Seeing the obituary of John Hodowanic, a former president of the World Press Institute, sent me looking through our collection of WPI photos. I came across these photos, which I don’t think I had seen before, of the WPI Fellows meeting with Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport. The news clipping is from the student newspaper, The Mac Weekly, from Friday November 17, 1961.

WPI was established at Macalester College in 1961, with the goal of bringing young journalists from around the world to the United States, to learn about not only American life, but also journalism in a democratic society. Journalists attended classes about U.S. history, politics, government, etc., and were guest speakers and gave seminars for Macalester students. WPI journalists also traveled and interned at media outlets around the country.

While WPI is no longer housed at Macalester, its work does still continue today.

Chris Sale is sorry he got suspended. And he's sorry to his teammates and to fans that came to see him pitch. But he's not sorry to the White Sox fans who came to see the team play in 1976 jerseys and came specifically for the promo. Some fans bought tickets and made plans months in advance to see the game and its uniforms. All before anyone knew who the starting pitcher could be. Makes it pretty clear who’s important here. And from what he’s said, it’s not the fans who bought tickets and drove 100s of miles to have a fun night of baseball. At no point has he expressed regret or apologized to the fans that showed up not caring what place the team was in, what the weather was going to be or who the starting pitcher was. The types of fans that just cared about having some fun with their favorite team. Now they have a promo giveaway of their favorite jersey from their childhood, and a memory of a player that made the night all about him. Some, like the family that sat behind me, had kids attending their 1st game at the Cell and got a lesson in being a prima donna. Being mad about him blowing a promotion a lot of people put a lot of time and effort into attending (and for the staff putting on) isn't blowing things out or proportion. Cutting up a bunch of jerseys so you don't have to pitch in them is.
