Viktorโs head swam as he looked at the notebook in front of him. His notes, already difficult to read thanks to his messy cursive writing, blurred together. His eyelids drooped, and he settled his head in the crook of his elbow.
Iโll just lay my head down for a moment. No harm.
Moonlight shone in through the lab windows, and there was no doubt everyone else nearby was asleep. This late at night, even Viktor would typically be in bed; then again, he had been running himself ragged recently.ย
His eyes fluttered open after a long moment and he groaned, a throbbing pain making itself known in his knee. He stretched his leg out underneath the table, but he knew there was no use. He was awake for good now, and he might as well get back to work. His mind was still hazy, his vision fuzzy, but sleep felt miles away. Perhaps another hour or so would bring him to some sort of epiphany, he thought with a dry chuckle.
He picked up his pen, fingers trembling from exhaustion, and began to let his mind wander. When he came to again and looked away from the window, he found yet another drawing of the Hexcore leering at him from the corner of the page. It had been lingering in his mind lately, taunting him tirelesslyโ he knew he was close to uncovering something, and yet, at the same time, it felt like success had never been further away.ย
His motivation dashed, Viktorโs shoulders slumped again, and he let the pen fall from between his fingers. His eyelids fluttered shut, and, though he heard footsteps from the hall, he paid them no mind. He stretched out his legs, grimacing when his right knee ached in protest. He couldnโt bring himself to walk to his bedroom now, not at this time of night and especially not with his bad leg already acting up. Instead, he laid his head down on his crossed arms with a soft sigh.
He was just about to doze off when he felt his notebook being tugged out from underneath his arms, and he let out a grumble and looked up with a groggy glare. Jayce stood above him, and, quite frankly, Viktor wanted to smack that unbearably fond smile off of his face. It was far too late for sentimentality.
โI told you that you were going to work yourself into the ground. And did you listen? No, of course you didnโt.โ
Viktor managed nothing more than an exasperated grunt in response, burying his face in the crook of his neck. Leave it to Jayce to disturb him right as he was drifting off. And to have the audacity to tease him? The man was insufferable.
Footsteps shuffled about the lab, and Viktor basked in the almost-silence for a long few minutes. As his body relaxed, he felt Jayce drape a blanket over his shoulders. If heโd been a little more coherent, he might have thanked him. In his half-asleep state, though, he just mumbled incoherently and drifted offโ
โViktor?โ
That jolted him awake. His eyes widened as he sat bolt upright, almost scattering the books beneath him to the floor. He squinted, the bright library light a stark contrast from the dim moonlight cast through the labโs windows, and tried to recognize the figure standing in front of him.
Jayce.ย
Damn it all. He must have fallen asleep studying, and, evidently, the dreams were back in full force. Viktor had almost dared to hope that those were gone for good.
โSorry for startling you,โ Jayce went on, and Viktor made a desperate attempt to root himself back in reality. โYou said you had an idea for the project?โ
Viktor blanched. Had he said that? He must have, considering the sketches in his notebook. โUhโ yes, I did.โ He stammered, looking down to find that, startlingly, the Hexcore was nowhere to be found. Exceptโ
His own thoughts were confusing him now. He had no idea what a Hexcore was, and yet, here he was expecting a drawing of one to pop up in his notes. Perhaps he really was losing it this time.
Luckily, Jayce sat down across from him, and Viktor busied himself collecting his notes. He breathed out a small sigh of relief when he saw them; his mind seemed to narrow down to the science and engineering of his project, pushing out all thoughts of the lab and the Hexcore and Jayceโs stupid, infuriating, adorable expressions.
โRight, soโฆ Zaun does not have good air quality. Everyone has known that for years now, and yet, no one has done anything about it.โ Viktor explained, turning his notebook towards Jayce. The sketches were messy, as if he had been falling asleep while drawing (he had). Even so, they seemed to pique Jayceโs attention. โWe could easily create small air filters or purifiers. The difficult part would beโโ
โDistributing them,โ Jayce finished for him, running his fingertips along the messy sketch lines. โHow many people live in Zaun? Thereโs no way we could get one to every house. Not to mention businesses, and government buildingsโฆ itโd be impossible.โ
Viktorโs knee protested greatly when he leaned across the table, but he ignored it in favor of flipping to yet another sketch: this one of a similar air filtration system, but much larger. โExactly. So, either we make hundreds of thousands of small purifiersโฆ or we make a few large ones.โ
Jayce hummed, running a hand through his hair. โWe could make that work. And, realistically, weโd only have to make one for the project.โ
โFor the project, right.โ Viktor conceded with a nod. He had almost forgotten that some people had not been physically affected by the shitty air quality in Zaun for their entire lives. Of course Jayce would be less passionate. โBut we would only have to make a few to actually make a difference.โ
Jayce flipped between the two notebook pages with a nod, leaning back in his chair. โI think we could pull this off.โ
โI do, too.โ
Looking up from the notebook, Jayce offered him a grin. โWeโve got our idea, then. I think that earned us some lunch, donโt you think?โ
Viktor just blinked, having almost forgotten that it was early afternoon and not late evening. The effect those damn dreams were having on him was really starting to make itself known now, and it was beginning to grate on his nerves.
The hesitation seemed to make Jayce nervous, and he was quick to reassure, โif you donโt want to, we donโt have to. I just thought it would be a nice break. I mean, you look like youโre working yourself way too hard.โ
That made Viktor wince, and he brushed back a lock of hair that had fallen loose during his impromptu nap. He was sure he probably did look like shit, but that didnโt mean he wanted to hear it. โNo, no, I justโฆ no. Lunch would be great.โ
โGreat,โ Jayce echoed, reaching down to pick up his bag. He slung it over his shoulder, then handed Viktor his notebook once he was up and leaning against his cane. โThe Last Bite?โ
โThe Lastโ sorry, what?โ
โDude, youโve never been to The Last Bite?โ Jayce questioned with a laugh, his eyebrows raising. โWe have to go now. Theyโve got the best burger in the city, hands-down. Besides, a friend of mine works there.โ
Well, Viktor couldnโt argue with that logic. Itโs not like he had any better ideas. โLead the way, then.โ
Thankfully, the diner was only a block or so away from the campus. Viktor was doing his best ignoring the ache in his leg, but it only pained him more the farther they walked. Jayce was good at idle chit-chat, at least, even if Viktor struggled to understand the appeal.
He sank down into his seat with a silent sigh of relief when they made it to a booth near the window. The diner was old and smelled of grease, but in that sort of way that meant Viktor was probably about to have one of the best meals of his life.
Jayce didnโt even bother to look at a menu, too occupied greeting the waitress that approached them. She was slightly familiar, and Viktor realized that he had probably seen her around campus. Not to mention, there was no doubt he would remember seeing that bright magenta hair.
She leaned against the booth with a nod at Jayce, raising her eyebrows when she noticed Viktor across from him. โWhoโs this? Did you finally find yourself a date? Iโve been waiting, you knowโโ
โNo. No, no,โ Jayce was quick to deny, his awkward laugh filling the silence that fell between them. The waitress raised a disbelieving brow, but Jayce shook his head insistently. โThis is Viktor. Weโre working on a project together for physics.โ
She just hummed, shooting Jayce a look that screamed โIโm onto you.โ When she turned back to Viktor, she offered him a wave. โIโm Vi.โ
โNice to meet you.โ Viktor responded, then hurried to look at the menu. Nothing really stood out to himโ he didnโt have much of an appetite todayโ so, when she asked for his order, he just asked for whatever Jayce was having.
Hopefully the other man had good taste.
Their food came quickly, and Viktor was content to eat in silence. Jayce seemed to feel the exact opposite, of course, and he easily brought the conversation back to their project. At least that was familiar territory.
โSo, you didnโt think the bottle rocket was going to cut it?โ
Viktor, in the midst of chewing on a fry, couldnโt help but snort. โNo, I think it was a fantastic idea. Perhaps a bit too advanced for our skillset.โ
โI know youโre kidding, but honestly, a bottle rocket might be out of my league. That last quiz kicked my ass.โ Jayce joked, shaking his head amusedly.
โIf a bottle rocket is out of the question, I might have made a mistake in letting you be my partner.โ
Jayce laughed at that, and Viktor felt his discomfort ease just slightly. โOkay, okay, that hurt. I can handle the air filtration thing, promise.โ
โIf you say so,โ Viktor responded with a soft chuckle. Strangely, he found himself feeling glad that Jayce was so talkative. โYouโll have to prove yourself.โ
โWatch me.โ
guess who's back with the LONGEST CHAPTER YET?? trust me, i'm getting back in the groove of things. also the last bite? i think i'm so funny sometimes.
like i said in my last post, anyone who is a stranger things fan please let me know if you'd be interested in reading fics and oneshots from me! i haven't been in the fandom in a long time and the newest season is making me want to write again, but i know it's different than what i usually post here. so let me know!
beware everyone. the motivation to write has struck me once again. expect story updates within the next few days and/or hours.
also i'm writing to distract me from the new stranger things season. i fear that phase of my life is trying to drag me back. if one were to hypothetically write an actor au fanfic for stranger things, would anyone read it?? please let me know (and i love you guys) โค๏ธ
edit: omg i just realized that this might come across as an au about the actual actors and that is not what i meant haha. i meant that i have ideas for original characters who would play the st characters in this universe. i hope that makes sense lmao
i swear every time i post here itโs an apology for not being active. i am SO SORRY! iโm still writing both of my jayvik fics and taking requests (iโm working on one to post right now, actually :)) but iโve had a pretty crazy last few weeks with a family member in the hospital, so i havenโt been writing much.
iโm also starting a new original series that iโm pretty excited about, so if anybody is interested in reading a completely original series, please comment and let me know!!
i love you guys and please reach out to me for requests or comments or suggestions!! i love reading them! <33
idk if you're still taking requests for good omens or if it was just for valentine's day, but i've been obsessed with the idea of crowley and aziraphale dancing (like they did in season 2 yk? but like not at a party) i hope you know what i'm talking about lol!
i am absolutely still taking requests!! this is SO. CUTE. ugh. i love them too much.
The bookshop was empty. Granted, aside from Aziraphale and Crowley (and the occasional visit from a curious customer unaware that they wouldnโt be walking out with any new books), it typically was as such. Still, any onlookers from the street would assume that the bookshop was more or less desertedโ after all, the lights were off and the sign was flipped to โClosed.โ
In the apartment above, however, one angel and one demon were drunk. Or, perhaps, not quite drunk, not yet. Both were walking the line of tipsy, though it was quite early into the night. The sun had just dipped below the horizon, and the warm yellow light overhead reflected on the bottle of wine that sat on the table between them. Crowley was sprawled out rather comfortably along the loveseat across from Aziraphale, who was nestled cozily in his armchair. The angel was holding a book out in front of himself, a proud glint in his eyes.
โDo you know, my dear boy, this book was personally gifted to me byโโ
โIsocrates himself. Yes, angel, Iโm well aware. Youโve told me damn near a dozen times."
Aziraphale huffed irritably, pulling the book towards himself and pressing it against his chest lovingly. He looked utterly offended. โWell, it isnโt my fault that interesting conversation topics tend to dwindle after six thousand years of chitchat.โ
โWell, no,โ Crowley conceded between long sips of wine. He glanced out the window for a moment, admiring the stars that were beginning to emerge against the dark sky. โBut it is your fault that your only idea of interesting conversation revolves around books. Especially your books.โ
โNow, my dear boy, that is simply not true!โ Aziraphale argued, reaching out for the bottle between them and refilling his long-empty glass of wine. โI talk about plenty of things aside from my books.โ
Crowley arched a disbelieving eyebrow, and Aziraphale suddenly found himself feeling very intent on wiping that smug look off of his face. The angel glanced around the room, his gaze finally settling on the record player in the corner. He stood from his armchair and moved to flip through some of his records, and he eventually settled triumphantly on the newest addition to his collection.
โAh, here we are! Look, dear, at what Maggie gifted to me this weekend. A brand new Tchaikovsky record.โ
โOh, yeah? Gave it to you, did she? Youโve never been the type to accept things for free, angel.โ Crowley commented knowingly before finishing off the last of the wine in his glass. He stood with a grunt and made his way over, beginning to rummage through Aziraphaleโs prized collection of records.
โWell, you know, she was struggling with the rent again,โ Aziraphale explained, carefully resting the record on the player and settling the needle on top, โso I told her that I would take the record for free, and we would call it even! Again. Scandalous, I know.โ
Crowley didnโt bother to hide the snort that escaped him at Aziraphaleโs use of the word scandalous. He leaned to the side, his hip resting against the table. โRight.โ
Aziraphale hummed along to the record happily, his fingers tapping to the rhythm against his palm. He listened to the record in content silence for a long while, and his gaze occasionally flickered to Crowleyโs face. The demonโs sunglasses had long since been discarded, as usual, and for once, he actually looked rather content.
Crowleyโs arms were crossed over his chest, and no matter where Aziraphale went (he couldnโt seem to keep himself still; he moved to refill his wine glass, then proceeded to organize some of the books on his desk), he felt the demonโs gaze on him. It would be unnerving if it hadnโt become so familiar over the years and years theyโd known one another.
โThis is a gorgeous record,โ Aziraphale commented with a look over his shoulder, and he was clearly hoping to spark some more conversation with Crowley. โSuch a lovely waltz.โ
Crowley hummed in agreement (at least, Aziraphale hoped it was agreement), his snakelike eyes roaming across the angel. That was a look that Aziraphale still wasnโt quite used to, even if heโd been subjected to it more than a few times recently.
โI learned to waltz once, you know.โ
That seemed to catch Crowleyโs attention, and he raised his eyebrows. โDid you, now? In your littleโฆ club in the eighteenth century?โ
โIt was a gentlemanโs club,โ Aziraphale corrected firmly, pointing his glass in Crowleyโs direction, โand it was the nineteenth century. But yes.โ
Crowley held his hands up in surrender. โMy sincerest apologies.โ
Aziraphale couldnโt help but snicker, the alcohol in his system stopping him from keeping up his offended demeanor. โApology accepted.โ
The demon leaned back against the wall and raised his eyebrows expectantly. Aziraphale promptly frowned in confusion. โWhat? What is that look for?โ
โWell, you said you knew the dance. Are you not going to dance?โ
Aziraphaleโs eyes widened and he shook his head, sure his cheeks were flushed pink (and from more than just the alcohol intake). โNo! Heavens, no. Itโs been years. Besides, you know, itโs a partner dance, andโโ
โShame thereโs no partner around your apartment, then.โ Crowley said, the implication not subtle in the slightest. Still, Aziraphale was rather oblivious, and the wine wasnโt doing him any favors.
โAre you suggesting that we dance together?โ
โPerhaps.โ
Aziraphale hesitated. Crowley didnโt seem near drunk enough to be suggesting anything of the sort, but was he really going to pass up this opportunity? No, no he was not.
โIโll teach you.โ He said, not bothering to hide his excited little grin. He set his wine glass down and reached out for Crowleyโs hands, pulling one around his waist and holding the other with his own. Crowley pulled him a little closer, and Aziraphale cleared his throat nervously.
Oh, Lord, maybe this wasnโt the best idea.
โRight, so,โ he began, his voice a little strangled, โjustโฆ follow my lead, I suppose. Step backwards, yes, and thenโฆโ
Crowley learned the steps surprisingly quickly, and Aziraphale had half a mind to ask him if he had danced like this before. He didnโt want to ruin the mood, though, and so he held his tongue. Eventually, he stopped giving directions and just let himself enjoy the dance.
The record ended far too quickly, and he realized all too suddenly that Crowleyโs nose was mere centimeters from his. He cleared his throat and smiled, moving to pull away from Crowley. โRight, well, that wasโโ
The demon clearly had other plans, as he gave Aziraphaleโs hand a squeeze before dipping him down. The angel let out a rather undignified squeak and grasped Crowleyโs shirt, glaring daggers at him while he chuckled.
โYouโ you are a menace,โ he groaned. His cheeks felt hot, and he moved to brush off his waistcoat as if it had somehow become dirty. โThat wasnโt funny.โ
โItโs part of the dance, is it not?โ Crowley challenged, still laughing softly as he watched Aziraphale adjust his coat.
โYes, wellโฆ I wasnโt expecting it.โ
โI suppose that was the point.โ
Aziraphale brushed an unruly curl off of his forehead, reluctantly allowing Crowley to slide an arm around his waist again.
That was a lie, really; he wasnโt reluctant in the slightest. His head settled comfortably against Crowleyโs collarbone as the demon kissed the top of his head. Heโd never admit to the shiver that ran down his spine in response. This was certainly new territory, and he couldnโt deny that he was nothing but fond of it. โHorrible. Youโre horrible.โ
โRight. You sound like you mean that.โ
โI do.โ Aziraphale insisted. He lifted his head and pressed a soft kiss to Crowleyโs cheek. Crowley hummed contently, and so Aziraphale did it again. โI really do.โ
โI entirely believe you.โ The demon deadpanned, beginning to pull Aziraphale towards the loveseat.
โYou should,โ Aziraphale agreed, even as he sat down on the loveseat and snuggled up against Crowleyโs side. He wasnโt sure that he could recall ever being more comfortable. โItโs true.โ
Crowley ignored him, sliding an arm across his shoulders and pulling him closer. His free hand grabbed both of their wine glasses from the coffee table. โMore wine, angel?โ
โYes, please.โ
credits to @saradika-graphics for the dividers!!
and thank you so much for requesting this, i had so much fun writing it! i've been really wanting to write stuff for my other fandoms recently, so this was a great way to get into that.
i also made a friend of mine watch good omens with me recently, so you sent this at a perfect time because my hyperfixation is SO BACK. i can't decide if it's a good or a bad thing lmao.
hey everybody!! i am SO sorry for the lack in fic updates! life has been insane for the past couple of months and i have had the worst writer's block, but i am cooking some stuff up. i promise ๐ซถ
hey guys!! i hate to do this so soon after taking a pretty long time to update my stuff, but iโm probably going to be on a hiatus for the next few weeks. i donโt want to yap lol, but my mental health has been declining and i havenโt had much motivation to write. i also donโt want you guys to have to read stuff that i feel like i half-assed. so! if i get any boost of motivation from now and then iโll write and post as much as possible, but it probably wonโt be very frequent. sorry guys! love you all <3
Jayce and Viktor are reincarnated as modern-day college students after the events of season two. They don't retain their memories, but they begin having flashbacks of their past lives with one another.
Studying with Mel was one of Jayceโs favourite ways to spend his afternoons. Granted, that was mostly because it turned into a gossip session after an hour or so of productivity, but hey. He just enjoyed having some fun every now and thenโ so sue him.
Right now, he and Mel were sitting in Melโs dorm room, enthusiastically chatting about Caitlynโs new โfriend,โ Vi, whoโd been taking up more and more of her time recently. She had told them that she and Vi were studying together nearly every day, but Jayce wasnโt stupid, and neither was Mel.
โI mean, seriously, sheโs always so giggly when theyโre texting! She might as well admit that sheโs head over heels for this girl. Itโs like sheโs the only one who doesnโt realize how bad sheโs got it.โ
Jayce, half-focused on his laptop and half-focused on what Mel was saying, hummed and nodded in agreement. โUh-huh. Itโs bad.โ
Mel looked up from her page of notes, narrowing her eyes at him. Sheโd always been able to read him too well; it was almost scary. โSomethingโs up with you, too, isnโt it? Youโre acting all distracted.โ
โIโm always distracted,โ Jayce pointed out, lifting his head and casting a glance across the bed at her. She, as per usual, had made herself comfortable on the edge of his bed, her hair pulled back messily and her binder in her lap. โYou know that.โ
โOkay, yeah, but this is a different kind of distracted. Like somethingโs on your mind.โ
He huffed, just barely resisting the urge to roll his eyes. He hated that she was right. And usually, he wouldnโt hesitate to tell her what had been bothering himโ she was his best friend, after all. But something about his recent Viktor situation gave him pause. Sheโd listen to him, he knew, but he didnโt exactly want to look like a creep. He was having deju-vu fueled daydreams about a man that heโd barely known for two weeks; if that didnโt make him look like a creep, he didnโt know what would. But Mel was looking at him so expectantly, and she was stubborn as hell. She wouldnโt let him brush this off.
โThis physics project is just stressing me out.โ He said. It was only a half-lie; the project wasnโt exactly stressing him out, but working with Viktor certainly was.
Mel gave him a look, one that clearly communicated her thoughts on that: โYeah, right.โ
โYouโre such a pain in the ass,โ Jayce mumbled, leaning back against his pillows and closing his laptop. He guessed it would probably be good for him to get this off his chest, and he trusted Mel more than anyone. โItโs nothing serious. I justโฆ I dunno. You ever get the feeling that somethingโs already happened to you, even if it hasnโt?โ
โLikeโฆ dรฉjร vu?โ
Jayce nodded. โYeah. That. Iโve been hanging out with this guy lately, and I keep getting this weird feeling that Iโve known him for a long time, even though itโs only been a few weeks.โ
Mel hummed, closing her notebook and placing her full attention on him.ย โYouโve never met him before? Maybe you two, like, went to school together when you were younger, and youโve forgotten.โ
โNah,โ Jayce denied, shaking his head and biting his lower lip. He contemplated bringing up the daydreams, but decided against it. โHe grew up in Zaun. Down in the Lanes.โ
โYouโre talking about Viktor, arenโt you?โ
Jayce blinked a few times. Leave it to Mel to read him like a book. He honestly didnโt know how she did it. โ...uh, yeah. I am.โ
โYouโve been acting weird since you guys got paired up for this project. Before that, actually.โ She said, tilting her head to the side and raising her eyebrows knowingly. โSure youโre not leaving something else out?โ
Jayce could only cast a glare at her. โFine, fine. But it sounds weird.โ
โYou always sound weird.โ
โYouโre so sweet,โ he deadpanned, then sighed and stared up at the ceiling. โBut fine. Iโve had some, likeโฆ weird daydreams lately. They feel like memories, but I know they never happened to me.โ
โ...youโre right. That sounds weird as hell.โ Mel responded, propping her chin up in her hand.
Jayce sighed, lifting his hand and flipping her off. She responded in kind, and he spoke up before she could poke any more fun at him. โI know, I know. And it feels weird, too. I feel like a creep. But really, itโs likeโฆ like Iโm remembering something thatโs happened before.โ
Mel hummed, her gaze narrowing as it roved over his face. โI mean, youโd probably look like a creep if you told him that. Youโre going to meet up with him at the library this evening, right? Definitely donโt tell him youโve been daydreaming about him.โ
โWell, I wasnโt planning on it.โ He said with a scoff. She was trying to be a pain in his ass, he could tell, but at the very least, it was lightning the mood a little. It also made him feel a little bit less like he was going insane. โIโm sure heโd still want to work on this project with me if I said that.โ
โYeah, I wouldnโt ruin your chances with him. โCause I can tell youโve got a thing for him.โ
Jayce spluttered. โThatโsโ I do not! What are you talking about? Weโve barely known each other for a few weeks, Mel, cโmonโโ
โYeah, and you stare at him like he hung the moon. Youโre not subtle, Jayce.โ She said, a mischievous glint in her eyes that made Jayce uneasy.
โThatโs such a lie! Heโs justโฆ I mean, yeah, heโs pretty, but I donโt know him well enough to have a thing for him.โ He insisted furiously, his cheeks flushing bright red.
โWhatever you say,โ Mel smirked, peering at the screen of her phone before looking back up at him. โYouโd better get ready. I wouldnโt want to keep you from your date, after all.โ
โItโs not aโ Mel, stop,โ Jayce groaned, covering his face with his hand. โYouโre such an asshole.โ
โYeah, well, you love me. Now go. Youโre gonna be late.โ
As much as Jayce hated to admit it, she was right. It was already 3:45, and by the time he got ready and took the long walk down to the library, heโd be lucky if he was on time. And she was right; he did love her, no matter how difficult she seemed to make his life.ย
He got to thinking as he gathered up his things and shoved them into his bag. Did he have a thing for Viktor? Yeah, the man was cute. Pretty, like heโd told Mel earlier. He hadnโt lied. But, really, something about his daydreams made Viktor all the more intriguing. He felt like theyโd known each other for years rather than weeks, and the version of Viktor that heโd come to know in his daydreamsโฆ maybe he had a thing for him. Maybe.
Shaking himself out of his thoughts, he waved to Mel and rushed out of the dorm buildings, heading down the pathway to the library. He didnโt need to be thinking about any of thatโ it was probably only on his mind because Mel mentioned it.
Yeah. That was it.
He rounded the corner and opened the glass doors into the library building, sighing heavily when he saw the clock: 4:02. At least he wasnโt horribly late.
Jayce took a moment to catch his breath, trying to clear his mind as he looked around the tables for Viktor. He spotted a familiar head of messy brown hair tucked back into a corner, face in a book. Dropping his bag to the floor, Jayce took a seat across from Viktor, his heart stuttering at the sight of Viktorโs hazel eyes. The sun hit them in just the right way to make them look golden, andโ
Good god, Jayce, get it together.
โHey.โ
Viktor nodded at him and gave a soft โhelloโ in response, pushing his book to the side in favor of opening his laptop. Jayce did the same, his gaze flicking from the screen to Viktor and back again.
โGot any ideas for this project?โ
โA few, though none that stick out to me,โ Viktor said, propping his chin in the palm of his hand. He tapped a long, slender finger against his cheek, casting a glance around the near-empty library. โYou?โ
โUhโฆ honestly, not really. I havenโt thought about it too much.โ Jayce admitted sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. โTell me about your ideas.โ
Viktorโs eyes lit up as he opened his mouth, and Jayce realized that he had essentially just opened the floodgates. For someone who wasnโt often very chatty, Viktor could talk someoneโs ear off about something he was passionate aboutโ and, unsurprisingly, that something was science.
It seemed like theyโd be here for a long while.
okay so... guess who's not dead??
writer's block has had me in a chokehold for the last, like, two months, but i'm back! expect much quicker updates from here on out :)
since i've been gone for a hot minute, i wanted to thank everyone for all the love on the last few chapters! i didn't expect this to get any attention at all so it's great to see you guys reading this haha. please feel free to leave comments/questions/input-- i love reading everybody's thoughts!
Being a muggle-born meant that, on his eleventh birthday, the last thing Jayce Talis expected was to receive an acceptance letter to Hogwarts. His mother, ever since he was young, had gently warned him not to get his hopes up. Of course, telling that to a six-year-old โ especially a six-year-old as optimistic as Jayce โ had the opposite effect.
Heโd been obsessed with the extraordinary from a young age. He had witnessed an act of magic save his motherโs life, for goodnessโ sake; how could he not be?
Dreaming of the day he might get his Hogwarts letter was drastically different than the day it actually came. The mail had come, like every other day, and Jayce, eager as ever, ran to beat his mother to it. He disregarded every envelope in the mailbox โ bills, mostly, and a birthday card from his grandmother โ until his eye caught the out of place red wax seal on a worn-out looking envelope, and upon seeing the Hogwarts crest stamped on the front, he bounded to his mother and threw his arms around her with a cheer.
Sheโd hardly believed it at first, and neither did he, but there was no denying that it was genuine. The day heโd left for school was full of tears and hugs from his overly-affectionate mother, who had made him promise to write to her every week.
Jayce didnโt mind keeping that promise. In fact, even now, a few months into his sixth year at Hogwarts, he sent letters to his mother weekly. He knew it soothed his motherโs unease about him being so far from home, even after all these years, and he enjoyed keeping up with her. It was a win-win situation.
Viktor, on the other hand, had grown up without much โ if any at all โ parental guidance. His father, stuck as Viktorโs sole caregiver after the boyโs mother had passed away due to complications during his birth, was distant at best during the years he took care of Viktor. He would turn a blind eye to his sonโs advanced creations, ones that Viktor would spend hours upon hours developing, and it hurt the young boy deeply to think that his father couldnโt care less about him.
At age nine, he was sent to live with his aunt without any explanation from his father. Andrea was wonderful, and Viktor would forever be grateful for the effort she had put into ensuring that he had the best childhood possible, but there was no denying that she did not replace his parents. She never even told him what became of his father.
When he turned eleven, he had been sent his Hogwarts acceptance letter. It hadnโt exactly been a big surprise for him, nor for Andrea โ their family had a long history of rather powerful magic. There had never really been a question of if he would get a letter.
Through the years of being at Hogwarts, Viktorโs communication with his aunt had lessened greatly. He stayed with her during the summers, of course, but he only wrote to her once a month or so when school was in session. He chose to stay at the school during their winter break, too; it was a chance to get some extra studying done. Besides, he hated the long train journeys.
Viktor enjoyed his time at Hogwarts, unremarkable though it had been. He benefited from time with his professors; most of the time, they were the only people he interacted with. He would always be appreciative of their ability to put up with his seemingly endless stream of questions, especially during his first year at the school. What could he say? Heโd been a very curious child, and the lack of social interaction certainly didnโt help.
Jayceโs years at Hogwarts had beenโฆ well, certainly more eventful than Viktorโs, but nothing extraordinary. Between his time spent studying, his spot on Ravenclawโs quidditch team, and his frequent interactions with his social circle, he didnโt have time for much else โ and he was fine with that.ย
The two had Defence Against the Dark Arts together, not that they knew it. Jayce spent his time with Mel during that class, and Viktor chose to sit by himself. If it hadn't been for Professor Reveck (or Singed, as Viktor had heard others referring to him as), they never would have interacted. But a partner project had been assigned, and though Viktor would much rather do his work on his own, he was glad to at least be paired up with someone smart โ not to mention, someone who seemed nice and bearable, for the most part.
Each duo had been assigned a research topic that had to do with the dark arts. Viktor, well-versed in the topics of the dark arts thanks to many a conversation with his aunt, was surprised to see the words โThe Hexcoreโ printed in neat cursive ink at the top of their scroll. Not only had he never heard of anything of the sort, but it seemed to stand out from the other studentsโ topics, which all fell into categories of hexes or curses.
Viktor looked up, only to see an incredibly confused-looking Jayce staring back at him. Well, at least that confirmed his suspicions โ something was incredibly off about their project.
โHave youโฆ ever heard of this?โ Jayce muttered, leaning across the desk between them so that Viktor could hear him.ย
Viktor, who had been repeatedly mouthing the word โHexcoreโ under his breath as if to see if he could recall some distant memory, managed only a shake of his head in response. He felt eyes boring into the back of his head, and when he cast a glance backwards, he was met with the harsh gaze of Professor Reveck.
Quickly looking back towards Jayce, he let out a frustrated little huff. โIโve got no clue what this is. Surely thereโs been a mistake.โ
Jayce bit his lip, turning the scroll towards him as if reading it again would make it make any more sense. โMaybe.โ
They agreed to meet with Professor Reveck after class was dismissed, but they neednโt have worried โ while other students were rushing out the doors, the professor placed his hands on the desk in front of the two boys, effectively keeping them in place.
โViktor,โ he greeted, his voice rough, โand Jayce. I have aโฆ favour to ask of you two.โ
Viktor could only bring himself to blink at the man hovering over them, nodding stiffly. Jayce opened his mouth to speak, but was promptly cut off by the professor.
โIโm pleased to see youโre both on board. You see, your project topic may be unconventional โ Iโm sure youโve noticed this already, yes?โ He began, tracing his forefinger over the words written in cursive. โWell, this Hexcore, it is something that I am trusting the two of you with, and only the two of you.โ
This time, Jayce did manage to speak up before being silenced by Singed. โWhy us? If this is so secretive, surely โโ
โYou are two of my brightest students. I know that I can trust both of you with this.โ
Unable to force himself to speak, Viktor nodded once again. He found himself feeling both intrigued and oddly flattered โ the knowledge that they were being trusted with something so formidable had certainly caught his attention. โWhat is its purpose?โ He dared to ask, glancing up at Singed once again.
โUnknown. However, I do have reason to believe that it could harbor the power to enhance and perhaps modify biology. This could prove to be of great importance in the medical world.โ He explained, straightening up and turning towards the door behind his desk. โStay right there for just one moment.โ
As he walked away, Viktor turned to face Jayce, his eyebrows raised and his lips parted. Jayce beat him to speaking, a hesitant edge to his voice. โThisโฆ this canโt be a good idea.โ
Viktor had to admit he was just as hesitant, but there was an underlying current of curiosity eating at his mind that he couldnโt ignore. โIf it has the capability to help peopleโฆโ
He trailed off into silence, as did Jayce. The tension between them was palpable, settling around them like an uncomfortably heavy blanket, and it was made worse when Professor Reveck returned. He held his hands out to the students, offering up the two glowing blue orbs that sat in his palms.
Neither boy reached out to take one, and he nudged his hands closer. โHex Crystals. If anything will aid you in your research, it will be these.โ
Jayce evidently wasnโt going to take one, if the concerned gaze he sent Viktor was any indication. Though he hesitated, Viktor reached out to take one of the crystals. It was smooth, sliding into his palm as easily as if it had somehow belonged there. The surface of it was cold to the touch, almost eerily so, but Viktor pushed that thought to the back of his mind.
Jayce, upon seeing that Viktor had taken the crystal without any sort of repercussions, reached out with a shaky hand to take the other between his thumb and index finger. Holding it felt wrong, but it only influenced the curiosity brewing in his mind.
Pulling his hands back and folding them in front of them, Singed watched the two in silence. When he spoke up once again, his voice was cold, betraying none of the earlier pride heโd shown to his students. โGo, or youโll both be late to your next class. Do not speak about this to anyone. Oh, and watch the crystals; theyโre very volatile.โ
With that last word of warning, he was gone, having walked back into his office and leaving the two to their devices. Viktor cradled the crystal in his palm for another moment before silently tucking it into a pocket of his messenger bag. He reached out for his crutch and braced himself to stand.
โAre you sure about this?โ Jayce said, following suit. He still held the crystal in his hand, staring at it with what could only be described as disdain. โI mean, if itโs supposed to help peopleโฆโ
It was as if he was trying to convince himself that what they were doing wasnโt wrong. It gave Viktor an uneasy sinking feeling in his stomach, one that he tried to ignore.
Viktor began to walk towards the door, and after Jayce tucked his Hex Crystal into his bag, he trailed right behind. โItโs our assignment,โ he insisted, casting a glance over his shoulder at Jayce. โMeet me in the library after dinner. We can find more information on it then.โ
Jayce nodded, though Viktor could still see the way his hand trembled as he reached out to open the door. Viktor stepped through with a quiet โthank you,โ offering Jayce what he hoped to be a reassuring smile.
They could do this. Viktor knew they could. It wasnโt as though it was anything too absurd โ just a research project. Nothing more, and nothing less.
As he parted ways with Jayce and began to walk through the grounds to his next class, Viktor couldnโt help but feel as though the weight of the Hex Crystal was straining on his bag. Little though it may be, its impact would prove to weigh heavily on both his mind and body.
you guys my dumbass just realized i never posted this on tumblr ๐ญ
went to post chapter two and there was just. no chapter one. please forgive me ๐
Jayce and Viktor are reincarnated as modern-day college students after the events of season two. They don't retain their memories, but they begin having flashbacks of their past lives with one another.
If you were to ask Viktor what his least favourite part of being in school was, he would answer โgroup workโ without hesitation. Sure, maybe it taught him important social skills and how to function with other people in the workplace, but he didnโt care. Heโd heard that argument since he was a child. All of his experience with group projects involved doing every bit of the work while others took credit.
It didnโt help that he didnโt have many people to choose to work with, either. There was Sky, but she didnโt have any classes with him โ damn her for being a morning person. Viktor didnโt understand how she could handle physics at 7 am without tearing her hair out, but more power to her, he supposed. He didnโt think he would survive that kind of torture routinely.ย
Well, just his luck, his physics professor decided that she wanted to assign a project for the last few weeks of the semester. After a huge test, no less. God, Viktor could use a break. At least it was only a partner project. He wasnโt sure he could deal with having to do the work of three people aside from himself.
While the others in the classroom milled about, finding seats with their friends to begin their work, Viktor stayed firmly put in his own chair. Heโd just wait until someone approached him as a last-ditch effort, he guessed. He could really use Sky right about now.
His gaze landed on the front of the room, where Jayce was standing next to Mel. Viktor assumed theyโd be partnering up. But, much to his surprise, Mel stepped past Jayce and sat down next to the blue-haired girl in the front โ Viktor was pretty sure her name was Caitlyn, though he wasnโt positive. While looking around dejectedly, Jayceโs gaze fell on Viktor, and he gave him a questioning little glance and a tilt of his head.
Viktor blinked a few times, hoping he didnโt look as surprised as he felt, before he nodded. Well, this was certainly better than pairing up with someone heโd never met before. On top of that, Viktor was pretty sure Jayce would actually do his work. That was certainly a plus.
Jayce dropped his backpack on the floor and flopped down in the seat next to Viktor, stretching his arms out in front of him with a heavy sigh. Viktor chuckled quietly, more than a little amused at the manโs melodramatic actions. Normally, something of the sort would annoy him to no end, butโฆ Jayce seemed to be able to get away with a lot more than most. Viktor didnโt want to think about why that was.
โI guessed you and Mel would partner up.โ
Jayceโs nose scrunched up as he looked in the direction of Mel and Caitlyn, who were chatting and laughing at the front of the classroom. His look could easily have been mistaken for disdain if it werenโt for the clear hint of fondness in his gaze. โI thought we would, too. But I guess Iโm a third wheel to my own friends now.โ
Viktor had a hard time believing that a man as effortlessly charming as Jayce would be a third wheel in any situation, but he didnโt say as such. โIt could be worse, I suppose. You could be left all alone.โ
Jayce let out a huff of a laugh, shrugging his shoulders. โYeah, definitely. Iโd much rather work with you than someone I donโt know.โ
It was a passing comment, one that probably meant nothing in the long run, but it caught Viktorโs attention. Jayce actually wanted to work with him โ or, at least, would prefer to work with him over other people. That thought should not have gotten his heart racing the way it did. He was supposed to be more composed than this.
Pulling his laptop out of his bag, Viktor tried to turn his brainโs focus onto their project. That would be much more beneficial than scrutinizing Jayceโs every word or action. โSo, I take it the test went well for you?โ
Jayce blinked at him, almost like he didnโt know what he was talking about, and then a flicker of realization crossed his face at the memory of their conversation in the library. โOh, yeah, it went fine. The book you recommended actually helped quite a bit.โ
โI should hope so. That is my job.โ Viktor said with a quiet laugh, opening up his laptop. โHave you given any thought to what we should do for our presentation?โ
โUh, honestlyโฆ not yet.โ
Well, that was helpful. Viktor took the hair tie off of his wrist and pulled his hair back, ignoring how he could swear he could feel Jayceโs gaze on him. Maybe he was just imagining things.
He really hoped he wasnโt.
โI havenโt either. Maybe we should meet up at the library to work on it tonight, if we donโt get much done in class?โ Viktor suggested, lowering his arms and giving his head a little shake to make sure his hair was secured. It was, and so he opened up his laptop to take note of any ideas they had.
Jayce looked a bit surprised by the suggestion, but it didnโt take long before he was nodding eagerly. โYeah, sure. That sounds good to me.โ
Viktor couldnโt fight a little smile, responding with a nod as he turned to his laptop. He made a few notes, but nothing groundbreaking โ he couldnโt focus with Jayce sitting next to him.
Working with him was something Viktor felt as though heโd done a million times before. They exchanged words with ease, bouncing ideas off of one another like theyโd been partners for years instead of minutes.
Before long, though, they were doing more chatting than talking. Viktor, who usually hated small talk, much preferred to listen to Jayce talk animatedly about his chemistry teacher or the next big exam he was studying for. It was almost impossible to keep up with how quickly he changed topics โ it was like trying to hit a moving target.
Viktor couldnโt help but wonder how it was possible for someone to so effectively multitask โ how Jayce managed to get his work done with such ease while also chatting Viktorโs ear off was mind-blowing. Viktor sat hunched over his laptop, trying desperately to focus on the words he was typing while also comprehending Jayceโs words. It was a losing battle, unfortunately. His fingers slowed on the keyboard, and he let out quiet โuh-huhโs and โyepโs while listening to Jayce ramble on.
By the time class was ending, Viktor was pretty sure he knew all there was to know about Jayce. Well, on a base level, at least.
He hated how boring his chemistry class was, even though he and Caitlyn sat together. He and Caitlyn had grown up together. He was pretty sure Caitlyn was seeing someone, but she wouldnโt tell him who it was. He, surprisingly, liked listening to Mel and Caitlynโs occasional gossip. He โ right, that probably got the point across.
Jayce still didnโt know much about him, though, which Viktor didnโt really mind. He grew up in Zaun. Heโd been lonely as a kid. His parents werenโt around much, except for Viktorโs doctorโs visits. That wasโฆ well, really, that was all there was to know about him. Heโd never been very interesting.
That was fine, though. He would settle for listening to Jayce talk any day. He was nice to listen to, and as they walked out of the lecture hall together, Viktor realized that he hadnโt felt so comfortable in another personโs presence in a long time.
The epiphany was frightening. He was used to tense conversations, to eyeing the closest exit whenever he spoke to someone else. And yetโฆ here was Jayce, making him feel like he was at home after only a few days of knowing one another.
It took Viktor a moment to notice that Jayce had stopped talking. Looking up, he noticed the slight raise of Jayceโs eyebrows, and he felt a little sheepish smile form on his lips. He must have been asked a question.
โI, uhโฆ sorry, say that again?โ
โI said Iโve got to head to my next class,โ Jayce repeated, and Viktor was relieved to hear no sign of annoyance in his tone. If anything, he only sounded a little amused. โIโll see you at the library, yeah? How does four sound?โ
โYeah. Yeah, four sounds good.โ Viktor agreed, watching as Jayce waved and walked down the hallway.
He held onto his crutch a little more tightly for a moment, taking a slow breath in and out. He needed to get back to his dorm. Some peace and quiet to think would do his mind good right now, especially if he was going to be spending the afternoon with Jayce.
Suddenly, four oโclock sounded much too far away.
sigh. they're so gay. thanks for coming to my tedtalk.
