Radley was my partner for the first annual Violet Vineyard holiday gift exchange, and given that I had so much fun drawing one of their characters over the summer, I was UTTERLY DELIGHTED that fate brought us together once more.
His Majesty’s Starship is one of Radley’s more recent works, and it undertakes the epic feat of combining a veritable space odyssey with 18th century historical fiction. Yes, folks; you read that 100% right – and so far, Radley’s execution of this concept has been nothing short of SUBLIME. I’ve enjoyed every last bit and bob I’ve read from HMS already and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys cyberpunk, rococo, Pirates of the Caribbean, or Star Trek – because it has components of EACH of these (and then some)!
One of the “trusty trio” at the (literary) helm of HMS is Captain Seaġán O’Malley, and Radley requested that I draw him for our gift exchange… And to say that I was excited about this project would be a complete and utter understatement. In my mind, O’Malley is the very PROTOTYPE of a surly, cosmos-sailing space gay – and I hope I’ve managed to do him justice here.
