back in the East after trying out Alberta again; check out the places I’ve been…

Waking in silence I search for Fragments of humanity I left on the floor In the haste to retreat into night, away from the rising sun + shaming satisfaction Of putting a face to well-worn names all over the screens The pride in Bloom, drifting as pollen dust of a familiar dream. And yet again we awaken Rebuilding identities from collections We refuse to throw out Sadly mistaken by failing to awaken earlier That today would of course be that much worse Our robotic programming needs a boosted start There’s only so much sleep to be borne in a rusted heart. That silence begins to crease as the floor boards creak, as the asphalt crumbles, as the highways are worn away All the while we are fumbling + Stumbling looking for bus change in yesterday’s jeans Spritzed and scrubbed makes up for being repeatedly snubbed A brunch date is as good as any for reasons to look fine And even if they’re rude at least you have food. Cycles of agony, met only with sympathy Throwing the power back in our court, no matter who served. Keeps the forgiveness game circling until someone’s KO’d Until moments of kindness are more frequent than surprising And willful ignorance is fleeting. And peace comes, slowly, in waves and tides, tethered to all the pushpins on our travel map. In this place, a glimpse of an entirely different reality, a mirror offering solutions built from past disasters. Deepest desires don’t exactly vanish, they bloom separately When the music is right. #mentalhealthwarrior to me means enjoying otherwise absurdly fearful things – like anxiety in a crowd, or going to new places. Because peanut allergies are a whole body awareness all the time. It wears ya down. But my love for these experiences outweigh my overwhelmed fears, more now than ever. I’m learning. Thanks. To every human I’ve known til now. via Instagram
a life in motion. products of listening, of watching – of never settling while stabilizing; finding peace in the chaos instead. but that doesn’t make it any less overwhelming on days of sorting and rereading and refeeling those hypnotizing ideas of the past. Journalling is heavy stuff – especially carrying them around all the time. A question being asked of me a few times a day lately is ‘why?’ Interesting meditation, three year old, but in short you have to eat it because it’s good for you, your mom said so, and sometimes what you *have* to do trumps what you want to do. In this case, I *have* to work on some stuff so I can share these thoughts in a better artsy way. and release them. But I also want to. Why? Because reasons. (Something my phone is used to typing by now, thanks again kid) It’s time to really start digging into this story I’ve been sitting on. It has transfigured itself into new cycles of similar people and more versions of happiness than I could have ever imagined. The surprises of living deeply never end. ‘take a sad (collection of sentimental things) and make it better’, right Jude? That said, I can’t help but be so in love with other stories + networks all around me. To everyone who might need a similar push of support – keep doing the things you want, and have, to do. It’s worth it. And so are you. the robot in you needs love too… And it’s gotta be welcomed into practice BY YOU. There’s too much crazy in the world for anything less than a best attempt at love of it all. #mentalhealthwarrior #journals #music #community #love #jointhemovement #art #poetry #storytelling #chaos #traveller #gypsygirl #lifeinsuitcases #productivenostalgia via Instagram
kinda at peace
Don’t get me started On the matters of the heart I looked far and wide And found this ebbing tide all consuming Then nothing at all But on any given day You’re still my Wonderwall Afterall this time You still have a hug that is lovingly mine same, as always but growing, changing, caring still for the silent tears we don’t dare confess, yet I keep asking for guidance from the powers at be And they…

CBC agrees: ‘Halifax is so hot right now’
Maritimers know how to have a good time, as a factor of the saltiness of their environment and family gatherings. It’s no wonder (but is certainly a refreshing treat) to hear that CBC considers some Halifax locals to be worth listening to right now. On this recent list, Devarrow and Walrus were both named as two of ten emerging artists to listen for as they continue pursuing an ever widening path…

Two theatre viewings of a old favourite and it’s still not enough, especially in the comfort of lovely mature ladies doing exactly the same thing: embracing childhood for a sec. .. for all the things wrong with the Disney version, this one attempts a transformation into a beautiful work of nostalgia balanced with coy humour and neat changes to placement of the interactions to tell the same story with the same enchanted ending. I know the critiques and I get it, but toddler Jude is very proud of adulting Jude for taking a break to enjoy a moment of beauty realized. #stilllessthanonceaday #beautyandthebeast #3dnot2d #heartstringsareplucked #hopelessromantic #mentalhealthwarrior via Instagram

geo-madic musings: leaving forests be
geo-madic musings: leaving forests be
Regardless of the instance, I’m always seeking a better way. For the sake of saving time or saving face it’s why we’re here in the first place. It’s why we sought out these third places of our past – for solace and sympathy, for challenge and calamity. For comfort, and for refuge from the fear of saying ‘i don’t know’ yet again. But we’re not all here from the same past and we’re all going to…
