It’s like that!
How to treat others with respect online. It’s easy. #bekind
How can we make sure we're always treating other people with respect online? Well for me, I like to use a bit of an exercise. I like to ask myself, "well how do I want to be defined in just three words?" If you do it yourself, your three words are probably the values that are the most important to you. If you live by those values online there's a really good chance it's going to mean you're treating other people with respect. For me, my three words would be "open-minded," I'm using that as one word, "helpful," and "empathetic." For example, if I saw a photo online and I catch myself being really closed-minded that's a moment where I can check myself and think "wait, I don't want to be defined as someone who is going to judge others based on their appearance." Sometimes it's a matter of being able to check ourselves and that's a great way to make sure we're treating other people with respect.
Words.

Why is Spiderman so unique??
Sometimes people feel like they can get away with being extra harsh online because, I suppose, there's a sense of power that comes from being behind screen, but for anyone who has seen Spiderman, you'll know "with great power comes great responsibility." While there is that power to be extra negative and extra harsh online, we can also use that power to shut down hate if we see it happen, or challenge people whose behaviour we know is really, really wrong.
What is your online reputation?
It's important to remember our online reputation isn't removed from our offline reputation. In fact, its just an extension so we need to decide what type of people we want to be, how we want to make the people around us feel and also the type of values that we want to live by. That's going to be directly reflected through the way we interact with others online.
Aspire to inspire!
What is digital citizenship?
The term digital citizenship is a term that's been thrown around so much, but really what we're talking about is, digital are just regular people accessing the online world. So being a good digital citizen is essentially just being a good person, [00:00:30] and being aware of the way we're treating others, and the way that our actions are going to impact those people online.

Positive social media use = Positive self esteem...
The way that you use social media definitely has an impact on the way that you feel about yourself. There are some people out there, who spend day after day looking at photos and looking at posts, without actually contributing comments or contributing posts of their own. While there's nothing wrong with that, it can create a really massive sense of isolation, that you're watching the world go on without you. You're watching people lead these fantastic lives, which are actually a bit of a highlight reel. You feel like you're not part of it. It can create some really unhealthy comparisons.
I know this guy, and he has the hots for a longtime friend. She got really popular online and they drifted apart. He stressed about it for three years but finally today they connected again.
So what make him freak out?
Her Instagram.
He reckoned a girl with that many followers would never be interested in him. He let her own social media habits erode his own self esteem. It got me thinking...
How can we manage social media use so that it’s positive for everyone?
And how can we tell when social media use is affecting us and our relationships in a negative way?
There can be challenges when you're posting your own content, as well. That's where it's really important that your intentions you're aware of. If you're posting a photo of yourself with an expectation that people are going to affirm you and validate you and tell you that you're beautiful, that can be a really fragile, vulnerable position to be in because if people don't affirm you, or if they actually hate on you, then you're going to be worse off than before you were when you posted the photo. Then if your intentions are really positive and they're to affirm others or make other people feel cool about how they are, then every like and every comment is only going to be a positive thing, if that makes sense. You're not going to be as fragile and waiting for likes and follows as well.
I think that self esteem is a really interesting construct because people conceive of it, in all different ways. Some people think that it’s about the amount that you like yourself. Some people think it’s the amount you respect yourself. The way I see it, it is your general attitude towards yourself. How much do you think you’re worth as a person? I’m not talking about dollars and cents. I mean, what kind of value do you attach to who you are. That kind of thing.
Have you asked yourself what you’re worth?
Random followers on Social Media - Good or bad?
I find it really strange that we tend to equate the number of followers that someone has on Instagram or Twitter or whatever with a real life offline view of success and happiness. When you think about it, it's quite strange to have lots and lots of people following you that you actually don't know offline. Would you ever take a photo of yourself and your friends and print it out and go up to random people on the street, like some old car standing by his car, and be like, "Hey, do you like my photo?" That's kind of creepy when you think about it. Having heaps and heaps of randoms, that you don't know, following you on social media is kind of the same thing.
Stand up and be unique.
What is the difference between high self esteem and positive self esteem
Maintaining a positive and healthy balance when it comes to self esteem is so important. I think that there's this real emphasis in Western Culture, so in countries like Australia, the United States, the UK, and New Zealand, there's a real emphasis on getting high self esteem. This idea that we all have to be super confident in who we are and in our abilities. Actually, that can be quite problematic too. There's a body of research that suggests that really high self esteem can cause problems, but positive and healthy and realistic self esteem is so important. There's this idea that having compassion towards ourselves rather than just thinking that we're awesome is the most important thing.
Morning run... Fresh frost, numb face!
To be honest, I think we all have times where we spend a lot more of our day looking at photos online, instead of posting them. We're looking at what people are doing and that kind of idea that you're watching the world can mean that you're really separate from it. It can mean that you feel like you're not part of it. Instead, you're witnessing all of these other people having amazing times, doing amazing things, and you're sitting there thinking, "What about me? Where do I fit?
