We need a doctor - Jack&Martha
"Right," Jack reassured Martha with her own idea. She wasn’t wrong in wanting to keep an eye on things, and it was smart to add an extra layer of protection onto the grocery store. Especially in a time like this when all the food was next to gone and people were disappearing. There was so much that was happening and the fact that he couldn’t do anything to stop it only made the captain feel that much worse about himself. Of course he wasn’t going to let anyone see this side of him, at least not all of it.
What Martha got was only the surface, something that Jack could have faked to get what he wanted if he so chose. But this wasn’t fake, and Jack would never manipulate Martha in such a way, at least not on purpose. But when he looked up, he saw that the little glimpse of himself that he’d shown her had affected her greatly. It was in this moment that Jack had wished that John was still there, because John had served not only as an exceptional lover, but someone he could actually confide into and would understand.
But having Martha there was definitely not unwelcome. Smiling at her as she sat next to him, he leaned into her side-hug before ducking his head and nodding. “But I do Martha. If I’m feeling this helpless the Doctor…” letting out a shattered sigh, Jack shook his head slowly. “The Doctor must feel absolutely insane right now.” Setting his lips into a thin line, Jack silently nodded in agreement to Martha’s question.
"Saving the world one half-baked plan at a time. At least we’re good looking." Jack lifted his head and grinned at her. "We’ll be fine as long as we have the Doctor, we’ll always be fine." Jack said it aloud so that he could reassure himself as much as he could reassure Martha. He just hoped that the time lord was still in the Pocket and hadn’t disappeared like so many others have already.
Martha frowned and pressed her lips together, keeping her arm firmly secured around Jack's waist. "Now you listen to me, Jack Harkness," she said firmly, probably more firmly than she has anything some she walked into the hub. "None of this is your fault. You're doing what you can and probably even more than that. I know that, I know the rest of the team knows that. The Doctor knows that." She reached across with her other arm to place over his arm. "I cannot let you beat yourself up over something that is out of your control."
Martha knew that it probably wouldn't do a lot of good telling Jack not to beat himself up but she couldn't not say it. The truth was, she undersold where he was coming from and she'd worried how the Doctor might be too, especially since he had been pretty quiet besides offering to come help at the hospital.
With a faint laugh, she gave another nod. "We'll always have that," she agreed with a wink before leaning her head against his shoulder again with a sigh. "Exactly. We still have the Doctor, we still have each other, and we will get through this just like we always do."
