Chapter 6 || Stay
Annie's P.O.V
Over the past few days, Bucky and I have been sneaking out to see each other, before breakfast, after dinner, whenever he isn't training. He tried talking to me about war related things but I wasn't actually paying attention until something caught my attention."Steve wants me to help him destroy HYDRA's bases," He whispered, not looking at the directly at us, the two of us hiding in my tent."I-I'm sorry, come again?" Blinking a few times, wanting to know if I heard him correctly."Steve wants me to go back out there, but this time, there isn't as much of risk as there was when I was in that big group. But, I leave tomorrow afternoon, we need to go as soon as possible." Bringing himself to look at me."Do you want to go?" Running a hand through my hair and turning to face him on my bed."Ever since I met him, I thought it was my duty to protect him, I still like to believe that it is. So yes, I would like to go with him, I just wanted to tell you." "So, let's get this straight, you leave for a month after our first date, come back barely alive, and you want to go back out again so you can protect your friend?" He nodded his head, he knew the wheels in my head were turning millions of miles per hour, he knew I was going to get angry about this. But the thing was he knew that I knew that he didn't care. Steve was his best friend, just like Peggy was mine and he knew that I would do the same thing he wants to do right now. So I suppressed my anger towards him leaving again, and focused on the bright side. Less of a risk, and would be back in a few days, Steve knows what to expect, Bucky wants to come back as soon as possible. I could do this."I'm assuming you don't need or want my permission?" Smiling a little bit to lighten the mood.He smiled back and kissed my forehead, "When I get back, you and me, we're going to a real restaurant, not the pizza place.""You're a real smooth talker Barnes," I looked at my clock and saw that he had to go to gun practice.I stood up and held out my hand, he gladly took it and we secretly crept out of the tent and took the back ways to his practice. Just a few feet away, we went our separate ways and didn't meet back up until the next morning.//(I know the things are getting annoying, but I promise it's going to get better, I and a friend have this all planned out. These chapters aren't that important, it's just building character and relationship development)Bucky and I said out goodbye's in his tent as Steve was outside, getting himself ready and making sure that no one would walk in on the two of us. After I practically cried when he hugged my goodbye, he kissed me one last time before exiting the tent and joining Steve to one of the cars that they were going to use.I left the tent 5 minutes later so no one would suspect anything and walked over to Peggy who just said her goodbye's to Steve. The thing with their relationship is that neither one of them wants to be the first one to say that they have feelings towards each other. So it's like running in place, they're both getting nowhere. Peggy put an arm around me once the boys and their friends were out of sight, and we both walked to lunch.// (Another time jump, sorry, and this is the second to last one omg)A few days went by and no one has heard from any of the men that followed Steve, including Bucky. But I knew something happened, and I hope it didn't happen to Bucky. I find it so funny how people fall in love so fast, for me, I think it was the day I met Bucky, I didn't even know it then. If anything happened to him, he wouldn't know that I loved him. I was sitting on my chair next to Colonel Phillips, we both loved reading so it was very easy to talk to him about the books I've read over the past weeks. I heard footsteps approaching, so obviously I looked up and saw that Steve was here, with Peggy! I grinned and stood up giving Steve a big hug, thanking God that he was okay.But, he didn't return the hug, and he didn't smile."Steve, what's wrong?" I asked, heart rate speeding up, my face falling."I'm so sorry, Annie." He told me, his head hung low.I instantly knew what he was talking about.I backed up, retracting my arms from him. Colonel Phillips stood up waiting to hear what happened, but I knew already, "No..." I whispered, eyes welling up with tears, making it unable to see 2 feet in front of me."Annie, I'm so sorry, I had him, I swear I did. But he slipped right through my fingers." He tried explaining but I was already so angry.Anger consumed me, it never affected me this hard this way before. Tears came down my face as I squatted down, curling up into a ball."No!" I shouted, getting angrier by the second."Annie, there was nothing that Steve could do." Peggy crouched next to me, trying to get me to understand, but he let him die! I stood up, rage very apparent in my eyes, things in my vision turning red."You let him die!" I walked over to Steve and punched him right in the face, almost knocking him down."Colonel Machiavelli, stand down!" Phillips yelled at me, but my head was already clouded.He let him die!"I loved him, Steve! I loved him so much, and you just let him die!" Shouting and punching him again, but he just stood there and took it, tears even running down his face.Phillips grabbed my arms, trying to get me to stop, but I kicked his shin, probably breaking it and jumped on Steve, pushing him down to the ground."You," Punch, "Let," Punch, "Him," Punch, "Die!" One more."Annie get off of him! He didn't let James die! It wasn't his fault!" Peggy shouted at me.How could she! Was she on his side?"It was his fault, Peggy! It was his fault that I never got to let him know how I feel about him, to tell him that I loved him!" I stood up, making my way towards her.But before I could do anything to my best friend, blackness clouded over me and I passed out, falling hard to the ground.I loved him...~Steve's P.O.VIt was my fault, I could have swung him up into the cart, I could have saved him. She was right. I let him die."What are you going to do with her?" My voice cracked, and honestly, I didn't want to know the answer."We'll tell you, but we need to tell you something more important first. The truth about you being the first super soldier is sort of a lie. Annabelle, or as you call her Annie, was the first test, and it was successful. She had brittle bone, she was 5'2, but she was still one of our best agents. She worked directly alongside Peggy so she has the exact training, maybe even better."Why would they lie about this?"Since she is a threat now that she is angry and broken, we have to do something about it. We don't want to kill her because she means a lot to us all, helped us through our own dark times. So we are going to preserve her, this just happens to be another experiment as well. We're going to put her in a cryogenic chamber for safe keeping until someone needs her in the future. Hopefully, the world will be a better place where she won't be needed, but if she is, she'll be ready. I feel as if it would be best if we do this now, the shot will wear off in a few hours, so we better move fast.""You can't do that," Peggy told him, angry."Peg, he can, we can't stop him," I told her, wrapping her in my arms."She's my best friend Steve, she just lost her first love, she has the right to be angry!" She yelled into my chest."I know, I know." I just hugged her for what felt like hours, this couldn't be happening.
