why did rivet leave the ncr? (based based based)

well, for starters, they never even wanted to be in the ncr in the first place. but their brother did. and mitchell was all rivet had left, so of course they followed along—despite their reservations.

the whole military thing didn’t suit rivet well, it was not their speed at all. but mitchell loved every second of it. he believed in the ncr, believed they’d really make a difference out here. rivet thought that was a load of shit, but the ncr did offer community, warm food and beds. so it wasn’t all bad, in their opinion.

rivet and mitchell made a name for themselves within the ncr. they climbed ranks, their hard work was recognized. they just worked so well together.

but when the first battle of hoover dam started looming, that was enough to finally scare rivet off. they were sure they’d lose this fight, and they were not willing to die for the ncr. mitchell was, though. they argued, pleaded, but he wouldn’t listen. he was gonna get out there and fight for that stupid dam.

rivet gave up. they consider themself a coward for it now, but they slipped away late one night. they left a note for mitchell, more of an apology than anything else. they packed up what little they had and took to a more nomadic life.

word got around quick, and the battle of hoover dam ended far sooner than rivet had thought it would. and, to their surprise, the ncr actually won. but mitchell unfortunately was a casualty in that battle.

rivet hasn’t ever forgiven themself for leaving that night. they were so sure that battle was a suicide mission—and it was, for some soldiers. but the ncr really did win, and rivet feels like they should’ve been there for that. not for the glory of winning, but to watch mitchell’s back, like they always had before.

that guilt eats away at them. to remedy this, they have a great 5-step healing plan: 1. never interact with or go near the ncr 2. change name and identity 3. kill any legion on sight 4. never go near hoover dam or boulder city 5. never talk about any of this to anyone

it works great for them. they’re doing just fine (lying)
