You know what the worst part is?
I wouldn’t even have minded if Chadwick lost. There would always be people saying “it’s only bc he died” - and don’t get me wrong even alive Chadwick still deserved the win.
RIZ AHMED AND STEVEN YUEN WERE RIGHT THERE!
Riz literally gave out awards earlier in the show. He learned ASL and professional level drumming and lived with a Deaf family for 8 straight months at an Oscar’s that was full of advertising towards the deaf community - on top of regular acting and physicality training.
This Oscar’s called on Parasite’s wins to say “look how much we appreciate Asian (and particularly Korean) cinema and contributions” - and then left Steven Yuen in the fucking dust.
I’ll admit, I predicted Frances McDormand to win for Best Actress (bc of her Oscar history and role, not even regarding the fact she had the racial advantage).
But with Andra Day, Viola Davis, Riz Ahmed, Steven Yuen, Youn Yuh-jung, Daniel Kaluuya, Leslie Odom Jr., LaKeith Stanfield and of course, Chadwick Boseman all nominated - The Academy had the chance to make history - the first year that all 4 acting categories could have been POC.
I’m a POC film student of course I know that the Academy pulls this shit all the time but I really thought in a tragic year filled with a complete reckoning of racial discrimination in EVERY FACET OF AMERICAN LIFE we’d have a chance.
Youn Yuh-jung was the first Asian actress to win any award since Miyoshi Umeki in 1957. Steven or Riz would have been the first Asian actors to win since 1985 after Haing Ngor who got fucking assassinated for his movie.
And no I’m not mad at Anthony Hopkins (or Frances McDormand) - it wasn’t in his control nor do I think it was disrespectful for and 83-year old man to sit out in an Oscars he probably didn’t think he’d win.
But #OscarsSoWhite strikes again. 💔
