Hey, I'm interested in applying, but wouldn't really be interested in starting (if successful) until more players have been 'cast'. Is this something you would allow?

Hello! We’re so glad that you’re interested in applying.

We’ll hopefully be starting with a semi-full cast--we’re definitely looking to see almost every character applied for before beginning acceptances--so if that’s your concern, then I don’t think we’ll have a problem! No matter what, though, once we accept and begin in-game interactions, you’ll be subject to the usual activity guidelines.

Do we have to have seen the show that the the great departure is based off of?

Hey there! Awesome question. You absolutely do not have to have seen nor read The Leftovers in order to join this group. Everything you need to know is listed in the FULL PLOT and the EXTRA INFO, and we encourage you to let us know if there’s anything that isn’t clear so we can try to explain more thoroughly! 

If you’d like a better idea as far as the atmosphere we’re trying to create, though, I’d be more than happy to link you to a few clips/articles. In the end, although we’re drawing inspiration from this world, we’re here to make it our own.

Any job recommendations?

Plenty! While we’d love to see many different jobs around Lima, and it’s difficult to gauge what might be most interesting without knowing the character in mind, I think it’d be particularly interesting to see:

Police officers

Childcare workers

Healthcare workers

Funeral director 

Essentially, we’d love to see anything that might broaden your opportunity for connections. Although we pre-determined a few relations in each of the bios, in a small group like this, we feel it’s very important to make sure every character has a dynamic relationship with everyone else!

After some deliberation, Admin Jana and I have decided to add Sebastian Smythe and Mercedes Jones to our first batch of characters! We’ve also made small changes to the biographies of Jesse St. James and Sam Evans. We’re incredibly excited for the plot opportunities they bring to the table as well as seeing what great things you all have in mind to help bring them to life.

MERCEDES JONES

BASIC BREAKDOWN

Although Mercedes had once had big dreams of LA and her own recording studio and a name as prominent as Adele’s, falling in love with Michael had been enough for her to put her own plans on the back burner. Not forever, but long enough for him to finish his Master’s degree, but that didn’t stop them from rushing to start their family. Married at 20, Michael wanted kids but Mercedes was insistent upon waiting, terrified that having a baby so early might strain their marriage or delay her career even more. When she got pregnant, however, she chose to keep the baby no matter the implications. She took The Departure very hard for a multitude of reasons. Michael Departed and, given that he’d had their child, Mercedes was quick to assume that he was gone as well. The following weeks were a cloud of confusion, and for the first time, Mercedes didn’t feel like she could turn to the one consistent source of support in her life--God. After all, she’d been left behind, so. 

Feeling vulnerable and alone, Mercedes was one of the few in Lima who had been recruited to join the Guilty Remnant, a cult designed to be “Living Reminders” of the Departure. The group was strict--no talking, must wear white, must exercise extreme discipline. It gave Mercedes something new to believe in and guidance in the wake of losing her family. Only when she realized that the Guilty Remnant was planning attacks on Lima did she have an awakening, so to speak, and realized that the sacrifices that she made on behalf of the cult were detrimental and only preventing both herself and the town from moving on from The Departure. Although she remains an active part, she’s recently started serving as a spy/liaison between the Guilty Remnant and the police to ensure that everyone is safe. 

Now that she’s slowly re-entering the world, Mercedes has taken notice of a few things. Specifically, the child that Jesse St. James has adopted. Although she’s keeping her distance, she’s done enough research to have her suspicions that that might be her son, despite the fact that she thought he’d departed. She has yet to say anything, but Mercedes has matured a lot, and she thinks she’s now ready for motherhood. Unfortunately, the situation is not black and white.

BASIC BREAKDOWN

Sebastian Smythe never did emotions. Not because he didn’t have them but because he felt like he didn’t have time for them, not when he had more important things to tend to like his career and his reputation, but. Meeting Hunter Clarington made his world feel like it was shifting, just a little, and suddenly he was willing to make the necessary exceptions. They’d been dating a year when Hunter told him he loved him, and Sebastian hadn’t been ready to hear those words, so the following night he went out to one of his old clubs, picked up a stranger, and cheated. By the next morning, he realized he loved Hunter, too, but it was too late. The two of them broke up a week before The Departure, which took Hunter before Sebastian had the chance to make things right.

Sebastian had never been a spiritual man, but being left behind while the two people he felt had the most goodness in them were gone made him question a lot about who he was as a person. After a three month break in Paris, Sebastian took a job stationed back in Lima for the Department of Sudden Departures. His job is to conduct a lengthy interview process with all those who have reported a departed family member and to investigate counts of Departure fraud for the entirety of Northwest Ohio. It’s not much, but it’s helpful, and Sebastian feels like he can do a little bit of redemption by trying to help researchers find answers.

After interviewing Sam Evans about the disappearance of his twin siblings, Sebastian found himself striking up a friendship with the man. He’s very rarely the rational voice in a situation but he can see how broken Sam is, and he’s admittedly worried. Sebastian has never been very good at being supportive, but he’s trying his best.

It’s a possibility! While we currently have a set of characters in mind for our second batch (though they won’t be released until we have an established group), it’s subject to change as we get closer to that plot drop. There are only a few characters in that round that are set in stone--the rest will be determined by interest. This inquiry is definitely noted, though!

Having rekindled his relationship with Rachel when she moved to New York, the two of them struck up a five year plan: in addition to progressing their respective careers, they wanted to get married and start a family. They loved each other. It was time. They were forced to stray from their plan, however, when one of Rachel’s dads got sick and she felt obligated to move back to Lima to help take care of him. Jesse followed. The Departure happened three months after they settled in, and although Rachel disappeared, Jesse still felt it was his duty to stay and help take care of her father, forever holding out hope that she may reappear.

When The Departure happened, Jesse was picking up coffee at The Lima Bean. In all of the confusion, he noticed a baby, now parentless, abandoned in a stroller. Knowing he couldn’t simply leave the child, Jesse picked them up and spent the next couple of days attempting to find a family member. When he failed, he adopted the baby, hoping that being responsible for a child might help fill whatever hole Rachel’s disappearance had left. What he doesn’t yet know is that the son he’s taken in actually belongs to Mercedes Jones, who has her suspicions but has thus far kept her distance.

Jesse has developed an unlikely friendship with Quinn Fabray. When he found himself in over his head with a child he wasn’t prepared for and still in mourning, she stepped in to help. They spend most days together.

Jacob lost his entire immediate family in The Departure. After spending a few months back in his hometown of Pittsburgh to try and regain some footing, he decided to use what little information he had about his half-brother, Noah Puckerman, to see if he could find him. He managed to track Noah down to Lima, Ohio, and made the move approximately three months ago.

Although he wants to connect with his family, Jacob’s been hesitant to tell Noah who he is. Until he gets the courage, he’s just trying to befriend him, because some kind of connection is better than none at all.

Unsure how to fit in such a small town, especially one coping with a tragedy, he hasn’t made many friends. One person Jacob has connected with, however, is Jane Hayward, who’s dealing with being on the outskirts as well. Perhaps it’s because she’s really his only true friend in town, but the fact that he’s been helping Jane try and win back her ex bothers him. A lot.

SAMUEL EVANS

BASIC BREAKDOWN

Sam has spent the better part of his life working to provide for his family--in particular, his siblings. All he ever wanted to do was make sure they had a good life once their father lost his job. So, for three years, he busted his ass, sacrificing his own happiness for the sake of theirs. He lost his siblings in The Departure and, in the wake of it all, lost his sense of purpose.

Now, no longer needing to work but feeling as if he’d missed his opportunity to make something of himself, Sam’s life is a wreck. He’s still working menial jobs, but now he’s spending his paychecks on alcohol to try and numb the pain of losing the two most important people in his life.

He’s started to have one too many run-ins with Kitty Wilde, who also seems to be going off the deep end, except part of him feels like he needs to keep an eye on her. Together, the two of them keep getting into trouble. To balance her out, though, Sebastian Smythe has been fighting to get through to Sam in an attempt to bring him back to reality. Although he’s resistant, Sebastian may very well be the thing that saves him.
