I took these in Rajmahal Sweets, it is a Bengali sweet shop managed by Mohammad Islam. It sells a mix of sweet foods from Bangladesh including mixed cakes, biscuits, fruits and marzipan based sweets. I was attracted to all of the colours in the shop and the vibrant foods all stacked in perfect order. Although the produce rather overpowers the subject I really like the way they are both of equal interest in the photo, the man being the subject but the food being his industry. The only problem is I am struggling to narrow them down to just three of the best!

I love the colours in these photo’s, they are so simple but vibrant. Lake Urmia is a salt lake in Iran, its salt concentration is about four times the concentration of natural seawater and is naturally pink

Although I chose the last three as my best images for #stdrums, these three that I took of were much better than the middle one. I chose that one because i thought that it would go better with the other two as a series but now I am re-thinking my options.

I found #stdrums busking in Brick Lane, he is known for using a suitcase as his base drum and playing around various cities and on the tube in London. He has a strong following online, over 2000 on Twitter and 600 on Facebook. I have been pleased with the photos I took but wish the light had been a little less flat, I quite like the urban aesthetics of the drums against the brick wall and the faded grey light. He is a Jazz drummer with buckets of energy and drew a small crowd, many of whom lingered a while.

This is the photo I found first which lead me to the rest of the series. The florescent lighting and colourful Pinball machines are what attracted me to the image but I also like the stance of the man, Doben caught him in a natural pose making the image seem relaxed and candid. The expression on his face, contrasted with the empty room conveys that this man really enjoys his job, making for an uplifting mood.

Brian Doben - At Work Project

Whilst looking for inspiration I came across a photographer named Brian Doben. He has been all over the world photographing people in in their workplace, L.A., Israel, Mumbai, Tokyo, Cuba,  Australia and all parts of the US and has created a really inspiring photo series. In the about section he said “At Work’ is a study of our world and how the people in it follow their unique callings.” I think that it is a really interesting idea, the project brings to light the sheer diversity of people around the world and what unusual careers there are.

My five best images from the shoot with Alex. The lighting was a bit dark in the brewery which I think made the photos look a bit flat but I tried to bring a bit more depth back in Lightroom. I took the photos as he was working, cleaning the barrels and setting them up for brewing and he was telling me about the process of making the Ales, and how different types of hops makes different flavours. It was really interesting and overall I'm pleased with the shoot.

Whilst I was home I decided to look at some of the local enterprises in my town. A few came to mind but I decided to ask a man named Alex if I could photograph him. He used to work in the city but since set up a micro brewery in his garage. It is called Brightwater Brewery and some of the Ales are called Little Nipper, White Orchid and Daisy Gold. Alex set up one of the smallest Pubs in Britain called Platform Three, it is next to Claygate Station and is the size of a small shed, or a large cupboard! It only fits the bar inside and customers sit outside with plastic cups and patio heaters. Platform 3 has great community vibes and is especially popular with commuters coming back from London.

The Person at Work Brief

The person at work brief is to photograph three different people in their workplace. The idea is to get to know them and tell a visual story of their profession. It can be of any career and as diverse as you wish but must be of three different jobs. No flash may be used-ambient light only. I think that the idea is to get used to photographing people that you don't necessarily know and asking if they will have their picture taken.  3  10” x 8” prints must be submitted for each person, making a total of 9 finished prints. They must be shot in RAW and no cropping.
