RUUSKA SCREECHED. THEY were very surprised to have something swing at them. Yet, they didn’t get so startled enough that they dropped their parasol. The sun would not be kind to them on a bright day like this. When they composed themselves ( or enough to speak, at least ), their voice was shaky and they were pouting. ❝ Milena scared Ruuska !! Milena scared Ruuska so bad !! That was so scary, Milena… R-Ruuska’s having a hard time— hic— ❞ One of their hands moved up to rub their eyes. Don’t cry, Ruuska, please don’t cry. 

milena’s heart froze in the grasp of her throat. ruuska was one of her best friends from the isle, they had been since the day they’d realized their parasols coordinated. she gasped arrested by the utter shock and shame of scaring ruuska. “i’m so sorry!” the shoe fell to the ground with a noisy clatter. “please don’t cry ruuska.” her gentle hands darted out to comfort them soft coos and niceties following her.

at the thought of anything happening to milena, gil swore that he could feel his heart in his throat - she was easily among the best things that had ever happened to him and he wasn’t willing to lose that now. “if it’s something that’s alive and going to attack, you need to run. i’ll fight it off for as long as i can, you just run for help okay?” taking a deep breath, he stretched his neck slightly hearing it crack. “and if it’s the second - don’t fight it, that’ll just get us in more trouble.”

as far as she was concerned gil legume was more noble than any prince on auradon (except maybe ben, but he was a king so she didn’t think that counted) and handsomer too, though the latter thought would be kept firmly locked away. inching towards the source of the noise she let a sigh of relief out, just a suit of armor that had been knocked over. “your dedication is very sweet but i think we’ll be okay.” she said, flushed from her panic.

laying a hand of his chest where the evidence was hidden he nodded, “certainly do, keeping it close to my heart.” maybe now he could tell, sure the timing wasn’t great but he wanted her to know before anything worse happened. “actually can we talk for a moment? i’ve been meant to tell you       ” just as he was about to admit how he felt a loud crash echoed through the room and he instinctively pulled her closer. “what the hell? we should go check that out.”

it was easy to lose time with gil. the cerulean sky often set before milena even had a chance to discern when the sun had risen. the isle had been different all in tones of sepia and grey but auradon had been painted in pastels. she gripped the back of his jacket trailing along behind him lacking only the fluff of a duckling. “do you think it’s going to eat us? or worse we’ll be arrested and sent back to the isle forever-” thoughts of what gil wanted to tell her were long gone overcome by her penchant for irrational fear.

perfect - milena thought that he had done something perfect, gil realized as a lump formed in his throat, suddenly overwhelmed by his feeling all over again. “of course, here let me just,” he said, crouching down so that her feet were on the ground and slowly moving from out from under here while resting his hands on her waist so that they would both maintain there balance. “you alright?” he breathed speaking into her ear before backing up a step.

had it been anyone else she might have yelped and curled into herself, retreated back into that shell of a girl she so often wore. but gil drudged out the truest form of her that swung pendulum heavy between reality and imagination. she relaxed into his touch and nodded almost imperceptibly. “i’m fine, thank you. do you have the evidence?”

“Maybe,” Imogen shrugged. It was one of the theories she’d been working on, though exactly why someone would go through all of that trouble for a simple frame job was still a question she could not answer. “I think so. If you ask me, I think the spellbook is part of some bigger plan.”

The concept of why someone would go to so much trouble escaped her, but Milena knew very little and questioned even less. It was easier that way, to live without knowing and hurting. She was a coward through and through. Imogen was much more keen to understanding and awareness. “I wish...I don’t know what I wish...I just do.”

          the  shift  in  conversation  definitely  wasn’t  expected  &  it’d  managed  to  catch  sebastian  off  guard  however  slightly.  “  i  didn’t  say  you  did,  did  i  ?  ”  despite  his  words,  his  tone  was  softer  than  usual  —  which  was  saying  a  lot  in  it  of  itself.  “  look,  i  don’t  know  who’s  behind  this,  but  if  it  wasn’t  you,  i  wouldn’t  worry.  ”

milena had a gift for reading people, for seeing through to the very heart of them. maybe growing up with a man made up of little made her keenly aware of when there was a lot to known. sebastian was rough around the edges but still genuine, still working and growing as they all were. “thank you. for the record i don’t think you did it either.”

“I’m sure we’ll find a way to keep the peace somehow, Milena.” She smiled softly at the other girl. “You’ve been okay though, right? No one’s bothered you since it happened?” Audrey had to ask. With the knowledge that most people were probably assuming it was the doings of a VK.

Truthfully she’d been on the receiving end of a few comments but she had no desire to tell Audrey. It wasn’t a machination of deceit instead shame welled up in her throat when she tried to speak. Perfect, beautiful, Audrey, what would she think if she knew Milena had attracted negative attention she wouldn’t want to associate herself with her anymore. “No, everyone’s been very cordial.”

milena bit the tip of her tongue willing the tears welling in her eyes. she knew theoretically that she was overreacting but the bare concept of disappointment and anger made her heart break break. lip pressed like petulant child she lost his gaze finding only the floor, she didn’t want to give it up, it made her feel safe. “sure.” she mumbled handing it to him reluctantly.

adjusting himself slightly so that she was more secure in her position, he nodded firmly. “more than okay, promise.” reaching up as placed the back in his pocket, he intertwined their fingers for a second before releasing her hand again. “alright, hold on tight,” he instructed, wrapping his arms around her legs before making his way to the corner that she had indicated. “here or?”

she relished in a moment’s touch from his rough palms. things with gil had always been like that, a game of maybes and maybe nots. he was a paradox, sometimes he felt like the only person in the world and sometimes he was farther away than milena could even see. “yeah that’s perfect.” she grounded herself back to the task at hand and plucked another piece of evidence from the top of suit of armor. “can you put me down now? i think i’m getting vertigo up here.”

        ❝ Last time I checked , I wasn’t the thief. ❞ He hoped she’d forget that when she swung the shoe in his direction , he yelped and jumped back a tad. But there were no hard feelings - everyone had their guard up right now. ❝ Yeah , that’s … what my mom taught me. But she normally recommended keeping a long tube sock and putting a padlock in it for self-defense. It’s EASIER to swing around , and much heavier. ❞

Milena flushed embarrassment manifesting from the tips of her ears to the edges of her toes. “Sorry.” It had always been easier to act first and think later, to let her wily heart lead her wherever it pleased and regret everything at another time. At least that was the philosophy her father had instilled in her. “Your mom sounds cool.” She mumbled.

Imogen shrugged. “I mean, the evil queen’s spell book is still gone, as far as I’ve heard,” she said. She didn’t want to scare her friend, but she thought it better to say the ugly truth than to say nothing at all. “And I think there’s a reason that a bunch of stuff was moved around in the museum, like someone wants us to focus on that rather than something else.”

“So you think someone’s trying to frame us?” Her eyebrows shot up in surprise. Imogen hadn’t explicitly stated it but Milena hoped she herself was smart enough to read between Imogen’s lines. “So then the real target is the spellbook.”

she nodded considering the words. “i’m not on the look out as much as just checking in. everyone is so stressed about what happened.” she sighed. “nobody knows who did it yet. you’re okay they wouldn’t just send somebody back unless they were sure.” she hoped.

“you’re right.” milena said solemnly. cora was always right, just like milena was always milena. cora’s very cora-ness inclined her to what felt like always having the answer. “it’s just hard to be sure of that right now.”

gil shuffed slightly to the light, careful to stay balanced so that milena wouldn’t be at risk of falling off. spitting out her sleeve, he started to crouch down before stopping mid-squat. “should we maybe check the rest of the high points of this room first?” he suggested, looking around the room to see if he could spot anything and coming up blank.

she bent over a dark curtain of hair falling across her visage. “as long as you’re okay.” nimble hands tucked the bag into his chest pocket with a pat of assurance. her serpentine spine straightened in a graceful wave and she stretched her arms up to caress the cracks in the wall. “there’s something in the right corner over there.” she said securing her hands in blonde locks of hair.

“Well, there’s no need to be in such a panic.” Audrey insisted. “They’re doing everything they can to find out what happened and whoever did this.” The princess did her best to calm the other’s nerves. Something she found herself doing ever since the news broke out. Though she, too, was left in the dark about it, Audrey found it best to stop total panic and chaos from happening the best she could.

She envied the practiced grace Audrey walked with, one steady food in front of the other always striding towards a goal. Milena was more like a bumbling newborn deer still retaining her footing on unsure terrain. The princesses in her dreams had always looked like Audrey so sure and forthright. “Yeah you’re probably right. Panic was pretty common on the Isle, in the literal sense too, there’s a guy named Panic.”

“Well, looks like your dad did teach you something useful after all,” she joked. Personally, Imogen wasn’t a huge fan of Oogie Boogie, but she wasn’t going to explicitly slander Milena’s father right now. “Well, you never really know.” Imogen shrugged. “I mean, it’s good that you’re being cautious, but I’ve got a feeling that this isn’t the last thing crime we’ll ever see.”

Milena was more like her father than she cared to admit. In retrospect she thought she was lucky, he certainly wasn’t an excellent parent but she could have grown up under the thumb of Gothel or Gaston. She found their children to be miracles of nature and science, defeating the toxic nursing of their linage. “What, really?” She said panicked. She was no stranger to fear but the primal and persistent fear of being sent back to the Isle was deeply rooted in her chest.

“Relax.” Imogen raised up her hands in surrender. “Did your dad also tell you to aim when you swing your weapon?” she asked, the barest hints of a kind smile appearing on her face. “Because if I was really the museum thief, you need to know how to take me out properly.”

milena laughed wryly. “dad didn’t teach me much of anything other than stay on the defensive and never let anyone roll your dice for you.” her eyes as with most times told more of a story than her lips ever would. “besides i don’t want to take you out. it’s auradon so it’s not like i’m in any real danger here, i’m just being cautious.”
