OK, so, Tumblr un-deleted my account within days of the sale to Automattic/Wordpress.com. Whee. I see they killed my banner, which was NSFW, as well as my avatar, which was literally just my smile. I guess smiling while posting NSFW stuff is itself NSFW in these parts now.

Unfortunately, since they took 7 months to undelete me following my problem report, I already learned the lesson that proprietary social media only allow free expression while trying to grow their businesses. And remember that Pride Month isn’t just about the fun. It is also a time to remember, educate yourself and show respect for the tens of thousands of men & women who paved the way, fought for equality and rights, died for these rights. It is a time to remember than trans people started the movement at Stonewall. Is it a time to show respect for those who are older and what they experienced as younger gay, bi, lesbian and trans youth. 

Pride is not just a party. Many celebrate it is as a party, and I don’t blame them. I celebrate it too.

What is forgotten is how we are in a place to be out and seen. And to know that this is not possible in every city, be it in the US or in the world. People are still being beaten, jailed, murdered because of who they are, it will happen today, we likely won’t read about it in the news.

As you acknowledge Pride keep in mind that those “old guys” are the ones who lived thru the hell. They survived AIDS. As recently as the 80s AIDS, even in the USofA, was considered a gay disease. AIDS was widely considered “our fault”, “God’s way”, that we earned it and deserved it. AIDS was not being addressed by the government. Ask any gay man over 60 and he will tell you about his friends, buddies & lovers who died of AIDS. That is ANY gay man over 60, he has lost people dear to him to AIDS, and nothing was done about it.

Respect our elders. 

I know it is common to see these older men as “creepy” or “gross”, to shun them and treat them like they don’t belong. Granted there are some creepy old men, learning at younger guys, behaving poorly. But that is not the majority. These men were once our ages, young, fit, healthy and handsome. And they fought for our rights.

Pride Month is a gift, earned by tens of thousands who died because of their sexuality. Our opportunity to celebrate who we are had a price.

Happy PRIDE month guys! Continue to fight for the rights of equality. Vote, seriously. Yes I am bringing up politics but it is so fucking important to vote for representatives who will stand up to the bigots and hate mongers. Our rights are being taken away across the country by people who hate us. Use your voice, use the pen, use typing, show up and stand against those who are working to shame us, hurt us and murder us. 

And be proud of who you are!!

Hell, I'm not even 50 yet and I stopped being able to handle wakes and funerals by the time I was about 23. There's a reason I never developed the love of rectum that most other gay men seem to have; in addition to just being all-around gross to me, anal sex was the one and only universal common factor among every single death among my friends and lovers during those formative years.

Pride was always a completely political thing for me as a result. Sure, I went with my friends to the inevitable leather parties that happened the night before and after NYC pride (back when I could stand NYC), but the reason I was down there in the first place was to walk down a long, hot street chanting the usual ”homophobia's got to go” stuff. Because in the age of Reagan, we weren't merely denied funding for research into the disease that killed our loved ones, we were treated like the disease ourselves. My first boyfriend died of AIDS, and while I've never been HIV positive, his family blamed me for his death.

So go out and celebrate, but remember that there's a reason we're celebrating... and more reason to get political than there's been in decades, too.

Well... glad it’s not just me, at least.

Yesterday and again this morning, I got 5 or 6 “recommended for you” blog posts that were all hopelessly generic lowest-common-denominator (and, of course, utterly non-sexual) garbage, plus two sets of “recommended for you” blogs, before a single post from any of my subs ever appeared, erotic or otherwise.

I’m thinking Verizon saw the Tumblr userbase when angling to buy Yahoo and started salivating, and now that the deal is done and they have access to said userbase, they’re just now realizing most of us are here solely for dirty pictures, barely even see the ads and other non-pr0n content they keep shoving in our faces because there are no boobies or dicks in it, and are trying to figure out how to salvage some of us into good, credulous, and above all, marketable consumers of inoffensive, generic content. “Yay I love kittens!” “Check out where I went on holiday!” “Wow your brunch looks fantastic!”

I’d be pretty surprised if any of us were still here on Tumblr a year from now. They haven’t changed the terms yet, but between this worsening phenomenon and the now-mandatory and pernicious “safe mode”, it seems like the writing is on the wall. It’s too bad, but I moved from Yahoo Groups to Tumblr for most of my pr0n fix several years ago, and I’m sure there’ll be another venue for uncensored user-sourced pics and videos, hopefully one that has nothing to do with either Yahoo or Verizon. Pornhub seems to want to be where orphaned controversial content winds up, so maybe it’ll be there.

Apart from the ”organize your own group” thing (are most boys really organizers? When you do finally take the plunge, make damn sure you trust your bondage top, and that your trust is warranted.
