“That sucks, man. Maybe you should start taking another day off. We kind of need you guys relaxed and not stressed out to keep us healthy,” he said with a laugh.

“I would do that if I wasn’t the only nurse there. We’re trying to hire more but everyone’s so bloody unqualified. We got this one Eerie who dressed as a Nurse and kept saying sexual come-ons to Virginia during the interview.” Sighing softly, he looked to Zeke. “I know Elias is getting exhausted, too.”

“I finally get a day to myself and what do I do? Spend it out and about instead of sitting at home with my tea and a good book. I forgot how busy life was when working in a clinic.”

The offer had Blair visibly taken back, her eyebrows pinching in as she thought it over. “Um…” She nipped at her lower lip, finally giving in. “Yeah, sure, that’ll probably help with this. You absolutely promise it won’t hurt? No lingering damage?”

Blair couldn’t help but scoff. “Protection? From what, exactly?” The bitterness slipped out before she could catch herself and there was no point in trying to cover it up now. “Do you think he knew there were Loose-Mouths or anything else like us out there? My only experience has been anything through work and when I’ve gone back to see them in the cells. I keep meaning to just sit back there and observe but there’s never time, always more going on out there.” She shrugged and ran a hand through her hair. “He has a right to know, too. I’ll pass it on to her and Lieutenant, it just comes down to when. But–” She sighed and straightened up. “Alright, I’m ready for that memory…S’alright if we’re out here? Or need me to find somewhere better?”

“It won’t hurt you physically, but it’ll put your mind in such a state of shock that you’ll need some private time. So, no, we need somewhere quiet and secluded.” He told her, nodding once as he stood up slowly so she could show him where an interrogation room was. Though, as she spoke about protections and scoffing, he sighed and gestured between the two of them. “It was a charm to keep people out. But, sadly, it was only when he was there. Fucking coward.” Sighing softly, he ran a hand through his own hair before adjusting his glasses.

“You can always request that time to study them, I’m sure. Just ask your superiors. They’ll give a chance to see what they’re like. Like I said, though, I’ve only seen the ones who met their Final Death.” Slipping his hands into his pockets, he waited for her to guide them. Once she would, he’d follow right behind her but not too close to where he stepped on the back of her boots. “Just keep in mind that when we do the memory sharing, you will hear my voice, not yours. You’ll experience everything from my point of view.”

“That is something you know, especially since you’re a nosy little bugger, too, mate.” Laughing softly, he nodded to Sinclair while looking up and into his eyes. “So, have you talked to him, yet?”

Blair had just started to thumb through the file when he explained his own experience. Almost immediately her eyes snapped shut. “Sounds like my overdose, only the ecstasy turned to choking.” It wasn’t a topic she talked about too often, what lead to her death, but she did nothing to take back the words once they were out in the open. It took a moment before she opened her eyes and focused back on the file, looking up at him every so often. Slowly the corners of her mouth turned down in a gentle frown.

“I didn’t realize it was like that….How come you didn’t tell any of us back at the Cirque about it?” Blair placed the file aside and propped her head up in her hand, elbow on her desk. “Rant on all you want, really. It’s fine with me. If I’m being honest with you, though, I can barely understand Merle and Zeke….I think he’s busy off doing his flippy-jumpy stuff. I’ll pass it along to Stefan, though. He’d be better off catching up with them and getting the information he’s looking for.”

“I can tell you right now, that this death is far different. I think the best way to experience it is to see it first hand. Mind if I share it with you?” He asked, tapping his temple with his right index finger to indicate his telepathy. “I promise it won’t hurt, mate. You’ll see it, how it all happens.” Teddy explained while he hoped she would take his offer of showing her through a memory what it was like to be turned. It was different than just any sort of death. No medical records could ever explain exactly how it felt...not in a million years.

“I never told anyone because it wasn’t a concern. We put faith in a man who rarely showed affection. He wanted to help us, to keep us safe, but look how that turned out. He had a protection on us, I remember hearing about it. Being a Magi, it was exactly what had caught my attention. Besides, what I know from my Sire is not full knowledge. I have no real experience with a Loose-Mouth, just many warnings.” He told her, nodding again while chuckling at the thought of Zeke doing what he did best. “No need to pass it to Stefan, you should talk to the Captain, get her insight. It’ll help you.”

“I just put in a vacation request for work. I don’t think I have ever had to do that before,” she said with a small laugh, referring to her unorthodox work history.

“We didn’t have to do that at the Cirque, no. But where are you going?” He asked, knowing she was most likely taking Merle with her.

She watched the door close behind Teddy before looking back to the man himself, her glance falling to the file in his hands. “Well, everyone has to be useful even during the slow times,” she said with a small shrug before looking to the door when she heard it lock. “The next time you lock my door without my permission, you’ll find yourself the mental capacity to even use your powers,” she said, her tone quiet but full of the authority she held thanks to her position. Mischa didn’t even bother glancing to Teddy while she spoke, instead choosing to look through the file he had opened.

With wide eyes, Teddy nodded a couple of times while nipping his bottom lip. “Sorry, Captain. I won’t do it again.” He apologized, looking to the file as she read it over. “But, as for the file. These Loose-Mouths seem to have a quicker venom than the rest. It races through the body as the blood’s pumping through. It’s a strange adaptation, possibly something that can be traced back to the vampires that turned them.” Scratching the back of his head, he sat back in the chair while thinking of a way to explain what he needed to. “Sort of the same way a vampire can pass down their own short-comings. For example, the Romantic Elder and his venom being weak.”

Hearing noises on the other side of the door, she looked over in time to see one of her Sentinels opening the door and ushering in one of the Cirque’s own medical staff. From everything she had been hearing, it seemed like he and Virginia were forming an impressive team with Luka and Elias. “Yeah? Come in,” she said, setting aside her coffee as she looked at Teddy.

Stepping in when she had told him to, he nodded to the Sentinel in thanks before looking back to the Captain. “Apparently I’ve become a secretary thanks to the lack of patients here. Though, as we have less patients, we have more time to work on our research.” The door was closed at this point, his fingers locking the door since this was a classified file for the Captain’s eyes only. “We’ve found out something about these last Loose-Mouths that we got in the morgue.” Placing the file on the desk, he sat down and opened the file right to the images and paperwork.

“At least I’m never bored thanks to this job,” she said, growling out a sigh as she took a long drink from her coffee. She had just pulled a double shift through the night, determined to patrol the entirety of the Castor borders.

Hearing Mischa speaking, he heard no one else in there. Nodding to the officer who brought him to her office, he waited until that particular Sentinel opened the door. Once it was, he stood there patiently. “Captain, this nurse is here to see you with important files.” The Sentinel said, letting go of the knob while Teddy waited for her to let him in.

Blair furrowed her eyebrows and glanced at the reports, one hand extending in a silent request for them. “We are, I just think about it every so often. How exactly have you seen it spread? You probably have seen more than our training lets on.”

Handing over the report and raising a brow, he sighed softly and shook his head. “Well, think about it, mate. I’m a vampire.” Teddy told her while sitting down in the chair across from her desk. Pressing his index and middle finger to his pulse on the right side, he tapped it a few times to indicate where the bite was. “I can still feel it. The piercing is intoxicating, the feel of it ecstasy...but then it takes affect within just three seconds. Imagine a pain so devastating, one that feels as if a fire is burning through your veins. It feels as if it lasts hours, mate, as if it won’t end any time soon. Then, as soon as you feel as if your heart is going to burst and you’re shaking violently, you pass out and you die.” Scratching the back of his head with the hand that was on his neck, he nipped his bottom lip and then let his eyes fall back to Blair. “It goes through your system, changing your DNA, like a venomous spider or snake. The first thing you feel when you wake up is a thirst so intense that you feel you’re going bloody fuckin’ mad. Your eyes bleeding red into your irises and you latch onto the first exposure of skin that’s not yours.” 

His hand fell down to the arm rest, his body shuddering for a moment as if he were reliving the moment. “That’s all happening in less than two minutes. Your entire biology is being ripped apart and replaced by this...venom. There’s no anti-venom since you need it before it takes affect, which is impossible since as soon as the venom gets into your veins, it’s all over. Loose-Mouths, they don’t get their first exposure right away. Some can’t feed for days since they’re battling their own demons. With me, I had a Sire, someone who meant to turn me. He gave me the first draw of blood that saved me from that mental breakdown. The venom changes you, affects the brain, and you’re still dead no matter what. No vampire can turn anyone right away, it takes half of a decade for vampires to develop the gland that makes the venom. A Loose-Mouth who does turn, though, is conscious of what they’re doing. They’re aware of the damage they’re inflicting. Some yearn and live for that chaos that comes with a Sire-less turning. It’s not the venom itself that makes a Loose-Mouth, it’s a Sire who abandons as soon as they turn another.” Realizing how much he told Blair, his eyes widened faintly in surprise. “Bloody Hell, I didn’t meant to rant on, mate. You should talk to Merle or Zeke, though. I encounter the corpses more than the ones running around. Those two have seen them in action.”

“The amount of Loose Mouths lately is alarming. I swear they’re reproducing like rabbits…” Blair sighed and slouched back in her seat, eyes shut. “The Cirque definitely wasn’t like this.”

“From what I know of Loose-Mouths from the autopsies I’ve witnessed, the venom that infects the victim is quick acting. If not properly taken care of post-turning, it can affect the brain.” He said, holding the reports that Mischa had required from the Clinic. “It truly was a sanctuary, but we all need to move on at some point.”
