tadc finale spoilers. i'm not done talking about the circus show.
another thing that deeply frustrates me is the claim that gooseworx took other character's arcs and struggles, ditched them in the finale and gave them to jax... such as zooble's own gender dysphoria, and ragatha having an abusive mother.
my response is that the twist implementation of these traits into jax's characterization does not take it away from the other two-- instead, it serves to emphasize that jax always had people by her side that would've understood her if she just opened up.
all this time jax spent feeling alone when there were other people with the EXACT same struggles she had that she could've relied on but she didn't because she was too afraid to be vulnerable. worst part is that jax KNEW these things about people and chose to use it against them. instead of opening up about having weird Gender Feelings with zooble, an out trans person in the circus, she mocks their dysphoria (ie the "aren't you supposed to be complaining about your ability to change your own body or something?" line). instead of opening up to ragatha about her mom, she mocks her for it (immediately telling her her irl self probably still lives with her mom when they find out they're brain scans).
tldr gooseworx didnt reveal jax is trans + had an abusive mother in the finale bc she didnt feel like exploring those themes with zooble and ragatha anymore oh my god, she did it to drive the point home that jax's self-isolation never made sense. "trying to cope with your struggles by projecting on and lashing out on people with the same struggles is the path towards self-destruction"
A common criticism of modern television is that it feels like shows rely too much on “therapy speak” in their dialogue, as to say that the characters say exactly what they are feeling and why they feel that way. And you see, this sounds like warranted criticism.
Except every single time now that a show uses the “show don’t tell” method of storytelling you get a thousand people who needed information spoonfed to them and because a character isn’t spelling out their exact feelings the audience lacks the critical thinking skills to infer what the character is feeling. Even when a show makes it very obvious what you are supposed to infer from a character’s actions.
And now we have a character who quite literally feels euphoric upon wearing a bow in a feminine manner and people are looking you in the eye and telling you that character isn’t canonically a trans woman. Because if she was she would just say exactly that wouldn’t she????
I've seen a lot of people post-finale criticizing The Amazing Digital Circus for never fully explaining C&A or why they made the virtual world or the brainscanning headsets. But I think it's actually pretty easy to figure out on our own.
Kinger explained pretty much all we needed to know about C&A, which is that they were a company that developed 'Creative AI'. Most people ask "well for what purpose"? Well, most real life AI models are developed by their own companies. I'm pretty sure C&A was just developing AI so that other companies could use it.
Now about the headsets. Kinger pretty much said outright that Scratch was the one who made them, right after mentioning that he had a brain tumor. Even though the headsets simply scan your brain and make a copy of it, I'm still pretty sure that Scratch was actually trying to upload his brain into the program to escape death, and that the unfortunate implication is that he failed before he died in the real world.
And now you're probably asking "why are they both connected to the same program"? I don't think they were supposed to be connected or even related at all. Creative AI development was the main and only goal of C&A, and the brainscanning headsets were just a side project created by one single employee. And Scratch would have needed somewhere to roam around after uploading himself, so he likely chose the program Caine was running in because he already created the circus by that point (it was shown Caine created the Circus seconds after eating the blue AI). As for why they kept scanning the brains of more employees afterwards, I'm not so sure. Maybe Kinger thought it would be interesting to research how Caine interacts with the brainscans? I dunno, maybe I'll think of a better explanation for that later.
Another thing I don't see a lot of people asking is "how did C&A go out of business"? I don't have an interesting answer for that either. I'm pretty sure the implication is just that the AI bubble popped (like it's definitely going to in real life). But it could also be that the company went downhill after Scratch died. Kinger did say he was important to the company.
All of this being said though, I have no idea if any of this is actually canon. But whether or not it is, I'm actually glad that the series never explains it. It was never about how the digital world worked or why it existed, it was about the characters and how they react to being in a digital world. It's the same reason The Truman Show never explains how the Seahaven Island dome works or how it was built. Or why Elden Ring barely explains anything that's going on at all. I know it's frustrating for some people to not get all of the answers, but personally, I love thinking about this kind of stuff. I genuinely prefer these details going unexplained, because it means I still get to have thoughts like this after it's over, which gives the show a lot more staying power in my mind.
Can't believe I'm seeing people actually say that because Gooseworx wrote a character who perpetuates a stereotype that trans women are misogynistic...that she must be an internalized transphobe...and a misogynist.
Like, bro. You are literally admitting that trans women can indeed be misogynistic by making that accusation at all. I'm sorry to break it to you but we're not all perfect little beans. Before I came out, I was DEEPLY misogynistic. I'm willing to bet Goose was too. She's just trying to explore that topic because it's a real thing that happens. Of course it's not EXCUSABLE, but that's exactly why I've since moved on and learned from that time in my life.
This is just a bad take being repeated over and over by insecure chronically online teenagers who think that harassing fiction writers for writing the wrong fiction is how to make change in the world.
Probably gonna delete this post later, I don't know. Just really pissed off right now.
Can the default response to when a trans woman fucks up stop being immediately gangstalking them
I'm seeing a lot of people like "if you don't like TADC The Last Act, it's just because you don't understand the themes and you lack empathy", and also people like "if you like TADC The Last Act, you're an idiot who can't notice even the most glaring of objective flaws", and I'm getting real fed up with both of them. Art is subjective. Just because you personally liked or didn't like it doesn't mean people who disagree with you are stupid. Much less that they're bad people and deserve to be harassed. Stop it. Respect each other.
How did everyone except for me have a horrible time in the movie theater? When I went, my theater was filled with probably the most respectful crowd I've ever seen in a theater in years (though to be fair I haven't been to one in a while). Everyone was quiet and sitting still, and I think there was exactly one kid. Is it just because I live in a relatively small town, or did I just get temporarily teleported to the bizarro dimension?
