Failure States: manifesto

The state of failure can be a dark and at times miserable place for the individual, undergoing a warped sense of reality and loss of confidence within oneself. This can lead to a perpetuation of doubt and uncertainty. However so, it is important to view failure as a progression to success. Without making mistakes and learning from such, we would be unable to move forward, to learn and grow. In my series of works i have perceived failure on a personal, human level. I have attempted to encapsulate the failure state broken up into three stages.

The first stage depicts the realisation and actualisation of the failure itself. I have incorporated a dark, ominous colour palette to further represent the place in which the mind is experiencing. The image in the work is looking away from the audience in a nostalgic, vulnerable expression. The gestural line work that sprawls across the face leads the viewers eye into the darkness. The incorporation of skin tones and deep reds following the gestural brush strokes to the darkness distorts the image of the face, representing the warping effect the state of failure has upon the confidence of the individual.

The second work depicts the crossroad between failure and success. A pinnacle of choices; to dwell in the misery and darkness of failure or to move forward and progress from our mistakes. This is a decision that we all must face in life. I have attempted to achieve this message through splitting the image into two sections. The right hand side incorporates a dark colour palette, with deep red trembling brushstrokes, progressively becoming more fragmented. The left hand side depicts glimpses of hope and regeneration with light green fluent gestural brushstrokes and nature imagery.

The final stage embodies myself facing forward and looking beyond. The flowers in the background and foreground of the work represents happiness, regeneration and harmony from the state of failure. I have incorporated a bright colour palette to further covey the message that through experiencing the misery of darkness and failure, we will always find light.

Final Work # 3

The final work of my series depicts myself, facing forward and looking beyond. The flowers in the background and foreground of the work represent happiness, regeneration and harmony from the state of failure. I have incorporated a bright colour palette to further convey the message that through through experiencing the misery of darkness and failure, we will always find light.

Final Work # 2 This next work depicts the transition period during the state of failure. The crossroad in which we all must face to progress forward from our failures or become engulfed in the darkness. I have attempted to simulate such a stage by splitting the work into two. I have incorporated dark, ominous tones in the right hand side. The deep red line work of the faces, progressively becoming more trembling and fragmented represents a path to further destruction. The left hand side of the work simulates regeneration from the state of failure. The light green and seemingly fluent line work of the left hand faces represent a path to happiness. I have further incorporated autumn leaves and flowers to simulate a mood of transition and regeneration.

Final work # 1 I wanted to explore the state of failure on a personal level. I have underwent many failures in my life and wanted to depict the process by using water based paint as a medium. The work depicts myself in the initial stages of failure. My gaze dwells upon the darkness. Erratic brushstrokes and deep reds pull my face further into the impending gloom. I have attempted to incorporate skin tones of the the canvas directly in front of my gaze to simulate a sense of distortion upon the mind when in this state.

After Experimenting with tonal and brushwork expression, i formulated a quick concept work attempting to encapsulate the multiple facets of the failure state. How, when in a state of failure, the mind can become detached from reality, where all happiness and colour seems to drain through oneself. The idea of the two heads facing different directions indicates my previous idea that failure is a progression and although one may experience failure multiple times in life, it is important to understand that you must always look ahead, learn from your failures and move forward.

After gaining a better understanding of colour through experimentation, i then undertook brushstroke experimentation to attempt to simulate a sense of failure or disturbance as opposed to more harmonious brushwork. As you can see in the image above, the bottom middle section represents a sense of restlessness and disturbance. I created this by trembling my hand. As the work progresses upwards the strokes become more relaxed and fluent. This experiment prompted me to understand failure on a human level as a progressive process not a state of being. That through failure, the mind can learn and overcome such states.

I then proceeded to randomly splash colour on a board, incorporating multiple techniques of brushstrokes. This experiment intended to provide a guide to discovering new and different means of colour and brushstroke expression and how i can manifest such techniques into my final work to simulate the multiple fazes of the failure state.

Furthering the point of colour graduation, each one of these equal parts are then sectionalised into six parts ranging from light to dark resulting in seventy two graduated shades from the sphere. This experiment is crucial in the development on my final work as i gained a better understanding of the which colours and tones to incorporate to create a mood of failure as opposed a mood of harmony or happiness.

I began my experiments by first researching colour and how it has the capacity to simulate mood and concept through tone. I then formulated my own colour charts to refer back to when developing my final experiments. This importance of colour is crucial in simulating a sense of atmosphere when using paint as a medium.

Utilising the failure state as a stepping stone in the design making practice is essential for learning and the creation of innovative ideas. Failure, when reflected upon appropriately can allow us to realise the problem and therefore improve it thus failure is an important element in any creative process. It serves as a platform for new ideas and experiments to arise, for us to determine what works and what doesn't and facilitate personal growth and strength within the individual.

Australian Bushfires ferociously roar through the land, seemingly destroying all life the flames encounter. Afterwards, the bush is left blackened, defeated by the fires fury. This state of failure within the bush land is crucial, as through destruction and failure comes growth. New plants begin to germinate and flourish, rising up through the ash and burnt bark in an extraordinary display of natures persistence in the face of failure.

Leaves decay amongst many others upon the forest floor, their matter slowly sinking within the dirt, enriching the soil. their life amongst the canopy above has ended. But New life pushes through the decay, strong from the fallen leaves around it.

FINAL EXPERIMENT

Before undertaking this project my understanding of a box was very stagnant; a container, case or receptacle to store objects in. Due to my previous understanding of what a box must be, i found it hard to move forward, to look outside the restraint of my normal structures of meaning. To do this, i tried to view the box as a nothing object that served no previous purpose or requirement. Thus my possibilities for engagement and transformation began to emerged. By connecting ideas and techniques of my experimental journey I began to formulate a concept for my final experiment. With transformation as my main focus i combined my love of things that grow and carpentry together to produce a recreation of the evolution of a dragonfly from a caterpillar. I found an old wooden box, abandoned in my backyard. The object looked lifeless, yet beautiful like it was crying out for a new beginning. I deconstructed the box and proceeded to cut out the body of a dragon fly and a stand base by using a stencil i sketched earlier. I then sanded back the edges of the wood, drilled holes in the circular base for a stand and in the body to insert wire through. At that point, aesthetically the wooden object was not meeting my initial expectation of what i envisioned. So i began to edit my plan, employing wood carving to soften the sharp, angular shape. This gave my object more of an organic quality. I then collaged nature inspired patterns onto paper and wrapped the paper around the wings of the dragon fly. My finished product has successfully redefined the very concept of a box. I have transformed a seemingly forgotten and lifeless object into something of beauty and ambience. Through my creative process, i have challenged my ideas of what a box could be and transformed myself along the way.

FINAL EXPERIMENT: Starting to doubt my initial idea. At this point in time my 'sculpture' is looking more like a Christmas decoration for beginners (ages 8-15) then a transformed wooden dragon fly. I have decided to do some editing to my plan and employ wood carving as a technique to save this experiment. FINAL EXPERIMENT - wooden box I decided to experiment with the idea of recreating a wooden dragonfly. Why? Because the dragon fly first begins life as a caterpillar. Throughout it's life it completely transforms it's appearance into a fully winged dragon fly. This natural exhibition of transformation is fascinating. So why can't a wooden box do it too? Well it can.
