Communication Design Studio 1 | Core Studies | Week 12 | Workshop

I am finally done with my cultural cupboard!! And I named it “Memories of Kopitiam”. The following paragraphs are my description on this artefact.

Coming from a Malaysian Chinese family background, I am proud to have such a unique culture called, Kopitiam, which means traditional coffee shop in my home country. I will never forget how it feels to be in the koptiam that I used to grow up with. The vintage feeling, peacefulness and leisureliness, and a little bit of dirty and messy is what I want to replicate in this artefact. 

I used some of the old times traditional items to bring out the noshtalgic feelings. I used the traditional wood cupboard as the outlook of the artefact. Inside the cupboard, there are some cigarettes and old-school style receipt. And the box full of tobacco stains acts as an ashtray. All these items could be found in the olden days kopitiam. Last but not least, the yellowish diaries show the thoughts of a boy about kopitiam and his food culture in his different phase of life.

That must be a full of memories cupboard, the most interesting is when I opened it , the smell of cigarette came out to me, I think that you completely reappear the atmosphere in Kopitiam

Reflective text

This semester talked about FOOD for core project . I learnt the food design, food experience and how the food related to the society etc. in lecture. The lectures always can learn a lot of knowledges, and it really informative. The first workshop was the deepest memory in my mind which called ‘Exquisite corpse’. We needed to switch our artwork to each other, and I thought this is a good chance to know. The final core project was interesting as well. It was a way to talk about our hometown food, and we can know other students hometown food,too. They all looked delicious and I thought these food will bring the specific memory for them. In this project, we had chances to show every group members, and they can give me some suggestions to make my food calendar better. I changed the layout details in 3 times. The details would influence the whole design. My favorite activity was Art event. That was really interesting, we can look other students artwork and ideas. They were really well done and creative. Every students used their own way to show the food development.

Our essentials class was very helpful in future, but I always struggled in Project management. Because the order of class was wrong. Essentials class will help us to know how to work with the real company and real clients.

 I really enjoy it, and I hope I can be better in next year.

Essentials Reflection

In Semester 2 of Year 1, Studio 1 essentials is a really struggle class for me. I am not a lucky one because the order of E1, E2 and E3 is wrong. When I learned E3 management, I did not understand this session and always confused such as I cannot understand why did not Adrian ask us to change the logo. After E1 session, I knew the refreshed logo and brand identity were David’s project. Therefore, at the beginning of this course, there were lots of questions in my mind. I think management is the most dif cult one for me because it should write a lot and I don't know how to write such as deliverable and scope. When I  nished this part, the proposal and production are easier because I understood what should I do in this project and the aim of this project.

I think the essential class is not design something, it is more like a business class. But I know this class is very important for us because we will do some relative works in the future or in the company. We need to use this method to explain our concepts or strategies to clients, and try to win the clients’ trust. I know this session in year one just the beginning, maybe we will learn more in next year. This is the basic skills for

every designer, and it good for our future when we in the real company.

Reflection.

I am so happy I done the ‘Cultural food’ Core project assessment!!!!  I choose food calendar with the metal clip as my final plan about this project. In the beginning, I think the food calendar can show the different food better because each month will have different food to represent. Maybe in this month, I also have the specific day to record this food because it has the special meaning for me. I think the most difficult part was taking photos for these food. Of course, I took some photos in China, but some photos took in Melbourne. I needed to think about the position of this dish, and it also tested skills of photography. However, this project can practice the skills of illustration as well. In the semester 1, I cannot use AI skillful, but this semester is much better than before. Actually, if I finished ‘January ‘, then the rest of months were easier because the processes were similar. When I finished the designing of food calendar , I should print them out. Printing was very important step because maybe the real one would have some details cannot match with computer such as the color. So I would be careful. Our Group theme is ‘Cultural food’, and I think this is not the difficult theme for me because I like eating my hometown food. This project needs the abilities of layout and photography, I think I should enhance these skills during the holiday.

ART EVENT

On Monday, we have the art event which display our final and communicate with each other. These artworks come from our group students (Cultral Food). I look around and find other group good artwork as well, but I forget to take the photos. Many artworks look amazing and pretty. Different topic can let us use different way to understand this project.

Food Culture Project

Drinking tea is a part of our life in my family, it is showing the moment when tea leaves are put in boiling water, from dry to wet, from fold to unfold, from compressed to blooming, from clear to colored… Now, this moment is frozen in these tea bags. The teaspoon is used as a handle here, the box is covered by a bamboo curtain splint, both of them are the representative of traditional tea culture in China.

I chose Chinese tea for my project topic, as tea has a long history in China, and my family is engaged in selling Chinese tea for many years so I get to know tea since I was young. We drink tea during many parts of the day such as at meals for good health or simply for pleasure. In other words, Chinese tea is meaningful for me and my family, Tea is very popular in China, particularly in the south of China.

Finished Cards

I photographed the completed cards, the gold stock looked really good in the natural light as it reflected the sun. It was hard to get all the cards in one photo but I thought it as a little unnecessary anyway as the writing wouldn’t be legible at this scale. I decided to photograph the cards on a white background and with some jewelry and decor, I have from India. I thought this made it appear a bit more personal and tied it to the context a bit more. It also reinforces the significance of gold. Overall, I’m very pleased with my final cards, I think printing onto the gold stock was a good choice and I like the repetition of the cards which looks very effective when laid out sequentially or in rows.

Week 12 | Workshop  Final One

This is my final.I put some photos inside of the box,others put them beside the box to show the details.And my project name is photo memory.I also print the title by polaroid camera.

These my final Production. I take photos from different directions to show the varity side of my calendar. The name is ‘Home-made favourite’.

All the food in the photos in the calendar is from my Mum. These foods from different places in China, of course, there also have my hometown traditional food. Every places has their distinctive food. Because I like eating very much, my mum always makes various dishes for me. When I was studying in Melbourne, I really miss my mum home-made.

I use AI to do 12 months food calendar. I have not print all of them, and just show them on the computer.

This is the final change of my calendar layout. For the front side, I put the date in the middle and use the circle to circle one date. I use the different transparentcy to show the context because it can make the context not very dominant. Different transparentcy also can show the different levels of black, and we can see the color varity.
