La composizione è una copia romana derivata da un originale greco di Heliodoros, scultore di Rodi attivo intorno al 100 avanti cristo Il dio Pan è intento ad insegnare al pastore Dafni a suonare la siringa, tipico strumento musicale pastorale formato da canne palustri. Nella mitologia greca il dio Pan era una divinità della campagna, dei boschi e dei pascoli, era mezzo uomo e mezzo capra. Un giorno Pan vide la figlia del dio dei fiumi Ladone, di nome Siringa e se ne innamorò. La fanciulla però, come lo vide, fuggì terrorizzata dal suo aspetto sul monte Liceo, per raggiungere le sue sorelle. Queste, per metterla in salvo dalle molestie di Pan, la trasformarono in una canna. Ogni volta che il vento soffiava, l’aria si incanalava nella canna emettendo una musica melodiosa. Il dio Pan, che non sapeva in quale canna si fosse trasformata la fanciulla amata, ne tagliò sette di lunghezze decrescenti e le unì tra loro una di fianco all’altra. Fabbricò così uno strumento musicale che prese il nome di “siringa” dalla sventurata fanciulla e che ai posteri è anche noto come il “flauto di Pan”.
