The Ruby Assessment

So basically in this program, you must pass a Ruby Assessment to go onto the next phase. I took the assessment last week, it was three hours, I took the full three hours. For me I think it only took that long because I got stuck on one somewhat simple problem that I just didn’t understand at the time when I read it, I realized how long I was stuck on this and just went ahead and came back to it later, I thought I did pretty well on it, it was much simpler than the Week 6 game challenge in my opinion and more resembled the Week 6 Assessment. I just got the results back yesterday and I am moving onto the next Phase which will be onsite! :D

Javascript (Week 7)

Back to the for loops and semicolons! Pretty sure most people do not like semicolons, It’s just super familiar to me. Javascript was def easier syntax it’s a bit more similar to C++ than Ruby. Switching to Javascript wasn’t that bad this week we just went over syntax and did some data structure problems in it. It was the easiest week for me so far!

Ruby (Week 6)

In Week 6 we finally got into classes, attributes, instance methods and modules. This was somewhat similar to classes in C++, but with different syntax and names, the basic principles and concepts were still there. The only completely new thing I learned was Rspec testing, we didn't have anything similar to that in C++. It wasn’t that much of a learning curve. It was def harder writing programs though we had a challenge to build a game and it took many hours for me to do it (it was probably the hardest program I had to build so far). It was hard using classes with the instance methods to build it, I ended up writing a lot of stuff outside the class :/ I didn’t have much time to refactor that since I ended up doing on the assignment at the last possible moment (need to manage time better). Weirdly though the Week 6 Assessment was much easier than the challenge and I did pretty well on it.

Ruby (Weeks 4 - 5)

In Week 4 we did some basic Ruby problems and challenges including reintroduction to data types, control flow and debugging. Week 5 was where it went up a notch and we finally started working with arrays, hashes, iteration, nested data structures and dipped a little into implementing sorting algorithms. What I really struggled with in Week 5 was trying to pick which loop to use for implementing a solution. I naturally almost always go for while loops as I mentioned in my last post, but at times where you don’t always know how many times you want to loop something it’s not always the best loop so I had to go for other loops or iteration methods. One of our solo challenges required a lot of code because we still haven’t done classes in Ruby, which made it a little hard, but it wasn’t too bad. Only thing I wish they provided was a lot of different example codes, because I don’t know how Ruby programs are supposed to look like, I’m gonna have to google! Also I use Sublime to code in Ruby, unlike an ide that tells you you’re doing something wrong this is kinda just like typing in notepad which is a little more nerve-wrecking to me. We are moving onto classes this week so hopefully it’ll be better. Yay organized code!

Looping in Ruby

What other ways are there to loop in Ruby other than while and until ?

When I saw this question I did automatically think “FOR LOOPS!!” because I remember seeing it somewhere while picking up some basic Ruby earlier this summer but I remember a TA telling me at a workshop that its not really used much in Ruby, I think she said Rubyists usually prefer the while and until loops. Exploring this a little more today the for loop in Ruby is a lot different than in C++ mainly because it kinda acts like a foreach loop, and mainly is used for arrays, hashes and for a range of numbers. I tried to look up some other loops in Ruby but only came across the each method which you can use for ranges and the times, upto, and downto methods. I think I personally prefer the while loop, its comfortable. The until not so much.

HTML and CSS (Weeks 2 - 3)

Hey Everyone, I just completed weeks 2 and 3 in Phase 0. Week 2 was on HTML5, prior to this I already have learned HTML but it was mainly centered around HTML4, so it was a great refresher on some basics of HTML but I’m glad DBC has a updated curriculum, I never used <aside> or the <section> tags much before this, and definitely never had a git workflow alongside coding in HTML. Oh also I never used sublime much for typing in code its super helpful that it auto-completes things. For week 3 we dived into CSS! I think that was my favorite week so far, I love designing and making things look pretty! I also really like pair programming with different people in all the different locations, also love how passionate everyone is and I feel as though everyone is on the same level too, in school I’ve had teams and partners where sometimes it’s imbalanced either I knew a lot more than my partner or the opposite but I like how everyone is on the same page here. In week 2, we created a webpage in plain html and in week 3 we dressed it up with CSS. I decided to do mine on one of my favorite TV Shows Mr Robot :) The only thing I get a bit stressed about are the assessments because I’m always worried something might happen to my computer or in real life that would prevent me from completing the timed challenges but things have been good so far! Today is my first day in Week 4 we finally started super basic Ruby and Im super excited! :D

Git and Github (Week 1)

So I just completed Week 1 of DBC, I learned a lot about the command line, git and github. The command line is something I have always disliked because I love visuals and I have always preferred a GUI, but having used the terminal many times over the past week I’m feeling much more comfortable with it. The commands are pretty short so it’s easy to remember. Version Control in itself is actually really cool, I knew about it before, but was way to lazy to learn so I’m really glad that DBC is using it for almost every project now. I had a little trouble understanding git branching, pulling and pushing and forking it’s a bit of a learning curve but DBC did a good job with their videos explaining it and I got it after a few tries, I really like it now and we are actually using it in this week’s focus which is HTML.

Hello World

Hello World! Thought I’d create a blog for my journey at Dev Bootcamp. I just got accepted last week, and started the first day this Monday. I’m super excited to learn full stack web development, I’ve been wanting to do this since like ten years ago... seriously, I’ve always had a multitude of different websites I’d maintain including creating content, changing themes, buying domains, uploading via ftp and all that jazz, I did everything basically but code, did a lot of graphic design thought I’d major in graphic design in college but ended up doing Comp Sci, although I now know how to code, it’s still not for the web! I mean I know HTML and CSS and a bit of javascript but I want to learn everything mainly the backend and how it connect to the front-end, I want to create beautiful, functional, meaningful websites! That’s why I decided to join Dev Bootcamp! :D
