I was looking at this last night and wanted to point something out:

Look at the poor quality of their sample garment. You can see it in the OP picture, as well; look at how the banding connects. If that is what their sample looks like and what their product pictures look like, I have no doubt that the pattern itself could have some serious issues.

Take this pattern with a huge, huge grain of salt.

Christine got home and saw that I posted this and said: “You can tell they photoshopped the harness and wings on.”

“Wanna bet they did?” I said.

So I googled: “tattooed man beard grey”

We found a stock photo of the exact same guy on page 1 of Google images.

Going off that image, we searched by model and found the exact photo they used here.

While there’s nothing inherently wrong with using stock models, I do take serious issue with patterns misrepresenting their products by, you know, photoshopping them. It’s a product image. Product images have an obligation to fairly represent the actual product.

I think this is true when it comes to big corporation run cons and a little less true when it comes to the smaller fan-run cons. What do you think?

Another set of my Scizor Gijinka photos from ACEN! My favorite parts about Scizor are the head piece, the wings, the claws and the stompy feet. That’s what I tried to capture in my Gijinka. Plus I wanted Scizor to look like a badass motorcycle chick….and this is the result. Yup. Made almost entirely from craft foam.

Pokemon belongs to Game Freak/Nintendo. This costume was just made for funsies and not for profit.

Embossing Tutorial for Raised Designs on Fabric

While working on this year’s AN costume, I found a raised design. Applique might have worked, with a thicker fabric, but it seemed more embossed, so here’s my solution for adding some depth!

Take your pattern, and sketch the design you’d like to emboss on it. Trace the new design onto a new template.

Transfer your design to a piece of foam. One layer is probably enough, but if you need more height, cut more layers.

Check your foam layer against your garment to make sure it fits as you’d like.

Sandwich that foam between two layers of fabric. I’ve cut two layers of the original pattern piece for this, but you could probably make patches if your design is small and far from seams. Pin it in place so it doesn’t shift while you sew.

Start sewing the two pieces of fabric around your foam. Try and be snug. You’re probably going to want to hand-stitch this if your design is more complex than straight lines. Here’s my design in-progress, with the holes still open.

The effect will look different on different fabrics. I’d recommend at least one fabric be with out stretch, because the foam will not stretch. Also, the thicker your fabric, or more textured, the less noticeable your foam layer will be, and may need bulking up to compensate.

This sort of embossing hasn’t come up often for me, but hopefully this will help someone else!

So this weekend was my first ever Tidewater Comic Con visit! I’ve always heard about it but never stopped by, apparently the turnout for people today was at a all time high! The line was huge! I cosplayed as Asriel for the first time ever (I didn’t even know how it was going to look like until the day of) and I was extremely happy with how it turned out.

I wouldn’t have gotten nearly as far if it wasn’t for the help of my many friends who spent the time teaching me how to do basically everything (Makeup, cosplay tips, etc). I never would have been able to do it if it weren’t for their help. So this post is to thank everyone who contributed, I really mean it. Also I got to take pictures with the legendary Vaping Toriel (aka @g0atm0m) and Mettaton (aka @rnigrane)! Overall, very good con experience, and I still have a day left to go!

Cosplay PSA

If you find a cosplayer’s personal Facebook page and send them a Friend Request, don’t be angry at them if they don’t accept it.

There’s a reason a lot of us use aliases and have active cosplay social media accounts. It helps us control our cosplay lives and keep some semblance of privacy in our personal lives.

Some cosplayers are cool with it and will accept anyone’s Request. Others aren’t comfortable Friending people they haven’t met, been introduced to, or regularly talk to. Some keep their pages strictly for their family or professional relationships. Don’t get angry over their decisions about how public they choose to be.
