When we change direction in life, we change our future; we don’t know what it may be, but we can assume that if we decide to have a child or switch majors or move to another city our future will at least contain elements different from what it would have otherwise. But when we change direction in our life we also change our past, because now we see it in a different light, redescribing and reinterpreting it. When our viewpoint shifts and we interpret our past in the light of the present, we rewrite our own story and sometimes even the story of our community and our culture.
